I drive, but we only get 8 PTQ's per Pro Tour in the UK. I am usually happy to travel up to two hours to get to them, which usually means I hit 2-5 of them, depending where they fall. This PTQ season(for phily), I only went to two PTQ's. With a car full, it's not usually more than £10, but often much less, plus £10 for the tournament.
However pro level tournaments like Phily are costing me a lot more, unless someone can put me up or share with me etc, it's looking like $400+. Which is a lot of money even with the favourable exchange rate. Although I am playing for money, so 65th or above pays for it with extra money as well.(WOTC paid for flights)
I'm also attending GB nationals which is in the north of the country(I live in the south), so we are travelling up in a car, it looks to be about £10 each, and the hotel cost us £120 for three nights(three people), which is amazing value. GB nats has no money prize though, which sucks, so it's purely for a spot on worlds and Pro Points. I'm then going to Amsterdam GP this year(legacy). I have a freind who is dutch so we are driving over there, which shouldn't take that long once we get the ferry to roterdam, and accomodation will be free/cheap, so again I'm looking at about £50 or so, maybe more due to the entry cost, but once again, I can win money back off of it to cover my loses, and pro points go down past 100th place, so that's good.

I travel 1.5 hours by train to university every day; that's further than going interstate for some of you Nor'easters. I travel the same distance to go to a major tournament. Do you guys not have a public transport system? It costs like 8 bucks return for child/concession.
Same. I travel 2 hours to uni, and 2 hours back to home everyday. Sometimes, people complaining about travel distance, especially US folks, irritate me tons. 1-2 hours is nothing.

I am lucky, as most of the small scale events are close to my house, but if it is outside of an hour-ish I usually just catch a ride.
For the big things like a local GP, Nationals, or TCG Championships, my parents support me. They essentially view it as going to a sports tournament. I am lucky.

we dont have a huge public transportation system as most everyone has a car... most of our public trasportation is simply within the city
The reason US folks complain about travel is the fact that they really cant do anything while they are traveling... whereas if you are riding a train it would be easy to study for the exam on friday or even take a nap if you needed... where as in the US it would be an hour or more lost because we are driving
