We've all seen this tribe from time to time... they are normally white or green. Sometimes they give you life, other times they care about combat... personally, I don't understand this tribe. They seem to be a random extra tribe that Magic has just to be another tribe... Personally, I'd like to see them gain a mechanical background, instead of being "those guys who are better off as clerics". The specifc mechanics I'd like them to have is a foil to artificers. I'd like to see them care about enchantments. Maybe tutor them up, make casting them easier, or destroy them. Through history, monks and priests have burned tons of books, as well as been inspiring. Making, destroying and tutoring enchantments embodies all of this, and kinda' gives the monks of Magic an identity. Just immagine what you could get from a Yavimaya Enchantress or Aura Gnarlid if they were combat monks, made better from seeing and experiencing the world? Does anybody agree with me on one or more points? If so, or if not, please share why.

Actually most Monks in magic have a very "Monk" feel, because they perfect themselves to embody an idea. Monks are historically speaking, philosophers, comedians, teachers, scientists etc. In fantasy, monks also pick up martial arts, because it coincides with the concept that most monks share being that the body is a temple to preserve and strengthen, so that one may transcend their physical reactions to things like pain or lust. Fantasy monks typically embody a very mixed Western monk's psyche with an Eastern monk's martial arts background for a super-human character-type. In Magic particularly... Humble Budoka - Is pre-Shroud, Shroud, and at the time considered to be a man the "size of a bear". He doesn't need equipment or augmentation, and he's entirely unafraid of Terror Rhox Meditant - Being in tune with nature allows him to enlighten you, making him card-free. Avacyn's Pilgrim is a very western monk, a traveler who provides extra resource. Azusa, Lost But Seeking is one of several monks in Magic which are all "working" towards something, for Azusa it's having a massive landcount Rhox War Monk - Embodies Bant's concept of perfection, tough, but not unfair, powerful, but giving. Geist-Honored Monk - It's power is not it's own, she is a conduit for the strength of spirits, be they living or haunting.

The fact a card's mechanics can be worked into some monk archetype or other isn't really the same as a mechanical identity. Pelakka Wurm could have been printed as a monk, and so could Souls of the Faultless . Any creature which involves drawing cards, attacking, blocking, or generally providing benefits of any kind could fit into this incredibly broad concept of a monk. Which leaves our pool of non-Monks at... Sleeper Agent and Serpent Warrior ? Wait no, Serpent Warrior represents the theme of self-denial in pursuit of martial prowess; I guess it's a monk. I like the enchantment idea. But really, it's always seemed to me that Monks might as well be Clerics.

A monk is a religious entity. It's different from a cleric in the sense that a monk is self-motivated and reserved. Monks aren't supposed to preach, spread the word, or evangalize. They simply cater to themselves, their monastery, and anyone they meet who they might be able to help. Their worship or their practice revolves around self-discipline, by being devoted, humble, and solitary in their thoughts and actions. I've designed a tribal theme with Monks in a project development set named "Bloodlines of the Orient". Holylands
Show
This is the lands of the monks. They are a very compassionate people. They seek to comfort the hurt and heal the wounded minds, bodies, and emotions of other living beings. They're defended by spirits whom protect the monks. The spirits protection them because the monks are "favored souls" and the spirits delight in the good nature and good deeds the monks carry out. They also have a martial arts division whom are chosen by Nirandao and given the authority to defend their people with force if needed. Nirandao is an ancient planeswalker whom was an original creator of the Orient. He along side Brahma created the Orient and all its inhabitants.
In Bloodlines of the Orient, the Monk theme revolves around spirits and Ki counter abilities (a custom crafted theme). These two functions represent their mastery of magic (especially chi— life energy), martial arts, and their divine connection with the spirits (from an esoteric point of view).

I think I must be one of the five people on Earth who have never seen the Kill Bill movies, nor care about them.
