Does anyone have a good souce for for +1/+1 or -1/-1 counters? I'm also looking for spirit tokens like you get from the back of a booster pack (I've found some of these online but its going to suck to pay 25 cents each for them) I'm getting ready to go to my first FNM and don't want to show up with my little scribbled on strips of paper that I use at home! As usual thanks for any help!

Counters can be anything.  Spare change, buttons, dice etc.

You can get creative with tokens.  A few friends of mine bring in stuff like old Pokemon cards, Star Wars miniatures, or they'll just use other cards from other decks, face down of course.  I tend to save every token from every pack for these situations (and now for Horde).

Don't feel bad about scribbled on strips of paper... they're a lot better than what you'll see many people using. That said, printing out your own tokens on some cardstock is probably a better (and cheaper) way of getting some, and you can customize their appearance. Lacking that, you can try asking around the card shop for extra tokens (Don't expect much, though, because most people who have tokens will be using them), but anywhere you buy them they'll end up more expensive than seems entirely reasonable.

I generally ue dice for counters. Also, a heads up on something: +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters mutually annihilate. That is, if a creature with three +1/+1 counters on it gains two -1/-1 counters the end result is a creature with a single +1/+1 counter. No other counter type does this. So if you see +1/+0, +2/+0, -1/-0 counters or what have you (you see some odd counter types on older cards) this rule does not apply to them.

I think I'll just whip some up on card stock like you suggested. Thanks!

I think his point is that you can just use one die to represent +/- counters on each permanent, as there will only be one type of +/- counter on it at a time, unless you are playing in a format that allows some older cards with their interesting counters.  To put it simply: dice suffice.

Also, my friends like to use dice for tokens, with the number representing the power/toughness (since they are usually the same number).

Yeah, the Shadowmoor rules card says "like matter and antimatter". My friend, a physics major, laughed at this, simply because antimatter is just another form of matter.

I colorcode my counters. For Modern, you'll likely need:

*White for +1/+1 counters
*Red for -1/-1 counters
*Other colors for other counters.

For emblems (specifically Sorin's and Venser's), a die helps.
