The art direction on this set is stellar. It's stunning. I don't say this lightly; I've been vocally critical of the over-produced, mediocre, bland art that has become Magic's standard in recent years. But this -- Zendikar is like nothing else. It takes Magic somewhere it has never gone before. Well done.

It seems like they went over board on the "you think it's a cave or land formation but it's really a monster's mouth" idea. Eventually people would learn to avoid the caves with suspiciously ordered stalagmites!

Hmm. I notice that this image refers to "Endrakar". Early working version of the name Zendikar that managed to slip through?
Edit: And it looks like they fixed it. That confirms that. (As opposed to something like Endrakar being an as-yet undescribed region of Zendikar.)

This is honestly one of my favorite articles. Ever. It reminds me of the Rath cycle book. I would have paid cash money for this article to sit on my coffee table.

As would I. Too bad there won't be a Planeswalkers guide to Zendikar (Though honestly, it's stuff like this that I missed in the Alara guide. Concept art and things like that!)

This is officially my favorite Zendikar article, and it didn't even preview a card. Bravo! The image of the two explorers, one looking up at a twig, and the other who's just figured out that they're in a mouth, is priceless. Not sure if that art actually ended up on a card or not, but it would be tough to see at card size anyway. In the close-up image of the vampire running a finger down his knife - he doesn't seem to have shoulder horns. Was that an early concept which was abandoned? I'm looking forward to seeing more of the Vampire race and back story. I agree that it seems like a tribe whose time has come, and it's nice to see a humanoid Black race that's not Zombies.

did anyone else gag reading the word "skatepunk" in the vampire section? or was that just me? reading that is like hearing someone's dad say "that's sick," and then look really pleased with himself for knowing what's hip with the kids today. except not quite so bad because he's not trying to sell you something with his coolhunting skills.

I liked the descriptions for the new look of vampires. Especially the part of "the body type should be a combination of swimmer and skatepunk." And the short forhead with shallow eyesockets. I like that - it makes them look just inhuman enough (kind of amphibian-ish) without overdoing it. However, I don't see the card artists following through with that part- in much of the artwork, the vampires have facial proportions just like ordinary people.
