The decks kinda trigger a bit of feelings of "meh" for me, but I'm guessing that I'm no longer the intended targeted consumer of the Event Decks, having purchased at least a box (or the equivalent) of each set since NPH, and can hence build the decks using what I already own with spending maybe about $10 on singles (vs. $50+ for both event decks).

Personally, when the contents were spoiled, I did cease to care about the prerelease and focused on spending for singles despite the fact I am an avid token collector. The fact that such a small number of stores got the premium Helvaults make me even less inclined to attend a pre-release based on hype around giveaways.
Additionally, I feel that WotC has forgotten about the psychological impact of hype and disappointment on their customer base.
This is a pretty decent article providing hyperbolic reactions of different player types to the Helvault itself: www.gatheringmagic.com/ryanbushard-05041...There was another well thought-out article here: dr.jeebus.sydlexia.com/?p=247.Personally, whe
I'm sorry, but those Event Decks seem terrible. The black deck is fine, but would have been infinitely more appropriate to release as a Dark Ascension Event Deck, when people were actually actively trying to get ahold of Gravecrawlers, Messengers and Lashwrithes.
The UW Humans deck looks really unfocused, not very powerful, and not good at showing off the potential of the new set. A WR Humans deck featuring things like Lightning Mauler, Accorder Paladin, Gather the Townfolk, Goldnight Commander, Thatcher Revolt, Riot Ringleader, etc, with maybe a Champion of the Parish and a Hellrider as some of the rares would have worked brilliantly.
I'm torn. I don't think they represent AVR at all. However I want to buy both the decks simply for the availability of the cards inside them. Metamorphs get sucked up pretty quick in my local store, and no one wants to trade gravecrawlers or messengers. Though I think they any zombie deck is a bit weaker with terminus in the mix.
Picking up both nets a pretty solid set of cards and you get a couple bonuses like a playset of Dismembers and a playset of Fiend Hunters. Both cards are a bit over rated but always seem to find homes somewhere.

Does this mean they're finally printing Jarad as a card? Sweet!
They kinda have to. They can't exactly play it up as Jarad and Niv-Mizzet leading the charge against each other, and then have the Mythics be Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind or a new version of him and Savra, Queen of the Golgari or the Sisters of Stone Death . I kinda got the feeling that Wizards really ticked off a lot of people with how they did the end of the Innistrad storyline, and pulling a stunt like the one aforementioned would only piss people off more.
I agree. They sometimes refrain from showing both new arts, and in this case may be because the gimmick is indeed the release of this guy before RTR.
And actually, having had more time to think, from a flavor standpoint, they can't really use either Golgari Legendaries. If this is supposed to be a preview of RTR, then neither of those cards work. Savra died at the end of the Ravnica novel, and she killed two of the Sisters early on. They could make a card for the last gorgon, but again, their only real choice for making a preview card for RTR is to make a Jarad card.

Any reason behind what got alternate art and what didn't? Was it a contract thing with the old artists? Was it a quality issue? Was it just random? The duals got new art and things that obviously wouldn't make a Magic card today, like Old Man of the Sea , but then old-stye cartoony stuff like Waterfront Bouncer got to keep its original art. I'd love to see an article explaining the decisions behind the new art, and any plans for it in the future.

Those lands are gorgeous. The art is the one aspect of the game which still manages to avoid disappointing me three times out of four.
So, I had to lie about my age to get into the survey for this set, that's always a good sign when they don't care about the opinions of mature and reasonable adults who've played their game for over a decade. And it was hilariously obvious what they wanted to try and prove; when it came to the questions about why you play games, every single set of options included either "quick to play" or "easy to learn" as an option, and in most cases they were both there along with one other option, which was usually the one I'd pick even if there had been other choices. Brand continues its reign of tyranny over both the creative minds of the rest of Wotco and the allowances of the world's teenagers; nobody is allowed to prefer a deep strategy game anymore, there isn't enough profit in a long-term appeal. Sadly, this survey didn't include any text boxes so I had no opportunity to vent about what utterly boring and uninspiring mechanics this set revolves around (soulbond is the worst, but Miracle isn't much better and is being hyped a lot more). No godbook either, though that's just as well as I'm not sure I could have found three cards in this godawful set to consider favorites, nor limited myself to only three picks for the worst.
But at least the Modo cube has one aspect that appeals to me.

