Question that contains AVR spoiler: Spoiler:
Show
What do you guys think of the new planeswalker that was spoiled today? Flores' article left me with the impression that it would work better for a UW or Esper control deck, but what about UB?
I think that card would only be good late game, and by that time UB has already stabilized and is pretty much ready to drop bombs or finish up with Nephalia. Early on, you'd wanna save mana for counters/kill cards. Especially against aggro, I can't see this Planeswalker standing it's ground especially for it's mana cost. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, I may not be seeing this through the correct point of view.
Maybe early on it could be good as long as the board is clear, but I'm still kinda iffy about it.
Here's another question with an AVR spoiler:

What do you guys think about the card Killing Wave? Seems to me like a really nice addition to UB, I might be wrong though.

Killing Wave is bad bad bad for Control.
I'm not sure about the Planeswalker. I think she's better in a more tap-out deck than the current UB Control builds, but I honestly don't know, I need to test her.
It's really not even about giving niche cards to black.
It should be about giving black cards to Niche.

I agree, Killing Wave is not good. Maybe in a B/x aggro deck that's looking to deal damage before turn 7, but not here. I can't imagine why a person would sac their Geist of Saint Traft for 3-4 life against U/B control. I think I'd still rather have Jace, Memory Adept than Tamiyo in my U/B deck.

Thoughts on the spoiled cards. Spoiler:
Show
The planeswalker will make the UB mirror more interesting (either player's drownyard becomes Ancestral Recall, and until the ultimate gets on-line it just shuts off their drownyard or puts them a land behind) but I see that as about it as far as its utility in UB. I think Jace will ultimately just be better, but time will tell.
I like it in some kind of tempo U/W tapout control that plays Gideon, Venser, Tamiyo, fiend hunter, cloudshift, snapcasters, ghostly flicker, and all that kind of stuff. That deck seems like it'll be missing something else to put cloudshift/flicker/restoration angel over the top but we'll see what else AVR spoils.
Killing Wave is awwwwwful in UB (unless not saccing any creature just kills the opponent, and in that case you paid a ton of mana for what black sun's zenith does for less). If it sees play at all, my feelings are that it'll see play in some kind of BR aggro/burn deck that will be fine with spending spare mana to clear out blockers or push through extra damage.

Testing with her is absolutely pointless because we don't know enough about the set or the metagame she'll be featured in.

It's just not strictly constructive since you don't know what she'll be up against.
I've been playing an Esper list pretty silimar to yours a page or so back, MrIndigo. I'm having a hard time letting go of Batterskull in the main because it's just so stupid for so many decks to deal with. Thoughts on that over a second Sphinx?
Welcome to 2012. Blue has the most efficient creatures, black has the all-in monocolored aggro deck, the most controlling deck in the format is green-red, control decks lose to aggro in attrition wars, and counterspells aren't an answer to fatties.
Pack Rat is like Bitterblossom and Tarmogoyf had a black baby.

Vapor snag is a pretty rough tempo loss against Batterskull. I guess you could say the same about Sphinx. Batterskull is awesome against the rest of the format though.

That's basically my logic. Sphinx is marginally better in the Delver matchup because it blocks flyers if it sticks, but I like the turn earlier Batterskull, and that it also doesn't care about your fancy mana base. I guess I'll try a 1/1 split of Skull and Sphinx.
