Over the years, Wizards of the Coast has created an astonishing amount of material based around their game Magic: The Gathering. So much material, in fact, that much of it has been lost or forgotten. Plot threads have been abandoned, stories unfinished, heroes unheralded, battles unfought, and thousands of ideas left to collect dust.
It's time to dust some of these things off.
The Expanded Multiverse is an attempt to compile and preserve Magic's flavor. It archives official Wizards of the Coast materials so that they are not lost to the sands of time. Unlike MTGSalvation's storyline wiki, we don't paraphrase: whenever possible, we save the original material and make it available.
We've taken things a step further, though. The other half of the Expanded Multiverse is a fan attempt to explore the realms of Magic not covered by official materials. Unlike typical fan fiction, we create material that can exist within the confines of established canon, and is internally self-consistent, despite being a shared world. The end result is a vast, cohesive set of intertwining narratives that build off of one another.
So, what are you waiting for?
Step into our library, wander around the shelves, dust off some old or forgotten tome... maybe you'll find that you have something to add into its pages.
The main bulk of the project can be found in this group. You can SUBMIT YOUR WORK for review, comments, critiques, and help in This Subforum All works are voted in by an informal council of members whose works have already been accepted. To submit your work for a FORMAL VOTE, post in this thread.
This is an open group, anyone and everyone may stop by and share their work. Additionally, there are sometimes group projects floating about over there that anyone can contribute to, so don't be afraid to stop by and say hello! If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail us at expandedmultiverse@gmail.com
Expanded Multiverse Primer: What It Is and How To Get Involved
A short time ago, this forum began to collect a number of individuals interested in creating fan works based around Magic's storyline--not just fanfiction, but fan planes, fan characters, fan civilizations... the works. In arrogant defiance of Sturgeon's Law these brave individuals actually turned out some interesting and original work.
And then people started borrowing things from one another.
That was the beginning of the Expanded Multiverse: a project where we work together to create a better, larger world than each of us could have produced individually. We decided to create a showcase for fan works that reinforced official Canon, and established an Expanded Canon of our own. It is a community where you can share and trade ideas, planes, characters, and more. Even if you aren't a writer or artist yourself, it's a good place to relax and enjoy some good stories about this infinite multiverse we love, or give others feedback on their work.
Because the multiverse is as vast as our imaginations can make it.
Basic Guidelines of the Expanded Multiverse:
1. The Magic: Expanded Multiverse is built by fans, for fans. If you have something you want to share, there are two main ways to submit it:
Take part in the various open contests periodically floating around this and other forums
Create a thread in the Works In Progress forum for your character, plane, or story, and then submit it in this thread. We will give you feedback and vote on your work. Note that you can also post rough drafts in the Work In Progress forum
2. Respect Other Authors. This means two things:
Everything belongs to someone--most people will have pet characters--ask before committing murder.
This is a group project--Don't cling to your creations with a death grip; let people play in your world.
When in doubt, talk to the other authors, respect people's wishes, and pay attention to the Use Symbols (as described below).
3. Don’t smash a plane every week. Keep referring to Rule 2 and remember that the nine Planeswalkers you just killed all had fans and dedicated creators. Your story doesn't have to turn into a slaughter to be good.
4. The Main Storyline Is, Typically, Off Limits. Cameos might be ok; having Jace fall in love with your character is not. The general rule of thumb is that canon materials are acceptable if and only if they aren't going to be revisited in official sources. When in doubt leave canon materials out. (That said, if you want to write a story for a plot line that will never in a million years get a published novel, well, come to Works In Progress. We'll talk about it.)
5. Everything in the archives is considered canon unless directly contradicted by Wizards material.
6. M:EM is for sharing. The Magic community is full of talented, creative people, and this is their place to shine. With that in mind, get out and promote the project! If there's a story you particularly like, share it on all the omnipresent Social Networking sites, share it on the forums, share it on the street corners and the whisky bars, scream it from the rooftops of London and... well, the point is, we're creating something for people to read and enjoy.
This is a whole multiverse ready for the taking. Get out there and have fun with it.
The archives are everything Project Magic creates, and the archivist is in charge of indexing and maintaining them. The index of the archives is marked for your ease of understanding. When you submit something to the project, you can determine a lot of the marks applied to the characters, planes, and other bits in the story that become part of Project Magic's Canon.
means Open. Marking something Open effectively gives up ownership of it the M:EM. Open things are things that are free for everyone to use.
means Public, the default mark. Marking something Public means you want other people to use it and build on it, even in ways you might not have intended, but you'd like to retain some creative control over where it goes.
means Private. Marking something Private means you consider it entirley yours, and want the last word on its inclusion in other works, or interactions with it: you retain almost total creative control over Private things. Because you can already veto big changes to Public things, though, remember that you don't have to mark a character as Private just to keep them from being killed off by someone else.
means Active. This thing is being worked on, right now, and isn't going to stay in its current form.
means Contested Canon. This thing steps on other things toes or has had its toes stepped on, or has been made problematic by Wizards. It needs to be considered and might be deleted, changed, or kept as is.
means Dead. This thing no longer exists in the present, though it existed in the past. You might be able to resurrect it somehow, but that would be a Major Change, and would need permission from its author if public or private.
means, roughtly, Planeswalker. This character can travel the planes. Occassionally, this might be used for other things that can travel the planes.
