I was playing duels of the planeswalker demo and I could not activate an ability where I could tap mountains to give my creature +1/0. That got me wondering if I could do that when playing MTG in real life?

ignore that game when it comes to rules questions you have to hit the spacebar to get priority, it autopasses otherwise. it is very frustrating to play

Yes. In a normal game, you can activate abilities any time you have priority, which happens during every part of the combat step (Beginning of Combat, after you Declare Attackers, and after you Declare Blockers, before Combat Damage ocurs). I dunno what's wrong with DotP.
