Basically they're cutting down on everything but GP's and rerouting those efforts toward doing more of those.
That's not actually growth, which is what they phrase it as, but I'm not saying it's a bad idea. I certainly agree that having a GP in every possibly region is more important than those regions having large-scale prerelease events when every decent store is already doing one on their own.

Dangit, I should stop reading stuff about New Phyrexia. Everything I read just ends up depressing me. Those poor, cute little Myr...
I must agree that the idea of having the myr, the most adorable and characteristic race of Mirrodin turned into phyrexian aberrations is not something I wanted to see.
A different question is why, despite all of the Phyrexian "improvements", fancy claws, etc, it is still just 1/1. Seems like the Phyrexians could have saved the the effort.

I am now racking my memory of the time I worked on NPH flavor, trying to remember which cards made these tokens. I can recall only one offhand, sadly. Many things about the set were memorable, but I somehow thought there were more tokens than this, and didn't actually remember anything that made most of these. shrug Oh well, as long as the set's awesome (which it is), that's what matters AEOTD.
PS - the Beast is my favorite mostly because it ties wonderfully into one of the themes of green in this set, flavorwise - keep an eye out for an upcoming installment of the Planeswalker's Guide, you'll probably see what I'm referring to.
My New Phyrexia Writing CreditsMy M12 Writing CreditsAs far as the benefit of the rest of Magic is concerned, gold cards in Legends were executed perfectly. They got all the excitement a designer could hope out of a splashy new mechanic without using up any of the valuable design space. Truly amazing. --Aaron Forsythe's Random Card Comment on Kei Takahashi

I just noticed that the NPH tokens are numbered alphabetically instead of the WUBRG system I'm used to. So the green Beast is 1/4 and red Goblin is 2/4. Is this new or am I just not paying attention again.

Nope, you are reading just fine. It surprises me that they are numbering them in name order instead of color order.

I disagree. Yes, most decent stores have prereleases, but at least around here, none of the stores are large enough to have the kind of draw that a regional prerelease can create, and our PTO, at least, works with those local stores to help promote their events and increase their traffic, which helps everyone.
In addition, prereleases happen four times a year whereas we might get a GP once per year with the expanded schedule. One GP will not replace four regional Prereleases per year in terms of player draw and excitement about large-scale events.
And so people say to me, "How do I know if a word is real?" You know, anyone who's read a children's book knows that love makes things real. If you love a word, use it! That makes it real. Being in the dictionary is an artificial distinction; it doesn't make the word any more real than any other word. If you love a word, it becomes real. --Erin McKean, Redefining the Dictionary

This seems like a critical point to me. For a person with a busy schedule, at least one out of four PR's have a better chance of fitting in than one of one GP's. Also I just kinda "know" when to look for a PR, but the GP is something you have to remember to look up.

I saw some of these lands right when I started working on NPH writing, and was very impressed, and am still very impressed. One thing I want to point out to anyone who might have missed it: with the possible exception of the Plains, I'm not sure there, otherwise in each case, the land on the left shows the phyrexianized surface of Mirrodin (specifically the landmark corresponding to the artifact land for that color), while the land on the right shows the purely-Phyrexian interior with its labyrinth of mycosynth and the platforms being built upon it in accordance with Kraynox's plans (see the Planeswalker's Guide to Black Phyrexia in last week's Savor the Flavor if you don't know who Kraynox is). I just think that's cool. PS, the first of my writing credits has been revealed! Go to the New Phyrexia mechanics article; you'll see a blue card. (An actually blue one, not just one with a blue activation cost.) I gave that card its name. And I got paid to do it. Life is sweet sometimes.

Love the basic lands, especially the blue, black and green ones.

Chained Throatseeker is a cool name. Nice work. (On the other hand, Trespassing Souleater, the one with a blue activation cost that you didn't name, is kinda lame.)
