Highlander is from that movie where "there can be only one", right?

And Elder Dragon because the generals were limited to the old legendary dragons from legends, maybe?

Commander is better as it references the new Command zone and has the same power as the "general" word. A general has an army at its command, right?

That's exactly it. Highlander comes from the format Highlander, where there can be only one. "Elder Dragon" refers to the elder dragon legends, which once upon a time were briefly the only creatures that could helm a deck. Kind of outdated, references to two different things, but I think it has a lot of character.

Having a "commander" instead of a "general" seems fine to me either way, though. It still fits with the old name and it resolves the confusion that I've had in the past with new players who aren't paying attention thinking that "seven general damage" means "seven standard damage" and recording it wrong.

Play EDH? Interested in trying EDH? Want ideas for new and exciting generals? Have certain colors in mind for your next deck, but haven't picked a general yet? Boy have I got the thread for you!

I've been using both.

I think that Commander has usurped "General" for me. It helps if only because "General damage" is potentially more confusing than "Commander damage".

The format itself is still EDH to me.

I like having the zone named "Command Zone" better than just "General Zone", in general.

However, the format as a whole is still EDH to me.  Just like "in play" and "remove from game" are still terms I use instead of "battlefield" and "exile".

However, when explaining to newer players, I use the formal terms.

When playing Commander, before you add a card to your deck, you have to ask yourself:
"Is this card better than Rings ?"
If you play commander and don't have your deck[s] in the Decklist Compendium, maybe you should. Or if you're new or looking into the format, the compendium has some good advice for beginners as well as decklists.

We should all have one of these playable from our sideboards

It's still EDH for me, and for two reasons:

1. I'm biased by familiarity; I've still been playing "EDH" longer than "Commander". As Dr. Worm said of himself, I am also a creature of habit. I was at first strongly opposed to the name change, but by now I'm just indifferent. If everyone understands what I'm talking about anyway, I'll just stick with what I'm used to.

2.  EDH is easier to type!

I think it's funny that people are fighting to keep a part of a name that itself was the result of a name change.

In the movie Highlander, the superpowered characters are just immortals, each with a different name. The main character is called "Highlander" because he is from the high-lands of Scotland. Since the movie came out, most people seem to just refer to the immortals as "highlanders," which is incorrect, but doesn't really matter. People simply connected the idea of an immortal and "there can be only one" with the word "highlander."

I really like the word highlander as part of the title, but the "elder dragon" part isn't really relevant anymore. I think that Commander is fine, since it explains well what the format really is about, rather than just the deck construction rules, and imparts a little of its own flavor as well.

Of course the name Commander is "fine." No one is saying it's not "fine."

Calling it EDH is just way more awesome

After a few months of Elder Dragon Highlander being called Commander, a change I initially understood but didn't care for, I've found myself calling it "Commander" more and more. Commander has a lot less character, but frankly it's just easier to throw around in conversation and easier to explain to new initiates without having to take the time to explain what "Elder Dragon Highlander" means. Elder Dragon Highlander is a fun and evocative name, but there references are two layers deep and it's a little clunky to keep saying verbally. You can't abbreviate Commander, but it's the same number of syllables as EDH anyway...

It will always be EDH to me on some level, but I'm finding myself using the two names interchangably now, with Commander getting used more and more. Anyone else feel the same way or have any other thoughts on the name change now that we've had a little time to get used to it?

I agree wholeheartedly.

In my mind I use EDH, but these days the word Commander is just coming out. I find it's more approachable of a name for getting new people in.

According to everyone on these forums. You should only play the best decks in whatever format you want. You are a bad player and should just quit if you intend on using anything else.

I most of  the time use EDH, but still refer to "Command Zone". And call the creature in the "Commander" if speaking english, but in my native language I call it "General". Or the translated version of it.
