Going infinite turns with Beacon of Tomorrows just makes me want to share what happened with my Cube yesterday

We were playing 6-player free-for-all draft with Planechase and one of my friends had been drawing like crazy, and he was close to decking himself. With one card left in library and a Chandra Ablaze in play I felt it best to leave him be.
Then Planechase showed us the top of everyone's library (which showed a Beacon of Tomorrows as his last card).
First he started talking about going Infinite Planechase on our **** to find a way to kill all of us with the Insurrection he held in hand (I was up quite a lot on life as a Sphinx of the Steel Wind with a Sword of Fire and Ice had improved my life total so he couldn't kill us all with one strike).
Then I mentioned to him that he could go Infinite Chandra Ablaze activations. Meaning discarding nothing every turn (since it's not a cost) and then casting Insurrection every 8 turns or so!
We conceded

(my Cube's first Infinite by the way, I'm so proud)

Not that it had anything to do with the article .

I was hoping to see some even juicier combos with Selective Memory (+ possibly Treasure Hunt and maybe Mirror of Fate). I guess I'll have to think of it myself *sigh*

Good article though!

OK, rules question about the last deck:

What happens if you only have Abundance  and sufficient lands in play (so you don't have a win condition, maybe because of a wrath ( Rout for instant speed) effect or something) you have exiled all non-land cards other than Beacon of Tomorrows from your library with Selective Memory and therefore can go for infinite turns with Abundance and the Beacon? (Assuming the opponent can't respond to anything because of being tapped out or not having instant/flash cards in hand)

I mean Abundance + Beacon, will keep you from decking yourself since the Beacon is shuffled into
the library and the opponent won't get another turn, but you can't kill him: Does this result in a draw or what happens?

If you mean activating Chandra Ablaze's +1 ability without discarding a card, that doesn't work.  As the ability resolves, you must discard a card.  It's not optional.

"+1: Discard a card. If a red card is discarded this way, Chandra Ablaze deals 4 damage to target creature or player."

i think it's noel's job to do this for the worst offender of "otherwise useless johnny card" in the set each time, so people are less upset about its existence. he did it for mindlock orb, i remember, and boy was that a waste of cardboard (deck he made wasn't bad though).

normally i don't really care about this column but i did like what he did with the card. some of the decks were pretty neat, like the seismic one.

10/1/2009: If you activate Chandra Ablaze's first ability, you don't discard a card until the ability resolves. You may activate the ability even if your hand is empty.

i assumed he meant "you don't have to discard a card to get the loyalty counter if your hand is empty" because the discarding isn't a cost, but part of the resolution. so you discard insurrection the first time (+1), play beacon, next turn draw and play beacon, activate ability (+1) but discard nothing (empty hand), etc until you have enough loyalty counters to play insurrection from the graveyard, rinse and repeat.

This is definitely a card that is up my alley. Believe it or not, it is one of my 2-3 favorites of the set. But then again, I am the person who makes the decks he is making. I had an old deck that ran Browse to help thin my deck down to one repeated Lightning Bolt which I would cast while taking infinite turns. Yes, it was terrible, but hot damn it was cool when it won. I would have KILLED for this card back then.  If I am still playing this game actively in 2011, I will consider getting a playset.

How to autocard and use decklist format  ---> Show
For autocarding, write [c][/c] with the name of the card inside it.

[c]Island[/c] = Island

For linking a card to Gatherer without writting the name of said card for readers, use the autocard brackets together with and equal sign and right the name of the real card. Then put the message you want inside the tags, like you would do with autocarding. Like this:

[c=Curse of the Cabal]Captain Never-resolves[/c] = Captain Never-resolves

For using the decklist format, follow this:
[deck]
4* Terramorphic Expanse
4* Evolving Wilds
...
[/deck]

It equals:

4 x Terramorphic Expanse
4 x Evolving Wilds
...

I like storm crow because I really like crows in real life, as an animal, and the card isn't terribly stupid, but packs a good deal of nostalgia and also a chunck of the game's history. So it's perhaps one of the cards I have most affection to, but not because "lol storm crow is bad hurr hurr durr".

Oh, it's a brilliant plan.  You see, Bolas was travelling through shadowmoor, causing trouble, when he saw a Wickerbough Elder with its stylin' dead scarecrow hat.  Now, Bolas being Bolas took the awesome hat and he put it on his head, but even with all his titanic powers of magic he couldn't make it fit.  He grabbed some more scarecrows, but then a little kithkin girl asked if he was trying to build a toupee.  "BY ALL THE POWERS IN THE MULTIVERSE!" he roared, "I WILL HAVE A HAT WORTHY OF MY GLORY." and so he went through his Dark Lore of Doom (tm) looking for something he could make into a hat that would look as stylish on him as a scarecrow does on a treefolk.  He thought about the Phyrexians, but they were covered in goopy oil that would make his nonexistant hair greasy.  He Tried out angels for a while but they didn't sit quite right.  Then, he looked under "e" (because in the Elder Draconic alphabet, "e" for Eldrazi is right next to "h" for Hat) in his Dark Lore of Doom and saw depictions of the Eldrazi, and all their forms.
"THIS SHALL BE MY HAT!" he declared, poking a picture of Emrakul, "AND WITH IT I WILL USHER IN A NEW AGE OF DARKNESS -- ER, I MEAN A NEW AGE OF FASHION!"

And so Nicol Bolas masterminded the release of the Eldrazi.

Yeah, really. If my deck was going to cost $1000+, I'd at least make it good.

Correct quitequieter, I meant he didn't need a card to discard since it's not part of the cost and therefore the ability only does as much as possible !

Dothar_Vahlin: I would rule it a draw since you are not progressing the game state, and I believe that is what the [O]fficial sources said situations like that would be ruled!
