Cool challenge. This should be a fun one. And we got 12 entries this week! That's good. Looks like the contest is still going strong, and attracting people's interest.

You still owe us reviews of children.
And yeah considering how fast the second one died out I was worried, but this seems to be going strong.
I'm thinking of opening up the race restriction due to the minotaur problem and grouping them is certain ways. Not sure how I'll break it all down, but that's what I'm planning for race suggestions.

A few characters really stick out in my mind this week.
-Vellah Mors. I like the idea of a werewolf planeswalker, and the roguish backstory is really cool. I feel this would probably be my second place. -Aurica Angelheart. The story of how she merged with an angel is interesting. The main thing I don't like so much is that the card doesn't really feel black. -Amehtah. A succubus fits the femme fatale requirement really well, and it's awesome to see a female demon. I especially like the method through which she acquired a spark. However, again, the card doesn't work for me. There's too much going on. -Aria, the Blood Witch. Call it my bias for my favorite tribe, or the fact that she's from Innistrad, which is my favorite plane (pre-Avacyn Restored at least), but this character gets my vote this week. I like the little touches (like the fact that she hates being frozen before womanhood, and thus doesn't take care of her appearance), and frankly the concept of having ones whole life be an illusion is terrifying. I think I'd turn evil, too, in that case.
As for this week's challenge, I'm thinking I want to try a Phoenix planeswalker. Are phoenixes sentient, and/or capable of having sparks? Or do we not know enough about them to be sure?

ya, was going to go back and change Amehtah's card (did edit, if only for my own purposes). You can still use the "old" janky version for the challenge is you wish, i dun care.
Anyway, this was fun, and I love the entries everyone posted! quite flavorful.
Also for this weeks contest: is a phoenix a mana creature, or were they "born" before? I wonder if maybe during its rekindling if it is another life or just a regeneration of sorts. If it is a new life, could it randomly activate a spark if it obtained it before? That could be interesting

Okay, I think I cracked the phoenix problem. Colera, the Risen Flame:Phoenix Planeswalker Appearance: Spoiler:
Show
Colera takes the form of a golden eagle, wreathed in red-orange flame. With every beat of his wings, he fans his own flames, causing the air to shimmer around him as heat waves wash off his body. Occasionally, a loose feather falls from his wings or tail, burning slowly as it drifts to the ground.
The most unique feature of Colera is his eyes. Ever since he awoke in the Blind Eternities, his eyes have contained a swirl of chaos, with coloration ranging from the pitchest black to the most vivid red to the deepest blue. Whenever he channels mana they ignite, burning with the same flame that surrounds his body. History: Spoiler:
Show
In Colera's previous life, he lived on a small plane known as Inifime. He remembers very little of this former existence: only that one day a visiting stranger from another plane discovered Colera's roost, forming a mana bond with the majestic creature for her future use. Colera knows not how many times he was summoned by this human female, for the process of being conjured through the Blind Eternities is chaotic and plays havoc on memory. All Colera knows is that one day, in his old age, he was conjured to battle on a distant plane.
That is when disaster struck. As any scholar who has studied phoenix lore knows, they perish in a brilliant inferno and shortly arise from the ashes as a new creature. Colera was so close to the end of his lifespan that, in transit through the Blind Eternities, he combusted, dying in a swirling chaos of fire and flame never to be witnessed by mortalkind.
Dying in the Blind Eternities was a unique experience, and had a lasting impact on Colera: whether he had a spark previously, or gained one due to the circumstances, Colera was born anew as a Planeswalker, able to fly the distance between planes as a normal phoenix would soar through the sky.
More interesting, as if a piece of the Blind Eternities were embedded into him, his mind has greatly expanded in his new life. Before, he had the instincts of a predatory animal, albeit an intelligent one; now, he has an understanding of the multiverse and of his place in it. Before, he was aware of himself as an individual, but now he understands the bonds that form and break between him and others; in short, he has gained a rough understanding of tricky concepts such as friendship.
Colera was reborn with a single purpose in his mind: he had to find the mage who had summoned him. Even though the battle for which he was needed was long since over (without Colera's aid, the planeswalker lost), Colera still feels compelled to answer the call. He flies from plane to plane, searching for that familiar aether trail that his former master leaves behind.
Colera knows not what he will do when he finds her. The remnants of his former life are compelled to serve her, yet his new life grants him the independence to fight the compulsion. Whether he serves her, destroys her in a fit of rebellion, or forms an alliance as equals, only time will tell. Personality: Spoiler:
Show
Colera's mind is conflicted. On the one hand, he retains the mind of a predator: he has the instincts of a wild animal, and a tendency to live in the moment rather than thinking ahead. On the other hand, he now has the capacity to ask questions and seek answers. His life is one of balance between instinct and intellect, between impulse and speculation. He flies with one wing in the past and the other in the future.
Another aspect of his fragmented mind is the compulsion to obey his former master planeswalker. Though it was his old life, and not his current, that was bound to her service, the fact that he never answered the final call before perishing has left the chains of obedience dangling from his psyche. He has enough presence of mind to deny the compulsion for a while, but it always returns, and he can never remain on one plane for long, forced to wander in search of his master. Powers: Spoiler:
Show
As a phoenix, Colera has mastery of fire magic. As his body consists, at least in part, of flame he is able to channel red mana with relative ease.
The true nature of his power, however, is that of recursion. Colera's spells are never spent. Just as his essence exists after death and is reborn of fire, so too can he rekindle any spells he's recently cast.
His former life, having acted as a mage's familiar, has gifted him the ability to share his power with another. His Card: Spoiler:
Show
Colera, the Risen Flame - Planeswalker - Colera +1: Put a 1/1 red Elemental Bird creature token with haste and flying onto the battlefield. -2: Return target instant or sorcery card from your graveyard to your hand. 0: Colera, the Risen Flame deals damage equal to its loyalty to target creature or player. {3} EDIT: Made him a little more sentient in his former life.

I posted something similar in another thread but i'm fascinated in a "swarmlord" type walker, possibly G/B. For this weeks challenge, I'm thinking of making it a spider. The most significant "spider" in my mind is either Arachne from Greek myth or Shelob from Lord of the Rings, so the story will use one of those as its influence. My question is: what plane would resemble either Greece or LOTR?

Would Shapeshifters be classed as humanoid or non-humanoid? Considering that my interpretation of a shapeshifter/changeling's 'natural' form is always in flux, it's a rather interesting idea for me.

There's Ameran from the Expanded Multiverse plane Sertaria which has a big Greco-Roman influence, but I'm unsure if a big sentient spider would work there. The continent also don't have Green or Black mana, so that would be a bit weird as well. Maybe you could try and work your idea in another plane. Reshape the myths in interesting new ways.
"What is etherium but the next logical step?" It's all my fault.

Hell, if they steal from us, we'd be honored.
oh my god, AWESOME! Then changing the Slivers was your idea! haha lol

I have to admit, I'm kind of at a loss as to how to work with this character. He seems to have part of his backstory nearly identical to your previous character, and it's a really complex, honestly sort of confusing backstory at that. I think this character has sort of the same problem my character from this week does: there's so much backstory that the actual character isn't really coming through. There's just so much going on that Samash himself is getting totally eclipsed.
I do believe I mentioned I recycled his backstory, since that previous character seemingly does not exist. I suppose I'm guilty of emotional attachment, since I thought the backstory looked neat.
