Ummmm that art on Implode isnt Mr Guff, its Lord Windgrace, as seen enlarged at the bottom of the From the Lab article.
Dang, you're right. Okay, switched it to Diversionary Tactics (which I realize has both Levar and Guff on it, but it turns out I don't have a lot of options for Guff-centric cards)

It's pretty funny to read all those Enormous Baloth choices. But I wonder what "extension" refers to in the email heading.
Also, it saddens me that the phrase "the Legions card Enormous Baloth" is followed by the card's M10 image.

So I'm to assume that the cards of the day will be the four Riders of the Apocolypse?
There isn't a card called War... I figured there might be a split card called War//Peace, but there isn't.
Hmm

And about the flavour word clouds, please, please, please, do more of them! The Fallen Empires one makes for an awesome poster. Coldsnap may look better with a darker background, something bluish, perhaps? Alara is too round and neon-like. Zendikar is pretty cool, but like Coldsnap, it may make for a better poster if the overall tone were darker.
So, I'm criticizing 3 out of 4, but I see a lot of potential!!

The word cloud was way too easy, I want them to do it again but with more obscure sets. Or at least some without the name of the set in the cloud itself.

Easy or not.. I thought the Zendikar one was highly interesting for a tag-cloud. Look how big the words Roil and Hedrons are. Especially Roil. It's almost as big as a general word as Know.

So, why does a white-aligned sky ruin return creatures to play, flavor wise. Why not the black land in the cycle? Why does a ruin have Ressurection? Why are these lands not legendary?

Somebody remind why I live in lame-ass Albany rather than Seattle again? I would have given my left nut to attend that party. And I mean that literally. I would have walked in with my left nut in hand, shown it to one of the organizers, and asked, "do I still have to solve all the puzzles?" And if they said "yes,"' I would have.
So I must congradulate the WotCs who organized the thing. It looked awesome, very creative, clever, with cool prizes and more than enough fun stuff to last through the night.
Well done!

Agreed - huge props to the organizers of the event. It was a ton of fun, and I didn't even get to participate in the puzzle (unless you count carrying the stepladder and making sure the winner didn't get injured "participating"). Also thanks to all the Magic players I got to chat with during the party. It doesn't take much to remind me how awesome my job is, but hearing from all the players out there definitely does the trick.

I think the Kokusho thing is referencing elder dragon highlander.
I'd love to see a Bogardan Hellkitten in an unglued set (are they ever gonna do that again?). I actually laughed out loud at that.

So not just one... but two promo cards for attending a prerelease. Nifty. Also good to see more plane cards, though I think it's a pity the promo plane for the Zendikar prerelease isnt a region of Zendikar plane card.
They could've easily given this one at the planechase launch parties and the Tazeem one for the prerelease. Would've made a little more sense.

I honestly hate, I repeat HATE what they are doing with these planechase cards. I feel that as a player who doesn't go to live tournaments very often, though I do play casual multiplayer, that I'm being penalized by being disallowed to get these plane cards.
I totally understand giving out ALTERNATE ART of cards you can obtain in a set simply by buying boosters... but it's not like I have ANY OTHER WAY of getting these plane cards other than attending the event. There are no Planechase Boosters I can buy. If I hadn't gotten my wife and her friend to attend the Planechase release while I was working, I wouldn't have Tazeem.
PLEASE stop giving away "Planechase Expansion" via Event Attendance Promotions.
I'd be MORE than happy to buy further expansions to Planechase, but STOP making me jump through hoops to get them.

Chillax, dude. With all the positive feedback on Planechase Wizards would be unwise not to follow it up with additional decks and these will need new plane cards, so they'll just put the ones that were given out at release events (and possibily other new ones). You can bet your panties on it.
I'm just saying - don't pay 10$ for Tazeem. It will be a part of a new Planechase deck.

Ah, yes: post-mid-life-crisis Garruk. Balding, needs reading glasses, has a dorky fold-down chest plate--
It's terrible what a few kids and a few years does to a planeswalker. It's worth it, though! Oh, man... Kids are great! And I can still block out a Friday night now and then to reminisce with you Jace. Yeah... We had some good times, didn't we. Trying to kill each other, amassing followers who thought they were controlling us? Ha! Good times. Oh, man: Remember how hot Chandra was? No, no, no. Of course! God, no listen! Look! I love Jaya. Would we have been married all these years if, I mean, listen. Chandra's a planeswalker! I'm sorry, I've had too ma... No, I just... gotta go.

Is that an 8th-Frame, Black-Bordered Northern Paladin I see? Why would Wizards choose a card they haven't printed in eight years to demo the game with?
Also, what's with the Black Planeswalker costume? Are we supposed to believe that this balding guy is Sorin Markov or Liliana Vess?

Does anyone know why the CotD theme is cards that have HT as their initials... I keep trying to think of some connection with those two letters this week but I'm drawing a blank.

