Ah, I get it now. They went from James Cameron's Avatar into H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos.

A flavor defense of Ice Cage:
The ice cage is sensitive to distortions in the way mana bends around it. So the way the ice cage works is it locks in an image of the mana distortions in place, and then freezes it just as it is. When you change a creatures color, you're changing the way the mana of the world curves around it, essentially changing the image that the ice cage is using.
This runs into an error in the coding of the ice cage, and it shatters. When you equip a sword to a creature, you're thrusting a new magical object onto the target. This magical object, again, affects the way mana curves around an object, and messes with the coding of your ice cage. The image that the ice cage works with vanishes, and so does the ice cage.
You can remedy this by casting a new ice cage, thus altering the "coding" the ice cage has, until of course... someone targets it again and alters the image.

I'll give the writing team credit, this is a fantastic twist on the old tropes.

So, we've seen Kozilek, but the third legendary Eldrazi will be even more powerful? I'm excited to see that one! XD But I'm excited to see all of RoE. It'll be epic. (again) =D
And maybe, on the defense of Ice Cage, he has learned his manners. ''Eh What?''. Manners. People don't like it when they point fingers at someone. So does Ice Cage, only he's a little more afraid of it. So if someone targets the creature within Ice Cage, mr. Cage thinks he is pointed at, and shivers in fear, then falls apart. (*note: This is probably not to be taken seriously.)

What if the spell targeting the Ice Caged creature is counterspelled? Per the game rules, that means none of its effects happened, so why does that still break the cage?

Following the logic of the post, the attempt of casting the spell warps the mana just enough to shatter the cage.

Three powerful planeswalkers—a dragon called Ugin, a stone-shaping lithomancer about whom little is known, and a vampire known as Sorin Markov—came to Zendikar's aid
Fiers, the dwarf planeswalker venerated as a god by the dwarves and barbarians of Otaria! ...sorry, I had to say this.