Leadership of the Project, The Overlord and other PositionsShow
The M:EM is officially lead by the Overlord, who is responsible for the maintaining the project as a whole and deciding on its short and long term goals. The Overlord also has the power to delegate any of his or her duties to other members of the M:EM by creating new positions for them to fill. If for whatever reason someone is unwilling or incapable of fulfilling the position assigned to them it falls on the Overlord to either perform the duties himself thereby abolishing the position or to find someone new for the position. The position of Overlord is currently held by Barinellos The Great and Terrible.
There are currently three (3) positions created by the Overlord, they are as follows;
1. The Speaker is responsible for the Voting Forum. It is his or her duty to call a start to votes that have been requested in the Vote Request thread, to inform people when a vote has begun, and to declare when the voting has closed. The Speaker will post the results of all completed votes in the Voting results thread, and will move all accepted works into their appropriate section of the archives. The position of Speaker is currently held by Trolljuju Master of the Juju.
2. The Archivist is responsible the compilation and organization of official Magic: The Gathering material to be added to the Apocrypha so that it is not lost forever. He or she is also partially responsible for the general organization and maintenance of the rest of the archives. The position of Archivist is currently held by KeeperofManyNames one of which is Sam.
3. The Works Manager is responsible for the Works in Progress/Up for Discussion/Requests forum. Their duty is to help the members of the M:EM stay focused and complete their projects, and to make sure good ideas don't get abandoned. The position of Works Manager is currently held by Jedi123 Master Prodder.
The Official Magic: Expanded Multiverse Archive
Welcome to the official archive of Magic's Expanded Multiverse. This archive collects information on the planes, characters, and stories of Magic. Works in the archive fall into three categories, color coded for your convenience:
Official Canon--works that are published by Wizards and are part of the official storyline.
Expanded Canon--fan works (planes, characters, stories, poems, and so on) based on the official storyline. These works are part of a wider, consistent canon that supplements the official canon.
Apocryphal Works--Older obscure or forgotten works from official Wizards publications or sources. It is uncertain whether Apocryphal Works fit into Official Canon or not. Many of these works are no longer available elsewhere on the web.
There are a number of symbols used throughout the archives. You can find an explanation of those symbols, the requirements for entry into the Expanded Multiverse project, and more in Appendix B of this archive. You can also find similar information on the open discussion thread about the project.
NOTE: Some of the article titles listed here currently are not links. Over the next few weeks these links will be filled in, but currently this archive is under construction. Don't let that stop you from browsing what is already up, though!
This section contains a list of planes contained in both Prime!Canon and in Expanded!Canon. Each entry includes a list of works on or about the plane. This is where we store all the official comments, forgotten character and plane descriptions, lost storyline tidbits, and... well, stuff you just aren't likely to find anywhere else. Some of it has not seen the light of day for a decade or more. This section is currently (and, fittingly, always) under construction. If you have anything you think deserves or requires inclusion here, please let us know (either via pm to MEM_Archivist or via e-mail at expandedmultiverse@gmail.com).
The Archives contain all the works considered canon in the Expanded Multiverse and the archivist is in charge of indexing and maintaining them. Much of what you see here is taken directly from Wizards of the Coast. This archive is NOT an attempt at copyright infringement and SHOULD NOT BE CONSTRUED AS SUCH. Everything included here provides a link to the original source in the extremely rare case where it is still available in an official form. Such works are included here only for the sake of preservation in the very likely event of the original source being lost somehow. The members of The Magic: Expanded Multiverse strongly support officially published material, and we would prefer it if you looked at what we include here where it officially appears. Whenever possible, we highly urge you to go out and buy the books and comics.
The storyline can only exist if we are willing to compensate the Creative team for their incredibly hard work. Please do your part to keep this part of the game going.
I just updated the Archives to add a bunch of the 'walker characters that are sitting in the backlog, waiting to be entered. I'll be doing a number of these small updates over the next few weeks, possibly every three or four days, so expect something like two updates a week for a month or so.
Expect it, and rejoice at the fact that I'm finally doing something.
Being one who utterly adores fabricating his delirium into conceptual ideas that can be slithered into the fabrication of another to further a grand vision of deep fantasy...I do believe that I'll be reading through everything and trying to muster up a few things of my own! This is an excellent idea.
