The tie-in is kinda cheesy and all, but the actual cards mechanics wise are all pretty sweet.
I agree; the apparently photoshopped art is rather ugly, and the idea of that kind of real-world tie in really turns me off, but the cards' mechanics are pretty nice. The only one I don't really like is the mini-Head Games.
And so people say to me, "How do I know if a word is real?" You know, anyone who's read a children's book knows that love makes things real. If you love a word, use it! That makes it real. Being in the dictionary is an artificial distinction; it doesn't make the word any more real than any other word. If you love a word, it becomes real. --Erin McKean, Redefining the Dictionary

I like Illusory Thoughts, it's a combo killer Entrhall are just badass, I love it Distract are good, but have limited use for me, nice for cantrip though I hope one of these three card got printed in future, it could be awesome. Oh yeah for the Planeswalker card, nice design but -3 for condemn like effect are just too expensive I think

I just realized Toby Kebbell is posing in front of basic lands, Story Circle , and Jace's blue hands. Disappointing.

As posted on MTGSalvation:
"If this is the direction Magic is taking, count me out. As much as i like Disney, product placing this kind of crap to get KIDS to try to play your game is a pure You-Know-Who maneuver.
Im offended by the cards. Im offended by the fact that Wizards wouldnt print most of them, at all. And im even more offended by the fact theyre forcing it down everyones throat.
Oh, and considering that they said ''theyre in the movie only'', i dont take their word for crap. It just reaks off all the same malarcy that happened with the Pokemon TCG when they had the licence for that, and how Wizards lost the licence for it for basically screwing it up.
Dumbing down the game for kids and product placing for kids = offensive to me. The end.
Edit: From Wikipedia:
Reception: Early reviews for The Sorcerer's Apprentice have been largely negative, with review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reporting that only 14% of critics have given the film a positive review. Kirk Honeycutt of the Hollywood Reporter has said that "(The Sorcerer's Apprentice) Is a tired relic of summer-movie cliches, clearly beaten to death by far too many credited writers.""

Shouldn't he be Planeswalker - Drake? I don't think there's really any huge problem with this tie-in. It doesn't affect the game. I'd say WOTC is a much more hard-nosed business than it used to be. Expect more standard promotion of this type.

I mean there were magic the gathering posters in the first spiderman movie, its not that magic is featured. The fact that the guy has his own cards really lame. And yes he is a bad guy in the film.
I like fun, but competitive decks. So I might not play what is optimal but they have normally been tested to have a 2/3 winrate.

the spider man movie, you had to be watching for it. Most likely, most people didnt see it first time through.
Why does this movie get cards made for it? You just took design space away for nothing. Good job! Get magic out there yeah, NOt a person that sees this movie is going to play magic because of it.

Given the choice between a terrible movie using MTG as a disposable act-one setup, or a terrible movie trampling all over MTG's basic premise, I think we actually got the better deal here, guys. It could have been much worse. Just compare The Wizard to Super Mario Bros. - both are terrible films overall, but while one used videogames as props, the other was a complete perversion of the source material. Why does this movie get cards made for it? You just took design space away for nothing.
Nonsense. The only "design space" this consumed was the ten minutes it took to slap photoshop filters on film frames. None of these cards are at all dependent on all of the references to Stone, as anything "Stone" could merely be stripped away and replaced with some other irrelevant 'flavor' - even the planeswalker.

So, Illusory Thoughts should obviously be rare; commentary on the cards apart from that? The Planeswalker Drake Stone looks very strong and probably a bit unfun. Certainly his "win the game" ability is better than that of almost any existing planeswalker (other than maybe Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker ), and his gain loyalty ability, though not great, is at least strictly more effective than that of Liliana Vess . The others are tricky to evaluate, but Enthrall might have Legacy and Vintage applications.
