Hi. My name is Tim. I am into creative writing. I also am using a program to create custom magic sets.
I posted an idea about a premise for a mtg Planeswalker action RPG / MMO. Let me know what you think. There is more to come!

yes working on a comic and had an idea change on genre original idea was going to focus on an airship crew in a steampunk/fantasy world with a man made problem of a over-population of flesh golems that are intelligent.
Sounds interesting. But what's the social message?
… and then, the squirrels came.

If I stay with the first one I have a nice array of options to choose from and actually would be open to suggestions. If I go with dark fairy tales one I do not know yet just thought of the genre idea today.

I tend to like to start with a message before building the major plot points.
I actually had an idea to do a steampunk reimaging of "The Lorax" which would have been fun, but dr. seuss won't be in the public domain for another 50 years or so... so that doesn't really work.
… and then, the squirrels came.

I like coming up with genre then building from there I think messages should feel natural to the story.

While aesops should be consistent within a story, I'm not quite keen on the idea that every story should have a lesson and a message.
I more like the idea of having a simple idea first and then build around it. At least that's how I write stuff (used to write fanfics and now role playing campaigns).
Also, don't worry about genre too much. Acknowledge what other people have or used to do, but do your own thing so that they wouldn't just be the nth copy of someone else's work.

Without a message, there is no substance. And without substance i don't really see the point in watching/reading it.
A story is an artform, and art is about expression.
* A message doesn't need to be big, nor does it need to be drilled into your head, but the audience should be able to walk away from the experience with something.
… and then, the squirrels came.

Well two messages in the steampunk fleshgolem world could easily be equality and the dark side of ambition.