Well, yeah, but I meant, is there not a pre-made one for us to use?
I wouldn't expect there to be. Elemental Appeal doesn't create a 14/1 Elemental; it creates a 7/1 Elemental and (if kicked) a continuous effect that gives that Elemental +7/+0 until end of turn.
In particular, if the delayed triggered ability that exiles the Elemental at the beginning of the next end step is countered, then the Elemental remains on the battlefield as a 7/1 (after the cleanup step), not a 14/1.
So, I think it's reasonable that the Elemental be represented by a 7/1 token rather than a 14/1 token in all cases.

The Reanimator deck posted today is not currently legal in most formats. I didn't quite get the idea of putting up an unplayable deck.
Cheers!
daily decks has a long history of posting real deck lists from past events. sometimes they are recent, sometimes they aren't. this is far from the first time they've posted a deck list that isn't standard legal. the point of daily decks isn't for you to bring the decklist to a tournament, it's to show readers a deck.

How does the explanation for the Brooding in Brooding Sauron, the card of the day, make any sense?
How does "brooding" mean "taking care of it's brood"?? So then cooking is taking care of a cook? Boxing is taking care of a box?

What would Slide even do in that deck? Aside from Silver Knight, the creatures it runs are an already hard-to-kill non-tapper, a resuable cycler that's not often used as an actual creature, and a bunch of tokens; nothing that has any significant synergy with Slide. Despite all the white and all the cycling, Slide would be pretty marginal in this deck.

Stonework Puma - Zendikar common. Stonework Puma might look like "another vanilla Gray Ogre", but its ability is hidden in the creture types. In the right deck, a vanilla Ally can cause all sorts of havoc!

I'm not a big fan of un-italisicing text in a sentence of italics, to show emphasis. It's always looked weird to me. \:>
Especially when the rule of thumb is italicised text is irelevant. So technically one could read the card as saying "Equipped creature has nonbasic landwalk. Equip {2} Haven't"
Adi has left a terrible taste in my mouth after being apart of the catastrophe that was Warren Ellis' Iron Man run. I hope he was able to keep up his Magic schedule better then his comic work. He has so much talent, I just don't want to wait months after Zendikar comes out for each new card he said would be done on time.

I never read the Iron Man run. His art is great, but it's the kind of work that takes a long time and not really suitable for monthly comic work. I also notice he only did the one card shown in the Arcana. Maybe some more in Worldwake or something.

Ugh. Considering that foils usually are worth only at most twice their normal counterpart, the much-jacked-up price for the all-foil booster is a major put-off.
Unless they contain all rares, which is impossible since any card can be inside the pack, which I take to mean that The distribution will be exactly the same as nomal boosters: 1 rare/mythic, 3 uncommons, 10 commons, 1 basic land. And that isa major put off.

Of course all foil and all rare packs aren't lies or rumors. I've opened an all foil pack (unfortunately it was prophecy, so it was still terrible) and I've seen all rare packs on video.

"People didn't like the budget boosters!" "Well, lets go to the other extreme!" "Get that man a promotion!"
Also, could we still get a foil rare replacing our foil common?

What!!!!??? How DARE they offer an optional product that people might like!!!
Grow up guys, seriously. The whole game is one big cash grab, so if its really that offensive to you get over it or get out. Your Che Guevara t-shirts must be so tight they're cutting off the oxygen to your brains.

The value of these packs will really depend on whether they're standard 1-3-10-1 or possibly some other distribution. Since this looks to be a way to get rid of excess foils, the rares percentage may well be higher. With an average of 2 rares per pack (1-2-4 like normal foils), the price tag would be acceptable.
We'll see what they are worth when Wizards, for once, does NOT omit the most crucial information...

I'm very interested, depending on the rarity distribution. If its, say, all commons... I'm fine with foil Nacatls, Oblivion Rings, Terminates, but, it really stops there. So, depending on rarity, good thing.

Once again, I must stress how things like this are a good idea.
First of all, it should now be completely obvious to anyone and everyone that Hasbro is pushing WOTC to make more money, and not just more money, but (and forgive me in advance for this) "mo' money, mo' money, mo' money!"
Now there's two ways to go about this: either change the way the game works (bigger/cheaper monsters, stronger/cheaper spells, etc). This would work in the short-term, but would fizzle out fairly quickly. Or, change how you present the game. The duel decks box sets, the FTV boxsets, the planechase box sets, the upcoming Slivers set, the "treasures" in Zendikar packs and now this. Also, the t-shirts, hats, shoes, all branded with the Magic logos and artwork. These allow Brand and Marketing an opportunity to be flashy and loud and guady, while still allow the basic structure of the game to be mainly unchanged.
Now, admittedly there is some in game "flashy/gaudy" stuff with the mythic rares that seem like utility cards, and the Thoughtseizes and Tarmogoyfs that are either undercosted or rarity-pushed to move more packs. And of course there's the enemy fetches that, while still fitting into the themes of Zendikar, do not feel like an organic outgrowth of the set's themes and stand more as an example of a card/cycle that's been sitting in Mark Rosewater's backpocket for a better fit or a rainy day. And I'd call the current economic situation in the US and the world a very rainy day for luxury items like MTG.
These are not the end of the world. When this becomes the only way to get tournament staples however, then we should go about contacting Greyhound.
As for me, I'll probably only pick up one or two of these, depending on the rarity breakdown, etc.

