So, you're browsing around the forums and you see this new Modern section.  What is this new format, you ask?  I'm here to explain, random forumgoer.

Modern is a new format that, in the most general way to describe it as possible, consists of cards printed in the current card frame.  This means cards that were printed in the current card frame, so if you want to use an older card in its From the Vault form, or a card from the new Commander decks, or even an FNM promo of an old card, you're out of luck.  To be more specific, if it was printed in any core set from 8th edition onwards or any set from Mirrodin onwards, it's legal with the exception of the cards on a banned list.  I'll get to that next.

The following cards are currently banned in Modern:
Ancestral Vision
Ancient Den
Bitterblossom
Chrome Mox
Dark Depths
Dread Return
Glimpse of Nature
Golgari Grave-Troll
Great Furnace
Hypergenesis
Jace, the Mind Sculptor
Mental Misstep
Seat of the Synod
Sensei's Divining Top
Skullclamp
Stoneforge Mystic
Sword of the Meek
Tree of Tales
Umezawa's Jitte
Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle
Vault of Whispers

If anyone has suggestions on anything else you think I should add to this thread, please let me know!

You could've just said "all artifact lands" to make it simpler. They piss me off. I mean, I'm a HUGE artifact fan, but they make using Metal-Craft easier. >_>

Example: My Carapace Forger would become a 4/4 automatically, no fun there. I already got a Coat of Arms to suit me up.

Hooray! My deck is completely legal! :D

Also, not to piss anyone off, but talk with other players about Worldslayer . I honestly love this card, but by the time I can get a strong enough creature to equip it I'd already be dead. I'm sure SOMEONE has been able to find use for it.
Flag Mono789 August 15, 2011 10:19 PM PDT
I can't say all artifact lands since Darksteel Citadel is legal!  But anyways, I don't do that because I want the list to be all official and whatnot.
Flag richeyz August 15, 2011 10:25 PM PDT
Meh, wasn't playing around when artifacts flourished. In my opinion, if you're going to make an all-artifact deck -which I will-, use Darksteel Forge to piss people off. I'm waiting until I get Co-Op money to buy two of them.

They've already made all artifact decks. They were deemed too powerful so they were banned.

Even after they banned some of the cards in it, it's still pretty explosive. This is an off-the-top-of-my-head list, but try out your own artifact deck against it:

4 Glimmervoid
4 Darksteel Citadel
3 Mox Opal
4 Blinkmoth Nexus
2 Scalding Tarn
1 Blood Crypt
1 Watery Grave
1 Steam Vents
1 Islands

3 Spring-Leaf Drum
4 Thoughtcast
4 Disciple of the Vault
4 Ornithopter
3 Memnite
3 Frogmite
4 Cranial Plating
4 Arcbound Ravager
4 Master of Etherium
4 Shrapnel Blast
2 Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas

Haha I was going to point that out. I miss running 4 Citadels, 4 Seat of the Synod, and 4 Ancient Den in a deck with Arcbound Crusher and Leonin Elder in it.

For an all-artifact deck just put in 4 Worldslayer and a Darksteel Forge

u mad bro?

Add 4 Perilous Myr so even the opponent can suffer from the effects of Worldslayer

You should just stop posting most likely if you are serious.

Modern is an experimental format that will be played at the Magic Online 2011 Community Cup, a response to players' desire for a non-rotating format that is more accessible to newer players. Modern consists of every block and core set using the modern card frame, currently consisting of MirrodinKamigawaRavnicaTime SpiralLorwynShadowmoorShards of AlaraZendikarScars of Mirrodin and their corresponding blocks, as well as the stand-alone expansionColdsnap, and the core sets Eighth EditionNinth EditionTenth EditionMagic 2010Magic 2011, and Magic 2012.

Just to make it easier for newer players, here is the list of the Modern Sets

Flag Mono789 August 18, 2011 8:37 PM PDT
I actually specifically avoided the use of the word "block" because Coldsnap is legal in this format.

From the sounds of it, you mean that if you have a card, that was printed in a FtV, a precon, etc; and even if it was printed in a legal set, unless its print from that set its illegal?

Or am I just reading it incorrectly? Cause it doesnt make sense to add some banning just because of when your card was printed, not if it was printed in a legal set or not. I mean why does it matter if my Sword of Body and Mind  is from Scars or FtV:Relics?

You can always use older versions of cards that are legal in the format. What Mono means is that printings outside of the core sets and blocks do not qualify a card for the Modern format. So even if Sol Ring was printed in FtV: Relics with the new card frame, it's not legal in Modern.

Flag Mono789 August 20, 2011 10:13 AM PDT
What Quizzles said is correct.  You can play a card if it was printed in a Modern-legal set, but being in a modern card frame alone does not qualify a card for the format.  It has to actually have been printed in 8th edition core sets and onwards or in Mirrodin onwards.
Flag Findlyn August 20, 2011 10:14 AM PDT
Thanks, I had just read it as I woke up, so the wording on it seemed odd. I also might of read it but somehow missed the 'older' part. It could be cut down to just the first sentence, and last two to simplify it. The second sentence, seems unneccasary with the third sence of the paragraph.

Sometimes the best explanations, are the simplest. Just leaving it at the 'current card frame' is 8th edition on, is enough. No way people can misread it as a 'older', which to some I know not in standard means 'old'. It's dumb, I know, but again you are writing this for the masses, leave it short, plain, and simple IMO.

I dont mind looking like the dunce so others dont have too :P
Flag Sidneyious August 20, 2011 7:17 PM PDT
Lets just kill the use of modern card frame as a way to explain it cause it just causes more problems than its worth.

Indestructible (more equipment) or creatures with flying seem to work well with Worldslayer. My boyfriend has a Worldslayer deck that works wonders, for him anyway.

IT COSTS 10 MANA!

Also, it's completely ignoring the point of the thread... and why does a creature need to be big enough? it just needs evasion... gah! You make my brain bleed!

Just saying, ponder, preordain, and rite of flame are also banned, and are not on your list. If someone has already pointed this out, excuse my post.

If I wanted to include Lord of Atlantis into a Modern Merfolk deck, it'd have to be the Timeshifted printing only, correct?

The timeshifted printing makes all copies legal. I wouldn't recommend playing with your set of alpha lord of atlantis , but you could.
