This sounds like a very interesting challenge. Will these new cycles become part of the set from now on? Can/should the set's owner expand upon these cards (or any new themes they introduce) in future sets?
Also, your pun falsely led me to believe that the contestants would be designing charms. I like charms. :<

Just a small comment about the judges:
I think KEN has the most insight, though it is accompanied by the worst grammar :P
MARO could stand to be a little more insightful. He gets the concluding statement and the benefit of reading everyone else's comments first (I'm not sure how that works exactly), sometimes it feels like he doesn't take advantage of that, especially when he raises problems with cards where there are none (and previous judges have already answered his concerns for him)
edit: as an aside I found it odd for both Ken and MR to criticize the lack of prehistoric flavor in a card called Trilobite Colony. Now granted trilobites aren't crabs but then neither are horseshoe crabs, and fungi aren't plants which is a much bigger can of worms...

Turns out Mark Gottlieb is awesome at judging too. Is there anything he's not awesome at? Scientists are still searching for an answer.

I was very critical of Ken's commentary in Phase 1, and I'm glad to see he's toned back the snark a LOT while still keeping the insights and the wit. Ken, your comments this week were infinitely more enjoyable to read. Thank you The design challenge for next week feels a bit weird. Is there any reason the partners would want to help each other? Why would I help one of my competitors design cards, if only one of us can make it in?

They're being judged on their design, not what their partner comes up with for their world. It's obviously important to be a team player at Wizards and do good work for other people's design visions as well as your own. And this is not a zero-sum game where the quality of someone else's cards comes at the expense of your own.

Unfortunate; the western theme was one of my favorite concepts, which is really weird because I usually hate westerns.
And so people say to me, "How do I know if a word is real?" You know, anyone who's read a children's book knows that love makes things real. If you love a word, use it! That makes it real. Being in the dictionary is an artificial distinction; it doesn't make the word any more real than any other word. If you love a word, it becomes real. --Erin McKean, Redefining the Dictionary

About Epolith: Yay they liked Fossilize that much. I thought it might get the same arguments as Incite (whether turning red/artifact makes enough sense or not). As for Cold-blooded Torpor, design credit goes to the one who came up with the original. I only tweaked it, so here's credit for Harry! The Harder They Fall 1U Instant Tap target creature. If that creature had a counter on it, it doesn't untap during its controller's next untap step. --Harry
The Harder They Fall The Harder They Fall could be without the counter part, it has never been printed before! Tap target creature, it doesn't untap during its controllers next untap step. - TobyornotToby
MG: Cool. I'm kind of amazed we've never printed this, so that's a nice find by Toby or Not Toby, and a nice pickup by you.
Well I guess now that "that" refers to "the fact that it hasn't been printed" rather than "the card itself" =)

That's why they're designing in pairs, I think. If you want help from the one you're designing for, you need to give help to the one designing for you.
Also, the judges know as much about the world as the 'parttime' designers do. If they don't get any help, they can do as they see fit. The judges can follow this, even throuh the original designer had something completely different planned.

Fascinating new design challenge. I'd find it really difficult, because the two designers I like the most, Jon Loucks and Devon Rule, are designing for the two worlds I dislike the most, Dinosaur/Evolution world and Weird Giant Ants world. That said, obviously if you're a Wizards designer, you don't get to say "I don't like Indiana Jones so I'm not going to be on the Zendikar design team", so it's a sensible challenge. There is however the drawback from the audience's point of view that to my mind, Jon Loucks is identified very closely with Penumbria, and Devon with Utopia. In fact, it may be that what I like the most is the concepts of Penumbria and Utopia rather than Jon and Devon. So seeing them submitting designs for other worlds, and other people submitting for their worlds, is going to make knowing who to root for kind of odd. TobyornotToby: Remember that Shock is still the baseline. Lightning Bolt is seeing a bit of time in the sun, but it is not the new baseline. It's making Wizards give themselves permission to print a couple of strictly-better-than- Shock s, but they've stated that Shock is still the baseline. Finally, along with my great commiserations to Daniel, I'll repeat my offer of my online Multiverse database if you want to continue creating Deadsands. My Multiverse database is just like Wizards' Multiverse but for cardsets designed by everyone else.
