You should equip a hearty pirate chuckle to go along with this box. Maybe start practicing in your free time

What are they made of, metal? Like a belt buckle or something? Countersinking them into the lid or all around the box? You've obvisously got some skills, but getting all of those on the box perfectly spaced will be no easy feat.
Personally I like simple, so I would just draw out a large image of the Magic logo on the lid and burn it in. Especially because you were thinking of going for an old treasure chest look.
It's your call though.

EDIT: Now that I think of it, you could totally throw a couple of rope style handles on the sides of that box if you wanted. Or any kind of handle really.
they are made of pewter i havent recieved them yet so i do not know about quality. i think ive found a technique for wood burning that would really look nice. www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5-U8bazU7E&feat...

That looks pretty cool. I like that it's very random in design, but I wouldn't like how unpredictable it could be.
If you're into it, then go for it!
Make sure you post pictures, but if you're going to use that high voltage technique on your deck box, please make a video.

yeah after thinking it over i dont think ill do it on this box. maybe on future projects. ive decided to go with a torched look on this project. here is a sample piece i did to see if i would like it. without stain
with stain. i only torched half the board so i could see the difference. the outside will be like this while i am concidering painting the inside. have not decided just yet.

That stained piece looks super cool. The burn really highlights the grain and gives it a nice rugged look. Nice choice. I can't wait to see it all put together. So you're painting the inside... my suggestion, line the interior with felt .Should be easy to get your hands on and it wouldn't take much. With that old, burnt exterior... when you open it up and see all those cards sitting in a bed of red or green even purple felt.... I think it would look sharp. Just a thought. NK

Wow, well done. That's going to be one HEAVY mother though. I made a 5-row box a few years ago, and it's close to 30 pounds. It's heavy enough that I wouldn't want to make it any bigger. Not sure how much varnish you intend to use, but here's my motto: If you have varnish leftover, you haven't used enough varnish. :P Seriously more varnish = nearly waterproof, and a sexy gloss

ok i have a small update. work has been busy so i havent had the time or the energy to work on it too much.I used a blow torch on the whole box and i like the look other than a few spots that will be sanded to make it lighter and some will get some extra burn time. I really like the idea of a felt inside to I think I will attempt this. although my wife says it will be tough to get it all smooth. guess ill find out later. but this is the first torching so its not a finished product. as far as the final finish i am not sure if im going to go with a varnish or some kind of rubbing oil. keep the ideas comin you guys are helping me build my box!

Ok, you knocked it out of the park with that torch job. Looks amazing! You're wife is probably right, it will take some patience to get all the felt flat and tight, but I think the payoff is worth the effort. Oil or varnish... either one would look good with this box. Looks really good. Keep it up!