I don't get why they're commissioning new art for cards they'll never reprint. Seems like a waste of time and resources just for online cube drafting. Especially since a dual land is cool, but not going to be a major draft pick. It comes off as being a tease.
As much as I'd like it if they printed these I don't see that happening. People throw a royal fit when the value of their cards is threatened. I hate that these cards doomed to have their old art and only be possessed by those willing to spend $30+ on a single card.

$30+? More like a $100+ these days and who knows how much more in a couple of years... WOTC should reevaluate the RL and reprint the Legacy staples in some shape or form before we are looking at a $1000+ playset of Underground Seas (hint: not too long from now).

I'm with you. The decks aren't great. If they really wanted to make the black deck a viable option, they should've thrown in 3 of either Geralf's or Gravecrawler. So neither deck is exciting to me in the least. That being said though, card value in the set is high. You will be able to pick up the event decks for like $40 for both. And you are getting well over that in value of cards. If I do purchase them, I will be doing it for trade value alone.

Yeah, the value is quite high, you get pleeeenty over $25. I'm glad that's the case, instead of there being one reprint cash deck and the other being only fair, modest, or meager. However, 2 Glacial Fortress does annoy me enough to pass on that deck (not to mention PMetamorph, whom I hate with a passion).
I don't know why it's taken them months to finally make the zombie event deck, and in an angel set of all places! But I can't ignore the value of it considering how long I've been wanting to make the deck. It's a fine shell to start work on, my patience has been rewarded.

The angle of the view was what interested me the first time I saw the card. Then I realized, you're looking through the eyes of the model in that scene. He's looking back and forth between you laying on the table, and his canvas as he paints you. Between that and the body hanging in the background (which I'd never seen before at card size), this is a really unsettling painting.

I liked the coverage story, but like the others I wanted more. It was like an intro to each section, an intro that we've already read about a dozen times. I want so much more from creative, as well.

If they use anything like umbras or Rancor then it won't exactly be 10 to 1. Plus I have seen a number of casual decks focused around enchantments, including strong auras like Armadillo Cloak . You don't see such decks in competitive tournaments because of the card disadvantage of auras but you do see them casually.

They do seem to shy away from overpowered Auras that replace themselves. Instead, they strive now to give creatures ways of using Auras to their fullest. The Planechase foil this time around obviously exemplifies that.

I love this Planechase stuff, it's even more inspired than the Commander cards. These new cards policy is a fantastic idea that should see introduction to all the casual products like the Duel Decks. These products just give so much room for designer exploration of any kind of card he can imagine, not just whatever the new set demands.

Why is this plane from Shandalar? This is the second consecutive case of them putting that name on a plane card which doesn't resemble anything from the Microprose game in the slightest! I want a card of that giant bug-castle where you fought the black wizard, or one based on the image you get after you destroy Arzakon, or even just a shop with an old man who sells you spells - anything that has *something* to do with the game.

Planes for all four Innistrad provinces make me happy. Adding one of the missing Alara shards, Ravnica guild regions, and Kamigawa areas helps, but they could have done better; likewise I am glad of New Phyrexia and Zendikar getting representation, but it could have been broader-based, and in particular the existence of distinct planes for both Mirrodin and New Phyrexia puzzles me, given that they're the same plane at different times.
The two planes from Belenon, which we've never heard of before, are a fascinating possible clue to an upcoming setting; if they're a red herring, they're a very imaginative one. However I'm irritated by the introduction of all these new planes without any followup at all on the more tantalizing hints from the first set of Planes. We've gained Regatha, Ergamon, Vryn, Mongseng, Kyneth, Azgol, Kolbahan and Fabacin, and gotten followup on Equilor and Shandalar, both of which are known from secondary sources, as well as for the existing planes. But there isn't a single new hint as to the identities of planes from the old Planechase which we know nothing or next to nothing about: Skybreen, Valla, Arkhos, Ir, Iquatana, and most importantly Luvion, Karthus and Kinshasa, all of which were featured only on promo planes. (There also seems to be a new promo plane set on yet another new world, Xerex. I intensely hope this is the first of another set of five, so that I can complete a ninth planar deck.)
I don't have much to say about the new non-plane cards, except that I'm disappointed that they decided to bring back Totem Armor but only to make new Auras with it in the same colors that already had them. I want Red and Black Umbras! They skipped them in Zendikar because of Limited; they should have made up for that here.

