My take on the Helvault was that it was "ok". Sure nothing to write about--can't get very excited about anything that was in it but I did like the mechanics of opening it. It actually encouraged me to build two decks so I could gather more achievements in the event.
As a collector, however, this has been a VERY discouraging experience. I have one of the most complete collections of English Magic cards in the world. In a single promotion cards have been distributed in such a restricted way that they are already prohibitively expensive. From what I have seen thus far in the online sources for Magic cards I might as well just forget about trying to keep my collection complete. Is there really any reason to attend the Launch Party or any other future events. If this happened once there is nothing to say it won’t continue to happen and some “special” location will get the next unique promos and leave the rest of us out. I had absolutely no chance to obtain the unique cards and there is an unfairness in that that has slam dunked me as a collector. Mystical Tutor

For the Fantasy draft: what if you offered a promo card or something to the winner? Something usable, of course.

I know I'm in a super minority here but I was pumped to get the oversize card. The tokens and spin down counter were an nice bonus but honestly it could have just been the over sized card and I would have walked away very happy.

Ok, this material wasn't free. We purchased a ticket into the prerelease knowing we were getting things from the hellvault. Saying that the things we got for free is saying like a movie is free if you buy the ticket. I just want to get this point across. We paid for all of the material in the hellvault, the promo card, and the six packs. So what did we get?
Let's say 2 in 9 booster packs have tokens in them. A fat pack is 35 bucks. That means for five more dollars, we would have gotten 3 more packs. Sure, we wouldn't have gotten the oversized promo, but that's only worth about a dollar online (if you can even sell it for that much). Oh. We got a promo too. That'll probably sell for a few bucks...awesome.
Yeah, Wizards, you really screwed up here. What you did was basically distribute a "Christmas" bonus to thirty out of all of your employees. Of course you are going to get backlash. Hell, I'm probably not going to any more prereleases this year because of it. You just lost 60 bucks from one of your customers, who knows how much you'll lose from the others.
Now here's something new for your business philosophy, wizards. Like it or not, the consumers are much more powerful than your marketing department. You said you were listening to us, but from what I remember the Zendikar event got a bit of a backlash as well. That means you really didn't listen to us, did you?

I didn't attend the Helvault prerelease event because prereleases have recently been an issue where WotC has been asking more from the community without giving back equally. I'm glad that I didn't go, but I'm disappointed that I'm glad I didn't go.
What happened Wizards? I thought the Helvault was going to be a good step in the right direction. All you had to do was include a mythic rare inside of the Helvault for everyone and I would have gladly shut up and eaten my own snarky words. It could have been my "Restored" faith in the prereleases since you folks added the cash-grab new rarity, offered us a way for everyone to obtain at least 1 at the prerelease, and then replaced that single mythic rare we would normally get based on our dedication with useless "rare" chaff.
I'm glad that some people who posted are happy, but I'm also happy I didn't bother with the event. I will give you some credit, however; there was no Avacyn plush doll waiting inside... but I guessed the tokens correctly! Jeez, you guys at WotC are greedy cheap.

I'm a new Magic player.
I loved the first pre-release I went to. Opening packs without knowing what I was going to get and getting to share my joy with dozens of other players and friends was a blast.
I love the elaborate world-building and backstory of Innistrad (and the other planes as I learn about them).
Pre-release + super-flavorful goodies should = a great time.
I didn't care about the monetary value or even the usefulness really, of the stuff we would get at the pre-release. I was really excited about, in Doug Beyer's words, opening freaking Helvaults. Totally agreed - file under: awesome.
File under: meh. What was I supposed to be in awe of? I don't know what I expected, but it wasn't that. I liked getting the die - I didn't have a spin-down - but it's gray, and boring. I was hoping there would be something that would elicit a "That is SO COOL" from me. Maybe something shiny? Even if it was just the die that was shiny? Or the token? As I said, I genuinely don't care whether the contents were worth anything, but they were kinda boring. I guess...I didn't really get it.
Everyone else at the shop I went to was disappointed too, which really brought down the whole mood of the event. (And that was before they found out about the fancy Helvaults.)
I was so excited...now I are sad.

I actually liked the promos, and was fairly happy with everything (free stuff is good) until I read the arcana and found out that WOTC was screwing the small stores, once again, by sending out FREAKING JUDGE PROMOS to 30 of their largest stores in the country. Well, that's great if you LIVE IN L.A., Seattle, or some other huge city, but for the rest of us, it's like saying, "Hey, all you small stores out there? And all you small cities? @#$% you!" When will WOTC realize that it just pisses everyone off when they reward their largest, most prestigous stores and screw over everyone else? A big fail by Wizards, once again. And just to make myself clear... Wizards is a cheap ass from city of ass .

Psychologically this promotion is negative publicity because a select few got so much more and the expectation was equality.
Note, I've heard some NY stores charged as much as $50/seat because of Helavault on the salvations forum thread talking about the experience. That's not 'free'. Many stores charged additional money for attendance just because 'Helavault'.
Also, the contents of one of the 30 super-vaults hit eBay -- they were not passed out to players. I hope Wizards is aware of this and has suspended the advanced premier store which was responsible.
I am disappointed in the marketing team.
Bring back pre-release mythics... I haven't bothered with releases since you stopped doing them. Really glad I skipped AVR because of Helavault.
Also, way to shaft judge program by releasing judge promos in a non-judge venue. Do you know how hard your unpaid judging staff works? So out of touch...

My take; Oversized promo cards are not COMPLETELY useless, but pretty dang close. I mean there are people who will use them, but there's people like me who just kinda think they're neat and use them as trading fodder. Dice useful, tokens useful, oversized cards,..... Not really. I'd prefer the smaller versions cuz I can use them as commanders and put them in a regular deck. But, I got what I got, so can't complain. I have no real big issue against big cards. If you're really against the things consider writing to WOTC.

Instead of oversized promos you could perhaps release regular-sized, gold-border promos?
