Ask and ye shall receive: www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.a...We now have Creative (or at least Doug Beyer's) official stance on the language problem. In essence, they came to the same conclusion we did. Yes, it's unrealistic. Yes, it would be interesting to show this issue. No, it would not be a good idea to do this every time. Since we don't want to do it every time, it doesn't come up.

I am the stone that comes not from the sea. I am the blood but the blood is not me. I am the key to the door with no locks. I am the mainspring that winds broken clocks. I am your tears on the chains of the rack. I am your gift and you can't give me back.

Not I. My question was guessing the plot Shards of Alara.

I loled at the daily. Generally speaking it brings me back to the issue of 'do you really want to see Sarkhan Vol listening to..' It is fun once, it get's obnoxious if you have to see it over and over. We get it that they all have ways of learning the languages in different ways. It is a drag to see them learning it every time.

I find it difficult to accept that this is a coincidence, could it be that they read the forum and answered our question?

Well he got a real letter, i know that. If he wanted to address the forum discussion, i think he would have just said, "THere's a debate in the Wizards forums..."
I'm guessing maybe a lurker sent in the E-mail. Or perhaps it's just coincidence. This is a pretty common question, and this thread has been around for weeks, sooner or later a discussion is gong to line up with a question by chance.
… and then, the squirrels came.

Sorry to jump in suddenly but I had a thought while lurking. Planes aren't necessarily interchangable with, say, planets, and we don't know if they operate the way real planets do. For example, the majority of planets are obviously not habitable. We don't know if the same is true for planes, and if you can't just assume suspension of disbelief for people being able to understand each other and that has to be explained in a way that makes sense, I don't know why glossing over the nature of planes makes any more sense.

Wizards never glossed over the nature of the planes, there are several severely inhospitable ones that Urza visited during his explorations in Planeswalker. Sure there are some inconsistencies and things that aren't explained that we have to assume disbelief about (I'm still trying to figure out how the conflux worked) but this is one that was never mentioned or addressed in the canon, and as we and Mr. Beyer concluded, it was never mentioned for some very good reasons.

Well, it certainly is uncanny. Anyway, not entirely sure about the Creative's response to this. It is the kind of thinking that can easily lead to lazy writing. "Oh, yeah, we know that there's a plot hole there and we're completely contradicting what we said before. But you know what, it makes it cool, so we don't care."

I've wondered about that. If the Mirrans built an aether-proof rocket and aimed it right, could they fly off and touch down on Alara? Does the space outside a plane extend indefinatly like ours does (or doesn't, or whatever it does) with no seams connected to others? Or on the edge of one of the flat planes (what's under them, anyway?) just stop abbruptly in a wall of not-stuff? I could probably do this forever.
