I think we in the forums can actually answer both of those.
1. You ever skinned your knee, then the next day, its scabbed over?
Same concept with Avacyn. She took a year long nap.
She had a year to heal.
Not sure if it counts as canon, since the information was relayed from Mikaeus's perspective, but one of the articles on the site said that the Helvault is a sort of stasis, and that it was the reason her wound wasn't killing her. If that's the case, then the stasis should also theoretically prevent healing as well.
Actually, that was more than likely a fear of Mikaeus' rather than the truth.
Consider that the only person on Innistrad that knows the metaphysics of how the Helvault works was in fact Avacyn.
Mikaeus couldn't have possibly known what happens to the beings captured in it (it's honest to god, basically a PokeBall).
Here's how he saw it.
Best case scenario, we break open the helvault; a bunch of demons come out, but so does Avacyn. Everything's hunky dory.
Worst case scenario, we break open the helavault; a bunch of demons come out, and Avacyn falls out of stasis and dies. Humanity is royally ****ed.
He didn't want to risk the extinction of his species (and a mass panic and loss of faith in the Church he presided over) over a hunch.
So he did nothing.

It shouldn't be surprising. What happens when you tap the Helvault to exile Avacyn, Angel of Hope, then destroy the Helvault to return her to the battlefield? She's considered a new object by the game rules.
Also, damage wears off during the cleanup step!

Is there any reason Iona, Shield of Emeria  WASN'T typed as Giant Angel? Because... I mean, look at her. She's massive.
I do not know if it counts as answer to this, but I remember reading some article about the Zendikar angels... her massive size seems to reflect more of the exaggeration by the stories passed on about her. So probably that's why she isn't counted as a Giant Angel.

A giant is supposed to be a specific species and not just a Big Thing. Otherwise a Giant Ambush Beetle  would be. Actually that reminds me of another question I had ages ago. Twilight Shepherd  is an angel. Angels basically look like humans with wings on. Except Lorwyn/Shadowmoor has no humans. So is Twilight Shepherd a winged elf instead? Or what? The details are obscured.I guess I could also ask when there was last a lion  in a temperate climate, but whatever.

Lions used to be all over southern Europe and India-Levant-Asia not too long ago, and they lived in northern regions during the ice ages. So I guess 12.000 years more or less to answer that question  That's probably a lot colder than temperate, though.

Hey Barry, before I even ask, are you qualified to answer questions about pre-revisionist story archs?
Will we ever see thrulls again? Are there any plans to include the long lost Sandruu in a sotry arch (I would love to see the minotaur walker return). Who is Korlash, does this mean Dakkon is dead? What is the current state of Ulgrotha? Is there really goign to be a Shandalar story arch? What is the state of Old Phyrexia? What ever happened to Gerrard after he became a part of Karn? Why isn't Karn an artifact?

Don't call me Barry. And I can answer them about about half of the books and all the comics.
Anyways, I can answer some of those.
1) Ulgrotha is firmly under the Baron's thumb. We saw that in Future Sight as well as a number of cards about the Dark Barony.
2) Old Phyrexia fell into the Blind Eternities without anything holding it together from the 9th sphere. It was in an article some time ago before New Phyrexia started up.
3) Gerrard is part of Karn's gestalt consciousness, same as Urza and everyone else that died in the Legacy Blast. Karn is just the dominant pesonality.
4) Karn isn't an artifact for the same reason Tezzeret isn't an artifact. What I want to know is why isn't his frame an artifact/colorless frame instead of the Eldrazi clear frame.
