I've noticed a number of people going around with avatars of card-images taken straight from something like Gatherer or Magiccards.info, with the part of the text box showing and everything. I'd assume that many, perhaps most, of these images are the way they are because their owners don't have the necessary programs or knowledge to make decent avatar images from just the artwork, and being at least decently proficient with image-editing programs myself, I'd like to help these people out.
If you'd like to have art from a Magic card as your avatar, but aren't able to make it yourself, simply post in this thread with the name of the card you'd like to use (along with set and version information, if applicable), and I will cut and crop a 160x160 image for you of that card's art, using the highest-res image I have as a source. If you'd like the image to be specially cropped, you can request that as well, and if possible I will accomodate you, though I can't promise anything as I may not have an image of that card's art at a high enough resolution to do so.
Examples of my work to date can be found in my gallery.
When done, I will add the image to my gallery with your username as its title and post in this thread saying that it is done. I make no promises about notifying you in other ways, nor about how long completing the requests will take. This is something I'm doing for fun in my spare time because I like helping people, not a job or a responsibility.
I reserve the right to refuse specialty requests that require editing the image beyond resizing and cropping it, as that kind of work takes time and effort that I am not willing to spend for free without specific reason. I may also refuse non-Magic-related requests.
And so people say to me, "How do I know if a word is real?" You know, anyone who's read a children's book knows that love makes things real. If you love a word, use it! That makes it real. Being in the dictionary is an artificial distinction; it doesn't make the word any more real than any other word. If you love a word, it becomes real. --Erin McKean, Redefining the Dictionary

Thanks for the heads up Zammm, I had Bob for a while as my Avatar (full card image) and it didn't look too bad, but when I changed it to Weeeeeee Dragonauts the Gold border against the white backround looks bad. I would appreciate a Weeeeeee Dragonauts avi if you please, It'd be cool, he's probably my favorite card of all time! If you find some artistical way you think looks cool as far as cropping it goes, go for it. Oh did I meantion? Weeeeeeeeeeeee!

To Zammm and others: I've got a complete library of card art from every set at a decient resolusion and pre-cropped. These art the art files used by my inventory program, and complete sets can be downloaded from the Card Tracker thread. Link in my sig, as always. If you aren't photoshop savvy, or just want to download lots of med-res art (250x200 or so) that's a nice shortcut. All the art is taken either direclty from WotC card previews or from MagicCards.info card scans. So Zammm, if you are feeling lazy, I'll save you having to crop everything.

Deciding on a good picture and crop for an avatar is an art form. One cannot simply take any picture and use it as an avatar. Only through time and maturity can a man truly find the wisdom to create a brilliant avatar.

Maturity is overrated.
