We have experimented with colored text, but if you try to print small text in CMYK, you get ugly, blurry text.

I quite like the idea of putting curly brackets around the target: "target {creature with an 'r' in its name} fights another target {creature}"
On the other hand, I'm pretty sure that trying to include literal curly brackets in actual card text rather than just to encode symbols at this point would break Multiverse in entertaining and unexpected ways...

We have experimented with colored text
...for what?
What, exactly, would prompt the need for colored text, when according to post #7, bold text has never seriousy been considered?

Reading? Seriously? That's just too much effort.
I'm still curious as to what sort of text R&D wanted to color.

There's gray text on the DFCs.
And so people say to me, "How do I know if a word is real?" You know, anyone who's read a children's book knows that love makes things real. If you love a word, use it! That makes it real. Being in the dictionary is an artificial distinction; it doesn't make the word any more real than any other word. If you love a word, it becomes real. --Erin McKean, Redefining the Dictionary

Optional abilities should stress the may in "you may," just as payment options -- " or " were once italicized. This would include modal effects, different possible targets (a la Disenchant) and multiple kicker costs.
Using italics is not possible. By putting text in italics, you make it have no function.
206.2. The text box may also contain italicized text that has no game function
its silly to think that italicized text would have no function if used this way, the same way that thinking DFCs aren't magic cards. If italics were used inside the rules text its a pretty safe assumption that the definition of reminder text (and other pertinent rules) would be changed.

Look at it the other way.
Because italic text is used to indicate text with no rules function (and has done since 1993), they won't use it to emphasise rules text. The gain is not worth the confusion that will be caused.

Exactly this. Players have been trained for 18 years and counting that it's safe to ignore the stuff in italics. Introduce italicised rules text, and, best case, players take longer to understand cards with italics on since they have to decide whether it's ability word, reminder text, flavour text, or actual rules text. Worst case, they'll keep getting it wrong...
