A solid article.

You mentioned the reserved list, which of course reminds me of the recent 180-degree change in attitude by wotc towards its abolishment. I hope it will eventually be possible for someone to give a straight answer explaining what led you to the decision that keeping around the reserved list is good for the longterm health of the game -- even if the lawyers won't let you get into too much detail.

Even simply stating, "A lawyer said so" would really be enough.  "We're not discussing it" just makes rampant speculation and insane conspiracy theory way too easy.

I'd rampantly speculate the insane conspiracy theory of this being a mandate from Hasbro, to withhold a conveniently predefined handful of cards from circulation until the game is obviously near death, explicitly to blast those cards out in a quick burst of profit-milking a dying brand in its last days.

From what the article tells me about the reserved list 80% of the rares from a lot of early sets are on there. I think they need to go through that list, find any broken cards, put those on a NEW banned or reserved list or something, then scrap the reserved list.

From what I see in the article, the reserved list looks like a simple promise to always keep the game fresh and new, rather then repeat cards and mechanics. Now that the game is coming close to 20 years old, it's really time to scrap that philosophy.

I think they need to keep the Reserve List just as it is and not touch it. Many of the cards on it shouldn't be there, granted, but they are. To me, I'd be happier knowing Wizards keep their word than seeing some old cards reprinted, especially since that would be outrageous to the people who actually own and care about the "collector's objects" on the List.

I am not going to get into a Reprint Policy flamewar, again
We'd be far better off aguing the merits of Browbeat , and roughly as much would be accomplished by the time the thread gets locked.

What I'm hearing is "we're running out of ideas".  I think there's still ample room for innovation, you just aren't tapping into it.  Go back and do more top-down designs if you need inspiration.

This is not a question of guts. With a few exceptions due to rules issues, we don't change the functionality of existing mechanics. For example, we didn't just change the rules of shroud because we wanted hexproof to exist. We created hexproof.

...and then got rid of shroud. So there's actually very little functional difference in the future. (I get that old cards aren't changed by hexproof existing and actually agree with you about bloodthirst, just think it's a poor example)

 Browbeat 4 life!

This was actually a really good article, Maro. Far more interesting and introspective than I was expecting. You have earned 4 stars next week.

In my opinion Bloodthrist isn't a fun mechanic. It works ok in limited I suppose but it just isn't really good in constructed, but it could be made more interesting, with come into play effects. Sorry if I shouldn't post card ideas like this as I don't often check or post to these forums but consider the following examples -

Consider the following -

R - Bloodthirsty Goblin

-If another creature with bloodthrist comes into play under your control add an equal number of +1/+1 counters to ~this~ that get put on the creature

bloodthirst 1
1/1

BB - Bloodthirsty Gatekeeper

If ~this~ came into play with bloodthrist then target player sacrifices a creature
bloodthirst 1
1/1

I would love to see that templated as "if CARDNAME enters the battlefield thirsty," but that will never happen.
