Uh... Quad, I think I can safely chalk your entire post up to "ignorance regarding competitive Magic."

The entire reason onslaught fetches cost so much is because they A) have a much smaller availability than ZEN fetches, and B) they tend to be slightly more useful for a lot of legacy archetypes, since legacy tends to run a lot of lists using allied color schemes. But the driving factor is availability - ZEN fetches still get cracked open on a daily basis.
I'm putting the weight on factor (B), though, because if the only things the Onslaught fetches had for them was that they looked prettier, and the Zendikar fetchlands were a full substitute, there would be no price pressure on the supply of Onslaught fetches. It's been argued that the difference between the Ravnica duals and the original duals is only "slight", but slight differences do win tournaments. As I noted, though, the price graph shows a very recent spike; and people keep saying that Legacy is going downhill because of Modern. Maybe competitive Magic is more active at this time of year.
Ah; like Mercadian Masques, Onslaught may have the original card design, but it is not part of the Reserved List.
Flood Plain and its cycle from Mirage are also not now on the Reserved List, partly because it was an uncommon, not a rare. These fetchlands are considered inferior to the Onslaught ones.
Coming up with weird ideas to make everyone happy since 2008! I have now started a blog as an appropriate place to put my crazy ideas.

Quad... why are you talking about the art? The art has nothing to do with it. Onslaught fetches cost more because they are very rare in comparison. ZEN fetches are only very slightly worse in certain niche cases, but like you said, little differences. Also, shocking yourself every time you go fetch a land is not "slightly" worse in Legacy. If you're essentially starting the game at 11 life, things get very bad for you very quickly against any aggro or burn deck.
Flood Plain is much, much worse because it enters tapped.

Oh, yes. But (under some circumstances) it's only a few times at the very start of the game that having a dual land enter the battlefield tapped is serious enough to warrant paying the two life, so it's perhaps more like 16 life... ah, but your example involves just three lands; two life to untap, one life to fetch.

Yeah, and that's just it. In Legacy you really can't afford to have lands entering tapped without a VERY good reason.

(smacks self on head) Of course. With all those good cards available, Legacy is a very fast format - even if not quite as fast as Vintage, which has a few even better cards available.
What are you talking about? And I mean for this whole thread not just this single post.
And it's said that youth's ,well only tragedy Is being unoriginal niche's solution to everything is always MOAR BLACK!
