Meditate The printed wording appears to make it possible to skip X turns to draw 4X cards, but the Oracle rendering does not have that option. Why not? Furthermore, one should be able to cast Meditate for no discernible effect at all. This appears to be the proper interpretation of the printed wording. Choose X. Draw four cards X times. Skip your next X turns.

At the time meditate was printed, the wording you see on the card was the standard template for additional costs. It did not mean you could do it multiple times. Other cards had this same template as well (eg, Fling ), and they have been now updated to use the modern templates for additional costs. Meditate can't quite be updated to the same template as fling because "skipping turns" doesn't really work as a cost, so instead the turn-skipping is just part of the effect.

While the original post is clearly coming from an incorrect point of view of assuming that colon=activated ability at that time, cyphern brings up a good point. As cards like this were templated as additional costs, should there be some way to word it such that it functions as one? A countered Meditate should still cause you to skip your next turn.

"When you cast Meditate, skip your next turn. This ability can't be countered. Draw four cards."
A precise restoration of original functionality! Horribly confusing wording, but hey, nobody's actually going to look at it anyway, are they?

Mediate is a staple in a competitive legacy deck (high tide), so yes, people are going to look at it.

If it was worded similar to how cascade works when it is put on the stack skip your next turn. Or when you cast meditate you skip your next turn.

Then it starts to combo with Stifle .
And so people say to me, "How do I know if a word is real?" You know, anyone who's read a children's book knows that love makes things real. If you love a word, use it! That makes it real. Being in the dictionary is an artificial distinction; it doesn't make the word any more real than any other word. If you love a word, it becomes real. --Erin McKean, Redefining the Dictionary

As an additional cost to cast Meditate, give yourself an emblem with "The next time you would begin a turn, instead you skip that turn and this emblem ceases to exist."
Yeah...no.

I don't see what problem that would solve. Certainly not Meditate , since the issue there is that skipping your next turn can't be a cost.
