If you're someone who used to play, then quit, then started playing again, what was behind it all? As the title asks, why did you quit? What brought you back?

You stole my thread topic. I wanted to make this thread.

Personally, I can't imagine putting this game down for any length of time. I can't imagine the people that quit, then came back to Planeswalkers and the lack of mana burn. There was a guy at the Innistrad Prerelease that kept saying "stack damage". I let it go and didn't say anything since stacking damage did not make a difference of the outcome (I was losing; he was obviously the better player), but I didn't have the heart to say that it didn't exist anymore.

I don't know that I could come back to this game after so much has changed if I had been out of it for a while. I highly doubt that I would be able to teach anyone to play had I been out of it for a while.

LOL sounds like what has happened to me...  just started playing again stopped in 2004..
i had no idea wht the hell planeswalkers where
at avaycn restored prerelease i went up against somone with the red one and had no idea what to do to it...
finaly somone told me then told me i can attack it instead of the persons health

i was not a fan of mirridon block tho main reason i quit + moving
i liked my old black deck and goblin deck

One of the reasons I started this thread is because I have gotten so heavily invested in MTG in a relatively short period of time, and I'm wondering if "the Magic" will ever wear off and I'll want to quit.

It may, but you probably won't quit.

The "Magic" wore off for me quite some time ago. I started in 2007 and I dove all the way into Magic. I read the flavor text of every card, I read the novels, and I read the flavor part of the website a whole lot. This was both before I knew that competitive Magic existed, and before I had been disenchanted by RPGs.

I was more into fantasy then than I am now. I've quit RPGs altogether, and the flavor part of Magic went with it, especially now that I play the large share of my Magic games competitively. The "Magic" of picking up a card and knowing who the creature on the card is because I read the novel, or reading flavor text and knowing the meaning behind it is pretty much gone nowadays.

I'm sure this doesn't happen to everyone, but it also doesn't necessarily lead to quitting.

I started alpha/beta era, I only quit twice. The first time was around 2000, I sold 80% of my cards (the other 20% only stayed with me because I couldn't find them) after about a year and a half I started up again. I played until about 2003 and then sold out (still had not found the missing cards I put away)

I stopped because I only played type 1 (vintage) at the time and it was in decline, I was seriously getting board of winning every event (most decks I faced were 1.5 or something else, and only about 3 people besides me had a set of power, most only had a mox or two) it was very one sided, and other formats didn't really interest me.

I found my missing cards about two years ago, and got into EDH since I don't have any friends that play or that much time to devote to the game. I play maybe 1 time a week at a local EDH league.

If I get out again I'll just box up the cards and see if I get interested again when I stumble upon them.

I quit because nobody I knew played Magic anymore. I came back because I found out the store that closed down in my town reopened a better store with a better customer base down the street from where I work.

I never actually QUIT, though. I just couldn't play regularly. Once in a while I played Duels of the Planeswalkers with a friend when I went over and I bought Magic 2012 the day it came out to keep up with the game. The illusion deck in that game actually inspired me to play Fish again. Other than that, once in a while my girlfriend would want to play so we'd go at it with a sleigh deck and a suicide black deck. She really liked sleigh and thought suicide sucked ass... I didn't use my sideboard and just let her burn my Phyrexian Negator s. When I told her I was going to be playing in tournaments again she busted my balls because that deck sucked so bad and she didn't think I had good cards.

I miss her every day.

I have settled into a cycle of "playing" and "quiting" which tends to center around new set releases. I guess I'm more of a collector.

I have a few large boxes filled with nealy one of every card which I play various Limited formats with my wife. It's almost to the point of being a board game, that new pieces are added to. Dust off the box, throw in some new cards and play.

I haven't played a Constructed format since Champions of Kamigawa, I lost the need to "prove something".

I started playing when Invasion was released, and my interest waned through the Mirrodin block, mostly because I ran out of people to play with.  Just recently came back through playing Duels of the Planeswalkers on Steam, and I wanted to complain about the ridiculous power creep these new cards have. :P

I quit at 10th edition because I didn't feel like spending any more on magic, and the fact that a year later, theme decks changing to intro packs lost me any chance of returning.

I returned at Scars of Mirrodin, because I spent most of my time on Mirrodin when it came out, and the fact that I got over the fact that theme decks are now intro packs, and also that intro packs have 60 cards and not 41 cards.

I first started playing M:TG around 16 years ago. There was a group of us, that would play it during break time at school and I spent the majority of my paper round money buying cards. I had a collection spanning Ice Age to Urza's Saga. I quit because I went to a different college as my school friends, and never looked to get back into it.

About 18 months ago, me and the missus moved to a new area and everytime I was in the town centre I'd walk past the local gaming shop. A couple of weeks ago, I decided to go in, and see how much the game had changed. Considering I hadn't played since 5th Edition, I was expecting the game to have changed alot, which it hasn't really. Well, from what I could tell from watching the guys at the Avacyn Restored Pre-Release, anyway.

Bought myself a couple of event decks, and an Avacyn Restored box to rekindle my collection. I'm pretty sure that my old collection is still in my folks house, so I'll definitely look to dig that out as I'm sure there are some fairly sought after cards in there, including a playset of Wasteland !

I've been cobbling a deck together to go and hit FNM this week, don't care if I get my arse handed to me, it'll be good to hold some cards again.

My friends and I started in revised, around the time Fallen Empires came out.  We all just played casually. It's kinda hard to say exactly when I quit, and I never got rid of my cards.  But when people started buying booster boxes, and basically buying their way into better decks, alot of the fun went out of it for me.  The power creep also got pretty bad.  I do realize now that part of the percieved power creep (I'm not going to say there wasn't some), came from starting at a time when the cards were pretty weak overall.  I got back into it when I started working at my friends game store.  I got into EDH because I coukd use my old cards, and not have to invest alot to build a deck.  Then there was a minimaster event, which was a blast, then Innistrad came out, and the flavor of the set got me back in.  People can still buy better decks than mine, but I still have alot of fun, which is the important thing.

Casual, non-tournament player here; depends really on the pool of cards available, and if they interest me.

Really liked the strong Angel/Demon/Gothic themes started in Innistrad, and it paid off in Avacyn Restored for me. The interest will subside a bit in the next set if it doesn't appeal to me (lack of Angels/Demons).

Never really quit Magic per se, more of a check every year or two if new stuff came out I like.
