The amount of diversity really depends on what you are focusing on. If you are focusing on the big three (control, combo, aggro), then yes, there was not as much diversity as Islands said. If, however, you are treating each archetype as the unique deck that it is (ie no all combo decks are the same), then there clearly was a very diverse metagame. I am a control player, and I really want control to be viable in Modern, but I do not think all combo decks are the same. I think the metagame had a lot of diversity because how you play against each archetype differs at least a little-bit (and in some cases a lot)

I really don't see how GSZ pushes midrange decks into the broken range.
On Islands going into rantmode: I partially agree that the combo hating was an overreaction. I mean combo had abysmal matchups v.s. zoo, and majorly won because of 12post's presence. However, it is true that combo took a big chunk of the meta.

It was revealed to me in a dream. All the cards were in my dream except for three slots which I plugged in as Vault Skirge.
FULL DISCLOSURE: The dream was post AVR so there was a copy of Slayer's Stronghold. I decided to keep it pre AVR in my post here.
EDIT: I just remembered. The Skirges might have been 2x Whipflare and 1x something else, probably War and Peace.
EDIT2: Currently 4-0 in my first four games with this. My opponents have been very angry. I fought off a Wurmcoil from Grixis for six turns before I found my second Dispatch. Jeez, I can do a lot of damage.
EDIT3: Streak broken. Lost to an unexpected Overrun. Cracking a Shrine for 10 wasn't enough.
How Kedi tests his decks: Spoiler:

also, I've been playtesting this deck in my sleep today that kinda freaked me out

I'm literally frothing at the mouth mad right now. they have managed to literally ban 2 of the 4 decks i have in modern and neutered another one mostly >.< they killed: Dragonstorm 12 post and A green combo deck i was working on using genesis wave and GSZ, since one of the 2 are now not viable, its gonna be ALOT harder because honestly, chord of calling is terrible and i really don't want to use it.
not only did they manage to kick most of my decks into a corner, they managed to Keep Aggro just fine on top, and STILL not let control get better because theres still twin keeping afloat just fine and that deck stomps control like nobodies business.
Also Zoo is stupidly powerful in this format, and i know they won't touch it because they love when the metagame is turn stuff sideways and win.
I'm guess i'm stuck with Deathcloud Rock now to see if i can get it viable. also i'll attempt to put martyr.dec together again and see how it does, but really, thats just not fair to me.

So let's see.
Living End Splintertwin U/x Control Urzatron Zoo G/W/x midrange (kavu justice, aggro loam, hatebears, etc.) Affinity (both red and U/W) Dragonstorm (peer through depths and pact of negation are still legal, but keep whining, Islands) Martyr Doran rock or Doran Zoo RDW Breach/Goryo's Vengeance
Those are just the one off the top of my head that are capable of either turn 4 wins, or are established as having a good enough pile of cards to answer the metagame. So yeah, I'm pretty happy about that. I don't have any asinine bias regarding 1cmc blue card filtering, so it's not hard to objectively look at the potential metagame.
@Drworm - I play living end/splintertwin combo at my shop usually, though Kavu Justice is a deck I've toyed with, as is mono-red affinity. Maybe once people stop having kneejerk reactions about their pet cards getting banned, we can have a logical discussion about how the metagame is going to shape up.

I don't believe dragonstorm is gonna be viable razor, note it needs actual draw spells to keep going and now it has nowhere near enough really to be consistant AND keep the correct mana ratio going so that you arn't whiffing more times then not, had 1 of the 2 draw cards been banned i would have been ok with this, but both seem overmuch.
also WHY is mental misstep still banned? seriously that card would have helped alot more with keeping alot of the combo in line and made the metagame more diverse.
In other news i'm REALLY confused as to why they kept FoW in legacy but not MM.
Seems to just be a knee jerk reaction on that one more then anything.

Well, I play MTGO for my modern fix and I tend to play in spurts where I go for a week getting a lot of games in, then take a little break. If I start seeing these in any kind of numbers winning games, then you will be proven right (in my eyes). It is a small sampling, though much larger than yours, so it would have a wide margin of error, but it will give a reasonable picture. I'll even go you one better. I will write down the decks and record of all the decks I play against or watch, and we will see how much of your idealized metagame actually exists.

Surprised to not see the droves of people complaining that their $120 playsets of Vesuva are yet again worth $2 a piece. Give it time I guess.

I'd be more interested to see how many shops failed to unload their shoals.
@Drworm - Your anecdotal playlog is a nice gesture, but I think I'll stick to MTGO daily results, as well as organized event results. I like how people still think I'm just pulling these decks out of thin air...

Does nobody remember when Ponder was banned previously? Didn't it just come off the ban list for Extended last year? Didn't Wizards specifically state that they were testing to see if it would be feasible or not? They tried it, it didn't work. Kudos to them for at least trying.
People complain that they won't get into Modern because 12-post and Infect-Shoal are killing the format.
Now people complain that the format is no good because they just nerfed 12-post and Infect-Shoal.
Nobody is ever happy.