Solomon Draft! It's on the list of casual formats. You can either justify it as "Suleiman" sounding a lot like "Solomon" or note that the flavor text of King Suleiman contains the word "Solomon."
We already did a cycle of formats a few years ago, so several of the easy ones (like Booster Tutor for booster draft) were already used.

I'm a bit disappointed they went with so much totem armor to the exclusion of some of the more powerful old timey auras. Props for rancor, Pollenbright Wings, and the new, (but very powerful) spirit mantle. But no Ancestral Mask, Armadillo Cloak or Serra's Embrace? Yeah, there's a resurgence of MtG in the college kids demographic. So they put on their big boy pants and tried to make that look cool. Wizards is ultimately cheese, though, when college kids who are into gaming are more easily swayed by cool RPG ads, not weird ones that overlap reality. Sony does it wrong many times. E3 has plenty of trailers that do it right. Get researching.

What I want to know is which core set(s) didn't include basic lands? Or do they not count as cards?
They don't count as cards. Every set has to have them, so if you include them in any "Most sets" competition, they always win by default, which is boring. It's kinda like the unspoken addendum of "Not counting Mistform Ultimus and friends " when talking about creature types.

Maybe they'll create a new spider with 5 toughness as the new standard so we could use it outside of spider decks.
There's currently a 4/4 spider for with Vigilance and Reach (imagine some green abomination of a Serra Angel ) that's been previewed for Duels 2013. Current money is on that being the new spider for M13 as well.

Maybe they'll create a new spider with 5 toughness as the new standard so we could use it outside of spider decks.

mmmmh Thanks for the infos, that's certainly interesting but it's not really that exciting. I would gladly swap vigilance for a couple of points in toughness (or maybe a reduced price).

Well a CMC of four got you Giant Spider so I guess one more mana for +2/+0 and Vigilance isn't so bad.

Deadly Recluse is what I call a good spider. A spider card that could find a place in normal decks. Spiders historically got a bad job, they need to cover for Green unability to defend against flyers. one mana for 2 power and vigilance cerainly isn't bad but, in what should be the "creature color", is it that good either? Considering that the original giant spider was already below the curve I'm not convinced. Just my 2 cents.

Small set boosters contain basic lands, but from the associated large set. Back when boosters came with an eleventh common rather than a basic, basic lands only came in "tournament packs" (a box containing 30 basic lands, 32 commons, 10 uncommons and 3 rares), preconstructed decks, or land packs (sometimes included in fat packs; often distributed to tournament organisers).
My point is that not every set contains basic lands - it would only be mildly surprising if, at some point during the game's history, the card printed in most Magic sets were something other than a basic land.

Why wasn't Winds of Rath included in the Savage Auras decklist? It could have replaced Predatory Urge:
It's appropriate as a multiplayer board sweeper.
It's not on the Reserved List.
It's thematically on-target for the deck and synergistic.
It's maybe $2.50 on the secondary market.
Flickering Ward would have been extremely good in this deck as well making it more desirable to players than it was/is currently. Additionally, Tradewind Rider would have been so much better than Dark Hatchling in the Night of the Ninja deck. Winds of Rath, Flickering Ward, and Tradewind Rider are all cards with minor value on the secondary market that are friendly to casual players and have yet to see a reprint.
