The MTG shop closest to me just started running FNM.  But at the first event I attened, people were busting out duel lands and power 9.

On the Event Finder FNM is listed as Standard Format for this store.

Spoke with the shop owner, and apparently he let the store regulars (the people who runs with the power 9 decks) decide what format they are going to run for the night.

Am I pretty much SOL if I am looking for some Standard Format FNM at this location?

Have the store owner point out the primary individual involved with running the event.  Take him aside and inform him that the reason that they can't choose Vintage or Legacy for FNM.  Those aren't options the DCI provides for this type of tournament.  They can sanction a regular Vintage/Legacy tournament and run those on Friday but if they want to get the FNM designation & promotional cards, they have to choose an approved format and run the tournament under it.  The tournaments are advertised on Wizards' website and it's discouraging and unfair to a player who finds one listed there saying that a particular format will be played, bring what they need for it, and then discover that they're unable to play because of circumstances as you described.

Thanks for the reply.

I did talk to the individual who ran the show.

He said that by hosting legacy/vintage format does not prevent a Standard legal deck from entering the event.  He also encourage everyone to bring their "best" non-Standard deck to the event.

His reasoning is that the store Regulars do not have "good" and/or "fun" Standard legal decks, and enforcing Standard legal decks will alienate more of the established people.

I didn't feel comfortable of pressing him further on the issue at that point, since I am the new guy at the store and I will be the one making a scene.

BTW, he's also the person running the power 9 deck.

Now that you mentioned it, it did seem like a personal promo card farming setup. =p

He is, bluntly, a jerk.

Also, he's wrong.  If you bring a deck with two or more copies of Ponder, it's not legal in Vintage as it's Restricted in that format.  Similiarly, Mental Misstep is about to be Banned in Legacy (1st of October) but will still be allowed in Standard.

As I said, there's nothing preventing them from running a sanctioned Vintage tournament on a Friday.  They just can't run it as FNM.  The point of that designation is to provide an incentive (the promo cards) to players and tournament organizers for them to run the formats that are easily accessible to all players.  As far as the DCI is concerned, the formats that qualify are Standard, Draft, Sealed, 2HG Standard, and 2HG Sealed.

Little surprise that the guy with the most to gain from running it as Vintage is the one choosing the format.  Inform him that he either has to run the FNMs as Standard (or one of the other accepted options) or sanction them as normal events.  Doesn't matter one whit that you're the "new guy," right is right and wrong is wrong.  You're the former and he's the latter.

Thanks, you bring up some very good points.

Is there any place to report to WotC so maybe they can enforce the legal formats of FNM at this store?

I get the feeling that the owner will ban me if started arguing with the event organizer about what's right and what's wrong. =p

Send the information through the following link:  the store name/location, the date of the tournament, and what the owner and players told you.

wizards.custhelp.com/app/ask

They'll take the necessary steps and the store/players will either choose and follow a format allowed for FNM or sanction them as regular events.  Request a confirmation email that the issue has been discussed with the Tournament Organizer so you'll know it's been resolved.  Then use the Event Finder to see what format they're running and you should be good.  However, if they continue to violate the rules, reopen the ticket and inform the DCI that it's still happening and they'll take appropriate action to force compliance.

Thanks for the help!

I will do as you've suggested! ^_^

Just an update on the situation.

Between the regulars and shop owner, they have decided to stop running FNM and run future Friday night event as sanctioned vintage.

The last time I was there, I still saw unsuspecting freshmeat who would show up with event decks.  But I doubt anyone would return after their first 0-2 defeat against the vintage decks there.
