And as soon as you scare up a few million dollars to make it, you will!

In other words, given that we are in a day and age when mother-eating Battleship is getting a movie, did it occur to you that if there was profit to be made it would have been done already?

Battleship only just got greenlighted in the last decade, they could be working on Magic.  There's no possible way it could be worse than Monopoly (seriously, ************************* Monopoly movie!  The game was originally intended as a cautionary exercise against capitalism, and I'd say it has both succeeded wildly and failed miserably, simultaneously).
I'm looking forward to the WoW movie and hope they put as much work into the story as they do canon lore (which is honestly entertaining, despite the attention heaped upon the "HAY GUISE BUY THIS LICENSED MERCHANDISE" aspect).

Magic has a robust enough storyline to work with for a prospective filmmaker.  Especially now, as we planehop and follow plenty of side-stories already like the comics and Planeswalker novels, there's room for additional media.  There's one minor logistical problem -- marketing would no doubt want the set of the release year to be in the same setting or feature the same characters, but movies take a while to make, and so do sets.  Both can change at different stages and one can suffer delays.  But, it's not an insurmountable problem

As a fan, though, I really have to ask myself if I want there to be a movie, though.  Just off the top of my head, recent memory, we've got vaguely fantasy/nerdy things that Hollywood has somehow managed to get horribly wrong...

Avatar: The Last Airbender
Dungeons and Dragons (First try, the second is arguably watchable)
His Dark Materials
The Dark Is Rising
Every video game they've ever tried with (A couple might be fun for camp value)

While they've at least done passing justice to...

The Lord of the Rings (AWESOME)
Arguably, Harry Potter (Seven movies means hit or miss)

Again, I didn't thinkvery hard on this, but the Hollywood track record: not good!  You'd think some of the concepts would be decently hard to screw up!  But you start with the most simple, generic fantasy verse ever, D&D -- seriously, you had close to total freedom to use every old cliche in the book as long as you frame it right -- and you get... well you get a pure load of manure with one try, to the point where forking the same concept over to the Syfy Channel results in a vastly superior movie.  So even if it seems like a Magic: the Gathering movie would be awesome... Even if it looks like we've got a strong story to tell, and a very well defined concept that it would be hard to deviate from in such a way as to result in total crap, remember two things:
1) No IP survives severe enough mismanagement.  Lazy screenwriters, meddling execs, a primadonna director, Underpaid under-talent actors: there's a LOT that can go wrong with a movie, and it doesn't take much to mess up the finished product
2) Wizards can't even keep their books at a consistantly readable quality, ranging from the great to the disgusting, with seemingly no rhyme or reason as to why.  Now compound this with fact one.

That said, if wizards announced tomorrow that there was an M:tG movie in the works or, luck beyond luck, one based on a known good factor in the storyline like The Brothers War, I'd be workign to keep my hopes in check.

Round 2: (16-8-2, 4 kills)
Round 3: (18-9-2, 1 kill)
Round 4: (22-10-0, 2 kills)
Round 5: (56-16-3, 9 kills)
Round 6: (8-7-1) [current round]

Personaly, I think the Magic brand would work better as an animated T.V. show then a movie. and even as a movie, animation would be a better medium.

Animation would alow them to easily show magic doing magic stuff without a crazy special effects draining the budget. They could funel that savings into talented writers and voice actors and spend more on quality animation.

The problem arives with what story to choose. the Weatherlight arc would be amazing, but we would need a trilogy on LotR level or worse to get it all in.  They would more likley choose a block story....so which one??? Probibly Ravinca right? except now were leaving out planeswalkers,  and walking.  WotC want walkers to be a big part of the game. So now what do we pick.  I fear at this point a generic original like the first D&D film would rear its head, and I would rather not think about that.  If they were to pick a book, The Brothers War is in my opinion the best MTG novel thus far, but its mostly about artifice.  No wizards flings spells, no walkers walking,  The actual "magic" doesnt really show up til the end, and even then, its old cannon.  I can only see wizards pushing neowalkers

As a series, they could have the walkers walking.  My ideal would be story arcs, mabey 2 per season.  Each arc could be a plane, or walkers story, but with the freedom to change and keep changing like the game its based on.

My real worry though.... is marketing.  Hollywood has shown in its drive to apeal to the widest audiance posible, it will water down material, or force changes to get a rating. I Fear that they dont understand TCG fans, and they would push the movie at a young audiance, perhaps to young.  Laast thing I would want is a saturday morning cartoon, or a Spawn(comic book movie)  style watering down.

If it was gonna happen, its gonna get stuck in development for a long time while all that gets worked out.

I wouldn't be surprised if they made a movie about the tournament scene. Think Boobby Fischer meets Magic. Poor kid, down on his luck sees two rich guys playing Magic. One of them asks him to play and they find out the kid's a natural. I mean this type of movie writes itself.

lol
Even better, they take him on a road trip with out telling his parents. They get to worlds where this natural is entered into a special draft tourny with a brand new expansion they have not previewed or spoiled,  but somehow they already know how to use the new mechanics with out missing a beat!!

Funny story:
InQuest Magazine (I think it was InQuest) had an oversized Chaos Orb which I totally rooked someone into allowing into a (non-sanctioned) game.
I had a proxy card that was a Mountain with "Chaos Orb" written on it. When I played it, my opponent cried foul:

Him: "WTF? a Proxy? no-one said anything about Proxies. Do you even own an actual Chaos Orb?"
Me: "Yes, but I thought it would be better to use a Proxy."
Him: "No way. If you're going to put a Chaos Orb in your deck you have to use your actual Chaos Orb."
Me: "*Sigh*. Okay."

I pulled out this huge Chaos Orb and placed it on the table. He tried to cry foul again but everyone else said he insisted I use my actual Chaos Orb and that was my actual Chaos Orb. I used it, flipped it and wiped most of his board.

Unsurprisingly, that only worked once and only because everyone present thought it was hilarious.

Hi guys!  So, I'm a sort of returning player to Magic.  I say sort of because as a child I had two main TCG's I liked.  Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokemon.  Some of my friends branched off in to Magic, and I bought two pre-made decks just to kind of fit in.  Like I said, Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon were what I really knew how to play.  I have a extensive knowledge of deck building in those two TCG's.  However, as far as Magic is concerned, I only ever used those two pre made decks.  I know how the game is played, and I know general things, but now I want to get in the game for real.  I want to begin playing it as a regular.  My question is, are all cards ever released from the time of the inception of this game until present day fair game in a deck?  Or are there special rules?  Are some cards forbidden or restricted?  Thanks guys, and I will gladly accept ANY help lol.

That's what RPJesus tends to do. That's why I don't think he's a real person, but some Magic Card Archive Server sort of machine, that is programmed to react to other posters' comments with obscure cards that do in fact exist, but somehow missed by even the most experienced Magic players.

And then come up with strange combos with said cards. All of that is impossible for a normal human to do given the amount of time he does it and how often he does it.

He/It got me with Light of Sanction , which prompted me to go to RQ&A to try and find if it was even possible to do combat damage to a creature I control (in light that Mark of Asylum exists).
