Recently I have seen some people playing with 61 card decks because it lets them squease one more card in and not mess whith probibility much. Is this a good idea? Do you do this? Discuss.

I don't think it hurts much, but I believe it's a bad habit to get into. Before long you're justifying 62 cards. And then 65. Next thing you know you're running a deck that is grossly over-sized. Not saying that can't be fun sometimes, but it just isn't competitive.

I try not to, simply because the arguments against it are typically too compelling.  I will go one over in draft on occasion, though, either because I want to support this or that, or because I'm concerned about my mana base.

with a 60 card deck, you have a 5.66% chance of drawing a card you have 3 of (with none in your opening hand)
with a 61 card deck, you have a 7.41% chance of drawing a card you have 4 of (with none in your opening hand)

the probability of drawing your 1-of goes from 1.89% to 1.85% (again, if it's not in your opening hand)

a case could probably be made for putting a play-set of any vital card in your deck rather than saying 'i think i only need 3', even if it takes your deck to 70.  but 60 is tradition and it's hard to mess with tradition.

you also save yourself from the 4xArchiveTrap godhand if you play 61 cards and play a fetchland on your opening turn.  (if that counts for anything)

60. Make the painful choices necesary to get the deck to that size.

Unless you are playing casual, and the game's outcome is not particularly important.

It's not, you could just play a one-of Legendary Eldrazi to reshuffle.
Sixty cards should only become 61 or more with a very compelling reason, like if you're playing Battle of Wits
"I can't figure out what card to cut." is not a compelling reason, it's a sign that you need to test more.

The end is always nigh.

I assume these player's are casual because no one with can think would think that going with 61 cards over 60 is a good idea. Pick your worst card and cut one. You've just made your deck slightly more powerful.

Anyone who plays a 61 card deck for no reason (and there are reasons i'll admit*), is being kind of childish. They can't make a tough choice so they don't make it at all.

Sure it won't mess with your numbers much, but it still messes with your numbers.

* There are some decks that win through forcing thier opponent's to draw out. In order to work, the decks have to be slightly larger than the competition's deck (or else  they'd run out as well), and that's the only real deck i can think of that needs more than 60 cards. (That and battle of wits decks)

… and then, the squirrels came.

Interesting... sometimes i stop in the middle of a sentence... rephrase things in my head, and continue typing without realizing i'm no longer making sense.

Anyway, English is only my first language.

Point still stands, people who refuse to cut down to 60 cards are lazy/stuborn/indifferent.
