TEAM RED WINS!!! (Average score 7.5/10 vs 5/10)

w00t! w00t! Congradulations Team Red! Your design prowress has trumped your opponent's, and now you will love forever on in glory! To the entire Red Team, I congradulate you on making the tough calls throughout the competition. There was never a time that I had to choose between players, as you were mostly uniform in how you voted. That definitely was a strength in this competition, as you cut away the least able designers in order to set yourselves up for the final victory.

To Sebanovich and Echo_Robin in particular, great job guys! You both had many high-scoring entries over the course of the competition. Extra-special congradulations for finishing with TWO team-mates! I set up the competition so that as weaker designers left, the smaller team was often left with an advantage. You both are excellent designers and did a great job!

Card Gradings Show

Sebanovich - 7/10 - While checking in on the contest, I saw you posting this card at first, and was like "NOOO!" because it made no sense whatsoever. That was a card that would've required an explanation greater than Mindslaver methinks! Making it work only during your upkeep removes that confusion. Now, if I play this, I see that I'm not taking my next draw step after my upkeep, but am instead taking it after my second main phase.

The card still has LOTS of wording issues (like how can you play a card that can only be played during target player's upkeep when the target has yet to be chosen), but the purpose of the card is very clear. Much more so than before.

I actually feel that this card should be Uncommon though. As you've stated, there's not a lot of phases/steps that can be moved around. As such, the design space for these effects are limited - which means that making it an Uncommon will help conserve space (as a Common would mean that you should expect LOTS of these kinds of actions). The use of the card is interesting too. A player with a dead draw that wants to attack given they draw something good can't rely on that happening. Very much a "gotcha!" card, and very in line with Blue for that reason.

Echo_Robin - 8/10 - Wow. That's a great card for this round. This card actually breaks two rules; but one is broken so often that you probably didn't even realize you did it. That second one is "Players pay mana for spells". It's not a rule per-se, but I never go to a new player and tell them that "hey, you spend mana to cast spells, except for some that you can play for free". I just tell them to spend mana, and players discover cards like this on their own.

This card is appropriately costed. It costs you a card to play (which is the only copy of it you may have), costs 4-mana, meaning no super-early shenanigans. Is a Sorcery, so no instant-speed messiness. You need other cards to discard as well, and NOT lands either. While apparently very powerful, this card would rarely lead to a blow-out win, as you can't mulligan your way to victory with it in ANY way. I also like that you made this a Rare, and NOT a super-type (which would've made it Mythic, methinks) to counter-balance the fact that this will be a sought-after card, and Wizards can make more money with it at a lower rarity like this.

Fantastic job.

TherealphatMatt - 5/10 - Okay, a lot of problems with this card, which definitely contributed to your downfall. First, the sorest thumb here is that you failed to achieve the criteria. You attempted it, but I think the round beat you (which is okay! I set it up to be hard).

How did it beat you? Well, while draw-triggers are COOL, they are incredibly difficult to make happen, and are impossible the way that you've shown it. This has nothing to do with the rules of the game - which fully support this kind of card - but rather the fact that we live in a real world where people can CHEAT. If everyone played Magic Online, this card wouldn't be a problem, as the system would automatically set this card up for you. The problem occurs in real life. What if someone picks up a card, then palms it for this card (which was already in hand), then reveals it instead of the card they actually drew? They could tap down all of your creatures perfectly.

As such, you can't make this card work unless cards are being revealed beforehand, regardless of whether or not this card is drawn. That kinda defeats the whole purpose of what you were trying to set up.

Next problem is that this card has no Black in it, so why did you include that? Tapping down all creatures can be stretched into red (it has appeared on two creature-rares before; Shrieking Mogg and Thundermare ), but not into Black, and Haste is Red, and stretchable into black, but not enough to make this double-black.

Other than that, this card could work. Assuming you could SOMEHOW make the draw-trigger work, then I like this card. I would have just asked that you drop the "may" clause to make it a requirement that everything becomes tapped; as the randomness that would cause would be VERY VERY Red.

YEAHH!  Bravo red team, especially EchoRobin, who stole the show.

Congrats to phatMatt (and the rest of your team), you were close and your design were at least always intriguing.

Thanks Yarium, I had lots of fun, even though your challenge sometimes gave me headaches.  And I hope you're ready for it, but now that the contest is over, you'll have to answer many many questions.

Now I'll go finishing grading 10round contest, go check out all of my entries for this contest, then come back with my list of questions, starting with what was your favourite and least favourite designs of mine, if you feel like checking it out.

As a side note, I know sometimes the wording of my cards and most time, the flavor of my cards were not top notch.  This is due to the fact that the challenges were such at a high level that it felt the wording and flavor were secondary, as long as you get what I meant, you would grade accordingly.  An obvious mistake of mine and I would be honest, kinda lazy on my part.  Let's just say I'm happy you weren't too harsh.

Wow.   The thought of people cheating completely slipped my mind.  But, fair enough!  You've got me there.

Congrats to Sebanovich and Echo_Robin!  You guys really did design some awesome stuff!
