Finally a decent article out of Beyer; I'd thought he'd forgotten entirely how to write.  (I know he has skills, he just never seems to bother using them.)  Definitely interesting to find out what planes like Ir and Arkhos are about; I hadn't had any idea they were related to anything that we knew before.

But I'm going to go on the record as guessing that Valla and Kaldheim are a related double-plane (I know, I'm inferring a relationship based just on the names both being Nordic) which will be the setting of the next block after Zendikar (specifically, after they're completely done with Zendikar, as there are supposed to be two "blocks" there, per MaRo's article the other week).  This is the only probable-seeming tease, and I'll be really annoyed if there wasn't a tease of Magic's post-ZEN direction among all these planes.

In other words, I'm annoyed Beyer didn't say anything about how we can have one plane card for all of Otaria and another for just the forest of Krosa on Otaria.  Also, I want to share the subtitle that I wish they'd given the Otaria card:  "The Land of Second Chances".

Here's hoping Planechase is a roaring success and gets revisited.  I want those Esper and Jund planes, to say nothing of the other nine Ravnica guilds, Phyrexian spheres, more of Shadowmoor and Mirrodin (just because I love them), and a few of Rabiah's 1000 other "demi-planes".

As far as the benefit of the rest of Magic is concerned, gold cards in Legends were executed perfectly. They got all the excitement a designer could hope out of a splashy new mechanic without using up any of the valuable design space. Truly amazing.

I'm entertained by "There's an unwritten understanding among planeswalkers that no Slivers should be summoned within Velis Vel, for fear of causing an ecological catastrophe within Lorwyn's underground."

Plus, this plane card represents something more. It's new Ravnica art by Stephan Martiniere.

Awww, heckyeah. I'm one of the many many who love that Martiniere Rav art!  (Having just ordered 30 Martiniere-illustrated Islands and almost as many Forests from an online dealer... dance2.gif)

I agree the Immersturm art is also awesome, as is Vesuva, Serra's Realm, Murasa, Bant, Glimmervoid, and many others.

(Gah, managed to finally wrestle my way through the stupid bugged setup wizard and to post here... but only using FireFox, as neither works with Chrome at all. Stupid non-browser-tested forum software.)

Just wanted to know what the card image blended into the right side of Shah of Naar Isle is... Does anyone know? I thought it was a curious blend and couldn't for the life of me recall what the artwork was for and how it was relevant to Naar Isle or Wildfire.

That was a good read; I would never have realized how many planes were already featured on Future Sight cards. Also, Arthur Koestler is probably my favorite author...

Kudos, Doug!

I think it's Emberwilde Caliph... a blue/red, Juggernaut-y, suicide style creature from Mirage.

i liked the article.

I wouldn't have made the connection between the Future Sight cards and the plane cards without help. Thanks, Doug.

Also, a return trip to Ulgrotha with today's card-designers is in order. Vampires are a fully supported type now and Victorian Gothic horror hasn't been done as a block theme yet.

Rabiah and Wildfire would be interesting to return to as well. How did the Mending affect the efreet/djinn in their home plane?

I want to see that, now!

Agreed that this is one of Beyer's finer works. I know I've given him grief ever since Cavotta left, but articles like this help show that Doug has what it takes, he just doesn't always show it every week.

I hope I can manage to buy all four sets before they get too hard to find, and I don't know how I'm going to get that promo; my local store's website isn't listing the event for this weekend.

great article, i really appreciate the huge amount of effort put into it.

i love the art of all the planes except raven's run. raven's run kind of doesn't look like anything. i'm a big fan of hyper detail but it's just like a lot of squiglies that vaguely seem like they have something to do with trees and some figures in the background (although it's not clear where/how those figures are standing). it's very flat and confusing.

my favorite is  the eon fog, but i also love iquatana, the great forest, and velis vel. also sea of sand. also glimmervoid. basically all of them.

man i sure wanted to post that because i went through hell to do so. first wizards refuses to let me log in, suggesting my password was wrong and/or my account didn't exist (i guarantee the password was correct). then, in the process of trying to log in, reset my password, etc, somehow i create a separate "guest" account and also somehow i end up seeing 3 different looking login pages (maybe a standard login screen with some more information would benefit your users, guys). also the logout DOES NOT WORK unless you clear your cookies/temp files (right now, i'm sure that will change or has changed at some point).
