And I agree.
But to someone who isn't familiar with the story, due to lack of interest or being new, it looks more than a little rapey.
I don't think they were wrong to do it, but if they don't want to potentially turn non-vorthoses away, they need to be aware that context won't always be available for these things.

I agree. I like the art for Triumph of Ferocity and, in context, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it since Liliana and Garruk are pretty evenly matched, it has a mirror card which pretty neatly reverses the situation, and storyline-wise she is the victor.
But without context, it does look bad and could give people the very wrong impression. Every card could be someone's first card, so each needs to be looked at out of context. Fair or not, depictions of violence in our culture need a much more cautious hand when the target is a woman than a man.

That's the catch. The game of Magic exists in our culture, but the characters in the game do not. How do you depict happenings in a different culture/world/plane using only images acceptable in ours?

if what was acceptable in the magic world was not acceptable in our world, it would not be popular. Who wants to warm up to a character who thinks its ok tto rape people? Also, people make personal connections to characters, and wether it is as them being there own person, or them being the character, the person will want to relate to them. Different morals will not achieve this.

Yeah, triumph of ferocity is upsetting to people who didn't play a bunch of AVR drafts and see triumph of cruelty  . Of course, it's also upsetting to people who DID play a bunch of AVR drafts because it reminds them of AVR limited, which was complete ****.

The question is, how do you do something like Triumph of Ferocity without it coming off as slightly rapey? Garruk is a wild mage who favors close in, hand to hand combat. Liliana spends her time running around in evening gowns and skirts. Have him use vines? "Its the tentacle hentai!" Stab her with something? "Phallic imagery!" Pin her down? Well, that's what he's already doing... I suppose you could have her kneeling in front of him with her head bowed in surrender as Garruk prepares a killing blow, but that doesn't fit her character very well...
You'd probably get the same problem with Chandra. She isn't as skimpily clothed as Liliana normally is, but she also doesn't have a favored weapon and fights bare handed. Compare it to Elspeth or Nissa, who both wear armor and carry weapons, which means you can show them as defeated by simply seperating them from their weapon and thus indicate they are no longer able to fight.

A straight up axe swing wouldn't cut it from the flavor perspective. The idea is to catch them right at the point where Garruk thinks he is victorious. The only way to show that with him in midswing would be to have Liliana look like she is just going to sit there and take it. The problem is that in order to show him victorious, you also need to show her defeated but still struggling. I don't think there is a "right" answer for this scenario.
