I have an on-again, off-again relationship with the Master Transmuter artifact deck. I love the interactions to death, but it always seems like aggro or combo will just stifle the fun of the deck before it gets set up. This deck's matchup against control is excellent, since there won't be much pressure and once you get the engines going the card advantage and inevitability will overwhelm the control opponent easily. I agree that the Zoo matchup is very luck-based, since them drawing multiple grudges is just nasty.
I must say I love the inclusion of Lightning Greaves in this deck, it gives the deck the speed and protection it needs. It can certainly catch a zoo opponent off-guard if you can equip while they're tapped out.

Last time I checked, 3x Wurmcoil Engine at $15 a piece =/= Budget. Then again, at least he isn't playing with Ravnica lands or some other dual lands. I'm really hoping Wizards reprints the entire "spot land" M10 and Inn lands in future core sets. They're cards that all players should have access to with relative ease.
Back to the column, though. Lightning Greaves is amazing beause it just shuts down so many things that make Master Transmuter a sad card. If you untap with a Transmuter in play, you pretty much can win the game. I was a huge fan of Thousand-Year Elixir back in the day because you could safely field a Transmuter and let her draw removal, haste her, and slide her safely back into your hand. You end up countering their removal spell AND get to drop some sort of wonderfully nasty jank card in response. I think, personally, being able to provide haste at instant speed is a bigger boon than shroud, but only initially. Shroud really helps this deck significantly in the long run. My biggest issue, previously, is that Transmuter decks tend to die very hard when the Transmuter is gone. With decks relying on a few key parts of their engine, why aren't more decks running Memoricide, Pithing Needle, and the ilk to drop problematic cards from their opponent's hand and library? Greaves? Hot gnu teck. Wormcoil Engines are just too good at their job to not warrant an inclusion, but I wish there was something we could use in its place.
I really, if anything, would like this column to either change its name or at least have some semblance or want for restrictions. Some people, myself included, love BoaB for what it does, which is to provide a lot of us with springboards for our own decks.

This is an awesome deck!!! This is a deck I have been working on for a little while I have been trying to build a deck around Necrotic Ooze and this is the Deck Design I got I was wondering what everyone thought.. R8 4 R8: Necrotic Rock Ooze(Ooze you daddy?, LOL) essentialmagic.com/decks/View.asp?ID=906...Granted I probably could have took the deck numerous ways.. I personally like Necrotic Ooze and can not wait for more things with activated abilities to be printed. I personally made it ROCK colored because of the mana fixing and the fact you have tappers to work with Royal Assassain. Granted I most likely could have went Black White, Black Green, Black Red, Black Blue, Black Red Green, Black White Blue, or even Black Green Blue. I like the diversity of Necrotic Ooze and the artwork. I feel as though he is quite underestimated especially in Standard, I believe that he will do some mean things before he leaves Standard. But, I could be wrong who knows. It is a pretty fun build. Granted my variant is sort of weak against spell decks, and it is susceptible especially to burn and control. However I feel as though it does well considering the fact that it is running side by side with a Blue White Blade deck in Double Headed Giant.

I have to agree with CiulineIhmenjo. There isn´t anything "budget" about a deck with 3 Wurmcoil Engines, 4 Darkslick Shores and lots of other stuff that costs around a ticket/piece :/
I liked BoaB more when it had the ~20 Tickets restriction.

Actually I kinda have to disagree mainly cause this is Modern we are talking about, where it's a format defined by a 600-800 dollar deck. This deck is pretty budget IMO when compared to that.

Just run drowned catacombs instead of shores, there's no 1 drop spells in the deck that you need to cast on turn 1 anyway. Perhaps if wurmcoil engine is too expensive play Blightsteel Colossus instead.

Plus, this is a NON-ROTATING format. Those Wurmcoils will be good for a LOOOONG, loooooooong time. They are one of those cards that is really just a good investment. They can swing the game on Zoo matchups really well.
I would bring your trade binder to your LGS and see if you can start acquiring them. Even if you don't use them in this deck, you will be able to use them in just about any deck.

That's the question though - does a deck designed for the Modern format really belong in a Building on a Budget article? It seems that it would be impossible to make a deck for this format truly budget friendly (just having a lower cost than other incredibly expensive decks does not qualify as "budget").
