As a near-complete side note, if they did make a supertype, I suspect it'd be more likely to be called "Flash" rather than "Instant".

There was actually a followup question to that one on Mark's Tumblr:

kylesnerdstuff asked: You've talked a few times about the instant supertype and every time you mention missing out on design space. In my my mind this would make no difference as they would be functionally identical. So can you please elaborate on this design space that you will never be able to utilize?

The reason I'm vague is it has to do with changing how the whole system works. A new dynamic would make things matter that don't matter now and we could design things to take advantage of that.

For example, once speed means something, we could create periods where things speed up or we could alter the rate at which they work. It's hard to do stuff like that now because the essence of what we'd be doing would be very hard to grok because it's not how players think of the game.

And so people say to me, "How do I know if a word is real?" You know, anyone who's read a children's book knows that love makes things real. If you love a word, use it! That makes it real. Being in the dictionary is an artificial distinction; it doesn't make the word any more real than any other word. If you love a word, it becomes real.

Instead, the rules are embedded on the "enchant [object]" and "equip" keywords, which are what have rules. "Aura" is meaningless and merely points out this "enchants" something, while "equipment" functions primarily as a referent for other cards.

That is not true. Only Equipments and Auras can be attached to something, and that is not defined by the Equip keyword, which is just an activated ability.

Even if you removed all abilities from an an Equipment or Aura, they would still be affected by the rules for those types. An Aura with no abilities would still be put into the graveyard if it was not attached to anything. An Equipment with no abilities would still become unattached if it was equipping a noncreature permanent.
