The Expanded MultiverseOver the years, Wizards of the Coast has created an astonishing amount of material based around their game Magic: The Gathering. So much material, in fact, that much of it has been lost or forgotten. Plot threads have been abandoned, stories unfinished, heroes unheralded, battles unfought, and thousands of ideas left to collect dust. It's time to dust some of these things off. The Expanded Multiverse is an attempt to compile and preserve Magic's flavor. It archives official Wizards of the Coast materials so that they are not lost to the sands of time. Unlike MTGSalvation's storyline wiki, we don't paraphrase: whenever possible, we save the original material and make it available. We've taken things a step further, though. The other half of the Expanded Multiverse is a fan attempt to explore the realms of Magic not covered by official materials. Unlike typical fan fiction, we create material that can exist within the confines of established canon, and is internally self-consistent, despite being a shared world. The end result is a vast, cohesive set of intertwining narratives that build off of one another. So, what are you waiting for? Step into our library, wander around the shelves, dust off some old or forgotten tome... maybe you'll find that you have something to add into its pages. The main bulk of the project can be found in this group. You can SUBMIT YOUR WORK for review, comments, critiques, and help in This Subforum All works are voted in by an informal council of members whose works have already been accepted. To submit your work for a FORMAL VOTE, post in this thread. This is an open group, anyone and everyone may stop by and share their work. Additionally, there are sometimes group projects floating about over there that anyone can contribute to, so don't be afraid to stop by and say hello! If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail us at expandedmultiverse@gmail.com Expanded Multiverse Primer: What It Is and How To Get InvolvedSpoiler: Show A short time ago, this forum began to collect a number of individuals interested in creating fan works based around Magic's storyline--not just fanfiction, but fan planes, fan characters, fan civilizations... the works. In arrogant defiance of Sturgeon's Law these brave individuals actually turned out some interesting and original work. And then people started borrowing things from one another. That was the beginning of the Expanded Multiverse: a project where we work together to create a better, larger world than each of us could have produced individually. We decided to create a showcase for fan works that reinforced official Canon, and established an Expanded Canon of our own. It is a community where you can share and trade ideas, planes, characters, and more. Even if you aren't a writer or artist yourself, it's a good place to relax and enjoy some good stories about this infinite multiverse we love, or give others feedback on their work. Because the multiverse is as vast as our imaginations can make it. Basic Guidelines of the Expanded Multiverse: 1. The Magic: Expanded Multiverse is built by fans, for fans. If you have something you want to share, there are two main ways to submit it:
2. Respect Other Authors. This means two things:
When in doubt, talk to the other authors, respect people's wishes, and pay attention to the Use Symbols (as described below). 3. Don’t smash a plane every week. Keep referring to Rule 2 and remember that the nine Planeswalkers you just killed all had fans and dedicated creators. Your story doesn't have to turn into a slaughter to be good. 4. The Main Storyline Is, Typically, Off Limits. Cameos might be ok; having Jace fall in love with your character is not. The general rule of thumb is that canon materials are acceptable if and only if they aren't going to be revisited in official sources. When in doubt leave canon materials out. (That said, if you want to write a story for a plot line that will never in a million years get a published novel, well, come to Works In Progress. We'll talk about it.) 5. Everything in the archives is considered canon unless directly contradicted by Wizards material. 6. M:EM is for sharing. The Magic community is full of talented, creative people, and this is their place to shine. With that in mind, get out and promote the project! If there's a story you particularly like, share it on all the omnipresent Social Networking sites, share it on the forums, share it on the street corners and the whisky bars, scream it from the rooftops of London and... well, the point is, we're creating something for people to read and enjoy. This is a whole multiverse ready for the taking. Get out there and have fun with it. The Archives and Use Symbols Show The archives are everything Project Magic creates, and the archivist is in charge of indexing and maintaining them. The index of the archives is marked for your ease of understanding. When you submit something to the project, you can determine a lot of the marks applied to the characters, planes, and other bits in the story that become part of Project Magic's Canon. means Open. Marking something Open effectively gives up ownership