How often do jobs in Creative open up? How would someone (Barinellos) go about get hired by Creative?
It's really not even about giving niche cards to black.
It should be about giving black cards to Niche.

@Cai-ann: That's not exactly a fair question. The problem is that the walkers aren't all on the same scale to start with. Bolas is obviously the most powerful, but what constitutes power? Liliana can control a lot of undead at one point, but does that make her more powerful than Ajani? Sarkhan can turn into a dragon, but he's vulnerable to mind magic, does that make Jace more powerful?
Pretty much this.
The relative powers of the various walkers can best be compared to the various powers of deck archetypes in the various formats, its an enormous game of rock-paper-scissors; every strategy has certain strengths and certain weaknesses.

I try to do it a long the lines of mutants in X-men. Their scale is based off of the amount control they have within their realm of power. Not sure how this would work in magic exactly, especially with walkers who have additional specialties. But Jace isn't compared to Ajani, because their abilities are different. jace is compared to other telepaths, so most known walkers would likely rate fairly high.

@Brady: riffing off of Skibo's creature question, I was going through some Mirrodin cards and ran across the atog. Just curious how you approach the more quirky fantastic races you come up when designing. Do you guys comb through the list of peculiar races to see what fits into any giving setting, or does that really come later?
I believe Mark Rosewater said at one point that Atog in Mirrodin was a design decision, probably spearheaded by him, as part of the "look how the value of cards changes in this environment" thing they had going with Shatter and Terror , and also because Maro loves atogs.
here, and he also talks about other Mirrodin repeats: www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/Article.a...
So I don't think Creative had a big role in that sort of thing.

True, Creative might not have much say on what cards get reprinted, but they are in charge of giving creature cards creature types.
I was actually having this very discussion over in the Rules Theory forumn. My contention is that Ferrovore should have been an Atog.
… and then, the squirrels came.

That might have been design as much as flavor. Without exception, all atogs have symmetrical pumping. The power and toughness are raised at the same rate at the same time.

That kind of reminds me of people trying show that there is a pattern to the color of planeswalkers (It got more and more convoluted as new sets came out).
Atogs are pretty straight forward, they eat something to grow stronger. How that is shown mechaincally is irrelevant to me. Ferrovore eats artifacts to grow stronger, he should have been an atog.

Yes and No. They still create the style guides, which heavily feature creatures and how they look on the plane, so I'm still curious how creative decides to find a home and if they have a list of what they think will be a good fit.

I would imagine it to be easier to create an initial list of what wouldn't work on a particular plane. With some care and imagination just about anything can find a place on a plane, and be given a suitable personality for it. For instance, myself and LordArchon created a non-canon lineage of Soratami in Zendikar for his Zendikar D&D campaign ( community.wizards.com/zendikardnd/go/thr...) which as far as we are aware doesn't break any established canon. Certainly in Innistrad it would be easier to pick, "have they appeared in any gothic horror settings? No? Then they can find their jolly little selves a different plane" So how DOES creative establish what races are suitable in a plane?

Better question, what does Nicol Bolas want with the lightbulb?
