Looking for any insight or ideas on how to refine this deck for casual FNM play.

My goal is to get to Birthing Pod + Vorapede combo as quickly as possible. Use the Pod on Vorapede for Carnifex Demon . Before the end of your opponent's turn preferably, or when necessary use the Carnifex Demon to reset the +1 counters you have from blocking/attacking/podding creatures (ideally use the ability twice because...), then next turn Pod the same Vorepede into your second Carnifex. Bounce -1 counters between them with as much black mana as you have, as needed (will destroy any of your own creatures without undying).

Win by continually attacking with your Strangleroot+Geralf+Vorapede while wiping your opponent's creatures (also nice that Geralf can be used to attack, then be destroyed on their turn, for 2 and untap on your upkeep). If either Carnifex gets destroyed, sac the remaining one into Sheoldred, Whispering One and start returning things.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Viable mechanic?

Here's my decklist, in CMC order.

4 Birthing Pod
2 Mimic Vat

2 Hex Parasite
4 Birds of Paradise
2 Viridian Emissary
3 Strangleroot Geist
2 Geralf's Messenger
1 Glissa, the Traitor
1 Entomber Exarch
1 Phyrexian Obliterator
2 Phyrexian Metamorph
1 Tree of Redemption
2 Vorapede
2 Carnifex Demon
1 Sheoldred, Whispering One

3 Tragic Slip
2 Beast Within
2 Black Sun's Zenith

4 Woodland Cemetery
10 Swamp
9 Forest

seems like a relatively viable combo, but looks very easy to disrupt as there are many pieces involved.

on a side note one of my favorite cards for pod is Skaab Ruinator .
False, black bear.

I thought about Ruinator, for sure. He's a really good card, I just couldn't recast the blue on him. I'm playing the cards I am partially because it's what I had access to.

Did okay tonight at a standard tourney, 2-2-1. Last round, game 3...lose to Gutshot with Sheoldred out. Saddest of times.

Still having fun with the deck, but not testing terribly well against control.

Any thoughts/suggestions? bump

The mana base is really touchy. GG for Strangleroot and BBB for Geralf's, BBBB Oblit. One of the reasons I love cards like tree and viridian emmisary. I've swapped out the phantasmal image for another emmisary for potential mana-fix.

Updated the original list to current.

Still open to suggestions.

Ok, it seems that you got the right idea for a pod deck (for the most part anyway). You have a better starting build than some people that have been posting around here lately. You're lacking some staples from / pod lists (ie skinrender, acidic slime, solemn, ect...), I've taken the liberty of listing notable , and Artifact cards below. Perhaps it might be able to give you some ideas.

Notable creatures for pod builds include:Spoiler: Show

phyrexian rager - card draw = fun
skinrender - removal
morkrut banshee - removal
massacre wurm - board sweep (a non pod build's version of Elesh Norn)
grave titan - titan, nuff said

Notable cards you're not using: Spoiler: Show

thrun, the last troll - mainly for SB, your call though
acidic slime - why is this not here? it's an auto include for most pod builds
brutalizer exarch - great removal, nice tutoring, only downside is that the cmc 6 slot is kinda crowded already

Notable artifacts:Spoiler: Show

spellskite - kinda useful, if you can make room for it
sylvok replica - great against that one pod hate card that stops ETB abilities
solemn simulacrum - usually an auto include for pod builds
wurmcoil engine - is a beast

Try and only run 1 messanger, I know it's nice, but the triple is makes it difficult to hard cast. I feel you're running too many non-creature spells. I would cut the beast withins and Zeniths and possibly move to them to SB. There should only be around 2-5 non-creature spells that arn't pod. Most of the time you're going to want to draw a creature, not removal. If you want to good all around removal, try running Ratchet Bomb s. They're great with glissa. Tree is a SB card, take it out of the MD. If you're finding the double in strangleroot kinda hard to get off sometimes, then run 3 emissary and two geist instead of what you have now. You're 6 drops are lacking, which is weird since its the slot that usually gets the most crowded in a / pod build.

Against control, your best bet is to get a Thrun for the SB. Also Spellskite can prove useful as well.

I hope this helps/made sense, sorry if my thoughts were kinda speratic.
How to autocard: Spoiler: Show

[c]Blaze[/c] = Blaze

you can also...

[deck]
38 Relentless Rats
22 Swamp
[/deck]
=
38 x Relentless Rats
22 x Swamp

Sorry to necro an old thread, but this was the most fun deck I've ever played and I miss it now that RtR's out.