of it the M:EM. Open things are things that are free for everyone to use. means Public, the default mark. Marking something Public means you want other people to use it and build on it, even in ways you might not have intended, but you'd like to retain some creative control over where it goes. means Private. Marking something Private means you consider it entirley yours, and want the last word on its inclusion in other works, or interactions with it: you retain almost total creative control over Private things. Because you can already veto big changes to Public things, though, remember that you don't have to mark a character as Private just to keep them from being killed off by someone else. means Active. This thing no longer exists in the present, though it existed in the past. This character can travel the planes. Occassionally, this might be used for other things that can travel the planes.Leadership of the Project, The Overlord and other Positions Show The M:EM is officially lead by the Overlord, who is responsible for the maintaining the project as a whole and deciding on its short and long term goals. The Overlord also has the power to delegate any of his or her duties to other members of the M:EM by creating new positions for them to fill. If for whatever reason someone is unwilling or incapable of fulfilling the position assigned to them it falls on the Overlord to either perform the duties himself thereby abolishing the position or to find someone new for the position. The position of Overlord is currently held by Barinellos The Great and Terrible. There are currently three (3) positions created by the Overlord, they are as follows; 1. The Speaker is responsible for the Voting Forum. It is his or her duty to call a start to votes that have been requested in the Vote Request thread, to inform people when a vote has begun, and to declare when the voting has closed. The Speaker will post the results of all completed votes in the Voting results thread, and will move all accepted works into their appropriate section of the archives. The position of Speaker is currently held by Trolljuju Master of the Juju. 2. The Archivist is responsible the compilation and organization of official Magic: The Gathering material to be added to the Apocrypha so that it is not lost forever. He or she is also partially responsible for the general organization and maintenance of the rest of the archives. The position of Archivist is currently held by KeeperofManyNames one of which is Sam. 3. The Works Manager is responsible for the Works in Progress/Up for Discussion/Requests forum. Their duty is to help the members of the M:EM stay focused and complete their projects, and to make sure good ideas don't get abandoned. The position of Works Manager is currently held by Jedi123 Master Prodder. The Official Magic: Expanded Multiverse ArchiveWelcome to the official archive of Magic's Expanded Multiverse. This archive collects information on the planes, characters, and stories of Magic. Works in the archive fall into three categories, color coded for your convenience:
There are a number of symbols used throughout the archives. You can find an explanation of those symbols, the requirements for entry into the Expanded Multiverse project, and more in Appendix B of this archive. You can also find similar information on the open discussion thread about the project. NOTE: Some of the article titles listed here currently are not links. Over the next few weeks these links will be filled in, but currently this archive is under construction. Don't let that stop you from browsing what is already up, though! The ArchivesI. This archive is NOT an attempt at copyright infringement and SHOULD NOT BE CONSTRUED AS SUCH. Everything included here provides a link to the original source in the extremely rare case where it is still available in an official form. Such works are included here only for the sake of preservation in the very likely event of the original source being lost somehow. The members of The Magic: Expanded Multiverse strongly support officially published material, and we would prefer it if you looked at what we include here where it officially appears. Whenever possible, we highly urge you to go out and buy the books and comics. The storyline can only exist if we are willing to compensate the Creative team for their incredibly hard work. Please do your part to keep this part of the game going.
I just updated the Archives to add a bunch of the 'walker characters that are sitting in the backlog, waiting to be entered. I'll be doing a number of these small updates over the next few weeks, possibly every three or four days, so expect something like two updates a week for a month or so.
Expect it, and rejoice at the fact that I'm finally doing something.
Updated again, with a bunch of new stories.
People can post in this thread now, incidentally...
Being one who utterly adores fabricating his delirium into conceptual ideas that can be slithered into the fabrication of another to further a grand vision of deep fantasy...I do believe that I'll be reading through everything and trying to muster up a few things of my own! This is an excellent idea.
