Took a RDW to FNM tonight:

Creatures (19)
4x Stromkirk Noble
4x Reckless Waif
2x Grim Lavamancer
4x Stormblood Berserker
3x Chandra's Phoenix
2x Hero of Oxid Ridge

Sorceries (4)
4x Arc Trail

Instants (9)
3x Incinerate
3x Brimstone Volley
3x Volt Charge

Planeswalker (2)
2x Koth of the Hammer

Artifacts (4)
4x Shrine of Burning Rage

Lands (22)
22x Mountain

Bitterly, bitterly disappointing.

Lost 3 rounds, and got a Bye.

Round 1: Blue (splash of Red) Delver Illusions (1-2)
Got heavily controlled and saw too many Lord of the Unreal , copied by Phantasmal Image to burn them down before I died.

Round 2: Green Dungrove / Primeval Titan (1-2)
Pretty much every game saw a turn 2 Dungrove Elder . Managed to burn past them in game 2, but game 3 was a turn 2 Dungrove, a turn 3 Dungrove, a turn 4 Thrun, a turn 5 Titan, a turn 6 Titan.

Round 3: Blue Delver Illusions (1-2)
Just my luck - different guy, similar deck. Again, pretty balanced 1-1 followed by a game 3 where I'm sitting with 7 lands out and 3 in my hand.

A lot of bad luck, and a lot of mana screw. But Grim Lavamancer has lost all favour in my eyes. He's almost never been of any use to me, so I'm definitely going to replace him with either Goblin Fireslinger or (less likely) Spikeshot Elder .

Hopefully bad luck was the main issue tonight - typically the deck was strong between rounds and won every single friendly I played. We'll have to see...

Keep the Grim Lavamancers.

Cut the Reckless Waifs for Goblin Fireslinger.

Also, where's the galvanic blasts and gut shots?

You don't want Waifs because you want to be playing a lot of spells and you want your deck to be fast and not dependent on flipping.

Grim Lavamancer is worse than Reckless Waifs.

It should be about giving black cards to Niche.

I would assume because Grim Lavamancer has a chance to be useful late game, but early game its not likely to do much of anything.

Where as Reckless Waif has a chance to be useful early game, but late game will be pretty much useless.

In most cases for a deck like RDW, a chance to be useful early on is better then a chance to be useful in the late game.

Getting stuff in the grave to fuel Lavamancer is much, much harder now. That makes Lavamancer pretty much only useful late game, and even there he's frail. In most games, he's a situational shock.

Waif is incredibly powerful on Turn 1 on the play, against Control, and late game (because the opponent has few spells so its easy for either of you to flip it.) Basically, the only time waif is bad is in the midgame, but grim Lavamancer is not that much better in the midgame, which is defined more by phoenix and shrine.

"the build is all about reach, its not about attacking your creatures into theirs

too many creatures in the format"

This is directly from David Caplan as I just asked him on Facebook.

That's why Fireslingers are good. Lavamancer is too hard to fuel without running burn.dec, which tends to be bad because burn is inherently less efficient than creatures at converting mana into damage.

That said, I'd not have run waifs in his list anyway, because he was much more likely to play multiple spells in one turn.

I'm just starting to get back into Magic the Gathering Online, I wound up purchasing a complete set of M12 and Innistrad commons & uncommons to jumpstart my collection. Looking over the cards I have acquired, I settled on a RDW-style deck (since I don't have the lands to really support multi-colored decks). I fell in love with the Goblin Grenade art, so I used that as the starting point for my deck. Obviously this isn't a tier 1 version of the RDW deck but its my starting point.

As I slowly grow my collection, I plan on swapping out the Gorehorn Minotaurs (though they have proved quite potent) and adding in a playset of Goblin Chief . I also want to add in a playset of  Shrine of Burning Rage ASAP.

Right now I'd like to keep this deck Budget friendly, any help you can offer would be appreciated.

Creatures
3x Goblin Tunneler
4x Goblin Arsonist
4x Goblin Piker
1x Goblin Wardriver
4x Goblin Fireslinger
3x Gorehorn Minotaurs

Sorceries
4x Goblin Grenade
1x Arc Trail

Enchantments
4x Goblin War Paint
2x Furor of the Bitten

Instants
4x Incinerate
4x Shock
4x Geistflame

Lands
19x Mountain
