Some days you're the dog, some days you're the hydrant. Either way, I'm sure you got a bunch of cards that at least are casual playble. If the only value you find in the cards is monetary than I suggest you leave the game again, because that means you don't really care about playing.

Or worse, Beanie Babies.  I remember a woman telling me she was going to pay for her daughter's college tuition by selling those things...

Oh my God, we must have run into the same woman.  Nowadays if you put twelve Beanie Babies on a table with a "free" sign, at the end of the day there'll be twenty.

But I digress.  I buy boosters/boxes/fat packs for the fun of opening packs and the **hope** that I'll get something I want.  I like having sets of the commons & uncommons, plus extras to give to friends.  If there are cards I want badly I buy them as singles as long as I can afford them.

Before AVR was released I looked through the spoilers and preordered some singles.  In just a few days, many of the cards I preordered have doubled and tripled in price.  Glad I locked them in.

Wow, you do realize the problem right?

First of all, I know how you feel. The last few time I bought booster boxes, I got very few decent cards and not many were Mythic (best box I ever got had 2 Gideons and little else).

The only reason to buy boxes is if you want to get a good amount of commons and uncommons to build decks with or if you and several friends want to draft.

If there are rares and mythics you need, you best bet is to trade the bulk rares you get in a booster box (guaranteed that someone out there is looking for them) or to buy them as singles. It will actually cost you less to just pony up for a playset of Caverns than buying even one booster box and not getting any.

I, myself, have had enough of buying boosters, expecting to get the cards I need, so I'll be only getting them (for the most part) as part of a draft or sealed tourney, prize packs, need trade fodder or if I ever feel lucky (and even then, it will be only 4-5 packs) and will be getting the cards I need from other sources (just ordered $87 from mtgmintcard.com and will be getting several Avacyn, Terminus, Reforge the Soul and a bunch of other cards I need and will not have spent as much as for one box).

I will admit though, the pre-release boosters were really good to me. Got an Gisela and several bombastic rares and some Angel-related commons and uncommons from my first sealed pool to draft a decent R/W Angel deck and got a Tibalt from the participation pack (didn't top 8) and a foiled Angel of Jubilation.

The second pool went a little worse in that I didn't get enough good stuff to draft a cohesive deck, but I did get a Siguarda for a W/G/R deck and a Tibalt in the prize pack.

The third sealed pool gave me a Bonfire of the damned and a Restoration Angel and was nowhere near the first pool in quality, but that R/W deck did almost take me to the Top 8 (one win away) and the prize pack gave me a Bruna.

So out of 22 packs, I only got 4 or 5 Mythics, only 1 Foiled rare and the rest was worth less than $2. Since Tibalt and the rest of the Green and Blue stuff didn't fit into my colours (I play Black, Red and/or White) I traded most of my rares in bulk trades for stuff Like Avacyn, Terminus and a couple more Gisela.

but since I'm a Magic player, I'm bummed not to have recieved an Avacyn, Griselbrand, Sigarda or Grave Exchange...

If you want to sell those cards for money, wait 50 to 100 years.  Then again, Baseball cards are better at being sold for money in 50 years, so maybe you should collect sports cards?

A collection of hockey cards from 1995 would cost more than a collection of Ice Age cards, and the hockey cards will only increase in value, while the Ice Age cards will either increase, stagnate, or decrease in value, depending on whether WOTC decides to reprint certain cards.  Sports cards never ever get reprinted, unless they decide to do a retro or classic set, which I haven't seen lately.

$140 is the amount I spend on half a year's worth of Magic.

Sweet pull!

Most of that would be useless to me though. Just trade fodder.

This is gambling, you gotta think of the money you are investing as good as gone.

Me, I mostly only get the ones at pre-release and then buy some randoms from time to time if I feel like it. At this recent pre-release I cracked open a 1 x Temporal Mastery , 1x Silverblade Paladin , 1x Terminus , 1x Soul of the Harvest +2  others more forgettable. Afterwards I bought a 3 boosters of AVR 1 of DKA 1 of ISD and 1 of M12.
From those the only noticeable things I got was a second Terminus and much better, a foil Huntmaster of the Fells . Also one month before it I bought just 1 booster of DKA and 1 of ISD and got a Liliana of the Veil and Geralf's Messenger . Guess all of this is to make up for my bad luck with past boosters. (still cant forget that one time when me and my friend bought 3 boosters of M12 each and I got the most crappiest rares in the edition and he got 3 different titans).

Now does this makes boosters worth it? For the vast majority of editions I'd say not really. (considering boxes as well)
I bought them just for the thrill of the gamble and was lucky.

I myself never bought boxes and I doubt I ever will. Wouldnt mind if wizards ever released an edition with so many good commons, uncommons and rares that I just felt like I had to buy box though. (please wizards release less crap in your editions) I understand why its not likely though.

EDIT: Wish that wizards sold a "one booster per standard edition pack" before rotation. Something like that with something extra maybe (or a good price) would definitly make me buy it. Also because I have an hard time finding all of the standard legal boosters for sale where I live  =P

Sure, but the "profit" and even the "investment" aren't always monetary.

I can agree with that.  However, in the context of "the investing habits of someone who will undoubtedly die penniless" I think it's fair to say these are really spending habits, not investing habits.