Indeed so!
Lots of good stuff there, looking forward to potentially fabricating some of my own.
Just updated, mostly. Includes changes to recent works, up-to-date 'walker list, complete linkies to all the current planes, and what I believe is a complete council count. Current works will hopefully be updated soon, but this account is under new management, so it might take awhile to sift through everything.
Feel free to post thoughts and comments.
This is a really awesome idea
I have a few of the books, would that help? Where all does magic's "flavor" come from? It's always awesome to run a deck based around the actual plot of the MTG universe :D
It comes from a lot of places, actually. Some of the older information comes mostly from lost articles and websites, and we've so far been just circulating the tapes to keep the information accessible.
Having the books is a good start, though :D We aren't planning, of course, to record any of the actual sold materials, but it's always good to have people out there with access to the books in case we do need to record anything. Glad you like the project!
Story and Plane section updated (current as of this post). Possible updation of Notable Characters coming up.
Will try to write something if the Innistrad block never gives us one, any ideas where i could get more materials (I've already read Savor the Flavor's Innistrad Intro pages)?
That's about the limit of our knowledge at the moment, although you may want to read the webcomics as some of them lead in to the Chain Veil stuff going on with Liliana at the moment.
Keep in mind, though, Rule Numbah Four: we don't typically play with canon materials unless it's for a very good reason, like we know, for a fact, that these are characters that are never ever in a million years getting touched again. It's hard to guarantee that with Innistrad stuff.
Not sure if this is kept up at all, but I have a question about material that seems to be missing. I submitted the beginnings of a piece set in Keter probably about a year ago. I had a thread that had a discussion about the development of some of the ideas and characters with Tevish Svat, and I cannot seem to find it. My main piece was saved to my HDD, but I would love to find that old thread as it would be wonderful information as I continue expanding it. Did you purge the site at one point?
The Planeswalker was called The Storyteller (though we were working on that). If you have any information I would be grateful.
No, we never do purges of anything, and things were up to date here, as far as I knew. 0_o
Let me see if I can locate the thread... if it's anywhere, it would be in the Work In Progress forum, I think... Unless, could you have posted it in just the general Flavor and Storyline board?
Don't worry yourself, I found it. The groups were acting really weird for me today so I had a hard time seeing all the various forums. I appreaciate your time anyway.
Sure thing. I'm glad you found it, and I'm excited to see what you put together.
Hey guys, somebody decided to unpin Ask Brady. Considering it contains all the answers he's ever given, can the archivist please save a link to it before it sinks into Nowhere Land? And/Or convince the mods to re-pin it before it falls off the forum archive and gets deleted? We don't want to lose even the record of what Brady knew and shared.
Oh my god: It's ArcadesSabboth! I was already planning on extracting all the answers from that thread into one document.
Yxoque, when you do that, send me the document and I'll add it to the M:EM Google Drive and the archives.
I'm not dead!
I can't help but think it'd be simpler if the mods would kindly just relocate that thread to our archives.
I'm not sure if that's actually possible... It probably isn't. God damn obvious Beta software. I suppose we could ask, though. It's not a bad idea at all.
Still, I want to have an external backup anyway. One location, even a location in our archives, just isn't enough... Hm, Yxoque, could you also make a list of the questions Brady didn't answer before leaving? I can start shooting them at Doug on Tumblr. (Sorry for giving you a bunch of drudgework, man.) I'm on it. It's taking a bit longer than I would have expected (planning fallacy) since I'm reading everything :-) I'll shoot you an email when I'm done. I'm not doing any formatting or grouping of questions, though. I'm also making a list of questions answered by the community.
Excellent. Szat started a discussion thread in our subforum about what we should do with the compiled questions.
I still want to resave and compile all the flavor-related Ask Wizards questions that Eidtelnvil gathered together at some point on Phyrexia. This might be a good way of testing out formats for saving the questions.
