What happens if a tolarian academy and a contamination are in play? Does it create black mana equal to the amounts of artifacts or just one black mana?

Just . No more, no less. Contamination specifically says so.

And so people say to me, "How do I know if a word is real?" You know, anyone who's read a children's book knows that love makes things real. If you love a word, use it! That makes it real. Being in the dictionary is an artificial distinction; it doesn't make the word any more real than any other word. If you love a word, it becomes real.

It gives you just one black mana.

Except if no artifact is controlled, right?

Rules question? Have you read the Basic rulebook already? No? Why not take some time to do that?

Yes that would be correct.  Contamination specifically states that the land has to be tapped for mana, if the person who controls the academy controls no artifacts then it would produce no mana when tapped.

Are you sure about that?  Tolarian Academy 's ability is still a mana ability if there are no artifacts, so activating it is still tapping a land for mana.

I'm thinking your conclusion is correct, since no mana isn't "any amount" of mana, but the point about tapping a land for mana isn't relevant.

I'm pretty sure, but after rereading it and thinking it through not 100%.  I know that the tolarian academy's ability is a mana ability whether it produces mana or not.  My thinking is that you are activating it's ability by tapping it, since it's a mana ability it obviously doesn't use the stack, but it's ability won't produce any mana since you control no artifacts.  So since the contamination states "if a land is tapped for mana...." I would conclude that since the land was tapped for no mana that it wouldn't be replaced by the mana.

I'd argue that it was tapped for mana, it just didn't produce any

The expression "tap a permanent for mana" is defined by the rules:

106.10. To "tap a permanent for mana" is to activate a mana ability of that permanent that includes the {T} symbol in its activation cost. See rule 605, "Mana Abilities."

There's no doubt that activating Tolarian Academy 's ability while it's a land is always "tapping a land for mana.

Well I guess based on that then it would produce even if it would normally produce no mana at all.  I stand corrected.
