I was playing at the time and I'm pretty sure you got it backwards - this article was giving a nod to the already well-known story about the player ripping up his chaos orb.

But... that is exactly what his article is saying, isn't it?

It would be nice if they would get all the old Duellists on PDF. Mine disappeared a couple of moves ago. I don't miss them that much but it would be nice to read some of the old articles again, especially with the benfit of hindsight.
For example, the article about Type 2's creation, which the author didn't think we'd find interesting.

Man, I miss those more innocent times, just on the cusp of tournament players learning to talk like ironic robots and people imagining they could change your life with one article about a card game. the Chess Magic format is exactly what turns me on, albeit now a little too strict with its rules design.
i miss my old issues of Duelist and Scrye but at least I still have a great big stack of Dragon Magazines from ze TSR era, most still greatly worth reading today.

I love how they completely missed that Wall of Shadows can't stop Trample damage. Oh, how I wish I could have played more during those days of not really understanding the rules. "My creatures with banding form into one giant creature, so they now all have flying and trample and first strike and they're a 9/9 so they don't die to your Lord of the Pit, haha!"

Kelly's intro says Duelist "served as the basis for" the urban legend. I have to agree with Kaxon that if we're being technical, the story was around well before Duelist picked it up. So the writeup should probably say "added fuel to".

Be careful what you wish for. From the beta rulebook: Trample: A creature with trample can do damage to the defender even if blocked. Such a creature does a special kind of damage called trample damage. If a blocker has sufficient damage to destroy it then any trample damage done in excess of that amount is applied to the defender instead.
No mention of toughness. It says "sufficient to destroy it." www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.a... And if you still think it's Toughness-related, here's a nice archived question/answer from 1996 saying explicitly that none gets through. Though I don't think it was official, since Bethmo was hanging out on Compuserve back in those days, a Duelist was itself as good evidence as you'd find. oracle.wizards.com/scripts/wa.exe?A2=ind... Not until 1998 was trample/protection/prevention cleaned up. Based on what month it was and who you were talking to, you could easily hear all gets through (none "applies"), none gets through (all is prevented), or just the excess over Toughness.

My operatives recently verified that someone had successfully traded a couple of Revised starter decks into a full set of Legends. The person did it in just a few months, without ever spending a cent of his own money. How did he do it? He contacted every game, hobby, and toy store in his area and traded fairly with everyone he could. When his hometown resources were exhausted, he checked the Yellow Pages at his local library and sent fliers to every game store in the region.
Were those fliers and required stamps free or did he trade for them too?
Still, reminds me of that guy who traded his way from a paper clip to a house or whatever it was.

Every single last one of those "omg i traded junk for gold" stories typically involves the guy explaining what he is doing. Which usually invokes a "what the hell" sort of response with people intentionally making bad trades.
So like, fair trades are not fair trades when you're banking on people's goodwill.

Ugh. I have every Duelist magazine; these reprint feature articles do nothing for me. I know I'm just one person, but I thought I'd let you know that some people really don't care for them.