The only foreseeable thing that this foil pack offers is just a reason to buy cards in hopes of catching that one rare in foil that will more than pay for the pack if you sell it. While a decent marketing option, the release of this so close to the release of Zendikar may not have been the smartest ploy, as all card prices on the secondary market tend to be in flux, and people won't know what from the old will retain it's value until everything has settled in. Aside from the few people who actually care about foils, this only serves to create a frenzy of people seeking to make a Three Door Monty profit. I personally despise foils; they warp, and they are way to easy to ruin, but that's just me.

I can't be the only guy who would totally blow $36 on these just to draft 'em once.
I'd imagine so, unless there are other people living in a place that has no summer...
Incidentally, I think we can skip all the discussion on this subject and just copy/paste peoples opinions from the "budget" boosters.

Can we get a rarity breakdown please? I would hate for anyone to grab one of these and find out it's all commons, and while I'd love to trust that it's the same as a normal booster, no comment on it makes me a wee bit skeptical. I have no problem with it being a "money grab" as long as it's honest.

i assume it's the same as a regular booster, as it's 15 cards. this is the kind of product that doesn't bug me at all. if you don't want to pay extra, don't buy it. some people love foils though, and this isn't a bad way to get some foil commons you're missing from your collection. personally, i don't think i care enough about alara block to get foil boosters for 3x cost but if they continue doing it i might be interested in other blocks in the future.

I assumed so too but no harm in being a bit skeptical. Still, Alara? If it was M10 they'd sell like crazy, you know...
I never really liked foils either. they're hard on my eyes and makes it hard to appreciate the card art, and i find it distracting during games. although that's gotten better with their new foil system, i doubt i'll ever be a fan. Anyways, as others have said, cash grabs like this i don't mind. If you like magic that much, then buy them. if you don't, then you don't really lose out in terms of game mechanics

All-foil boosters? I vote "heck no". I'm against the foil idea on principle. It's the same 'premium' principle that put From the Vault: Exiled at $100 a pop on SCG -- BUY LIST. The casual player who thought "those look fun" had no chance.
Foils bend. Foils crumble. Foils break. Foils peel. Heck, (common) foils are used as alternate art fodder because by just picking at a corner the foil surface just peels right off. And when your friend borrows a foil card for a tournament and it comes back all bent (due to riffle shuffle) you really, really love them.
Looks like Shards sold pretty poorly and Wizards went on overdrive since Hasbro started breathing down their necks for better results on the last two quarters. This marks next month as both Liliana vs Garruk and Foil Shards month? How... uninteresting. Still, next month means Zen drafts, so it's all good. Full art lands HECK YAR.

i don't like foils that much either but i'm a bit confused about a lot of this. i've never experienced foils "crumbling" or "peeling." i don't know what riffle shuffle means but if you lend your cards to someone else who destroys them, maybe stop lending to them. also, if they're using sleeves like they're supposed to shuffling shouldn't have much of an effect on the cards.

I like how they deny the collating errors that caused the so-called "god box" phenomenon back in the Tempest block era. I've known several people (myself included) who bought boxes of Exodus at some point wherein each pack contained the usual three uncommons, while the rest of the cards were rares.
Edit: Also, what the hell is up with the new forum software? If I wanted to use Facebook to talk about Magic I'd get on Facebook and talk about Magic.

Fgs; kill the Intro Packs. Remove the M10 cards, extended it to 60 cards, add a proper strategy they are built around. This was the worst Intro Packs yet. How could Intro Packs possibly be better than the lovely old Theme Decks in any way at all? (the one that bothers replying "the foil card"... is somebody I don't like...)

i won't defend the unnecessary use of core cards or the strategy, but in general i much prefer the intro pack set up to the theme deck set up. limited isn't any less a format than constructed and 40 cards isn't any less a legitimate deck size than 60 cards. when you look at the old theme decks vs the new intro packs, the major difference is more commons/uncommons and no booster pack, and 2 singleton rares doesn't make a whole lot of sense in a constructed deck, whereas it makes perfect sense in a limited deck. i was sad about the loss of theme decks at first, too, but now that i've gotten used to the idea i can see that they are logically better. other than nostalgia, what legitimate reasons are there for the theme deck format being better than the intro pack format? your feelings on that actual decklists aren't relevant to critiquing the actual format.

Anywhoos - Does anyone have results as to how well each of the Zendikar Intro Packs worked out for you during 'open dueling' during the pre-release - wanting to do a rough comparison. Looking at the decklists, I'm thinking that Wizards did a good job as usual in keeping the intro packs equal in power.

Theme decks could be played out of the box? And said box was actually useful for carrying your cards around in as opposed to the unwieldy monstrosity intro decks come in?

I agree that the packaging on the intro packs suck, badly.
Really, as an introductory product they aren't too bad. I like the inclusion of the booster pack. The Zendikar intro packs all have at least one decent rare.

what are you talking about? intro packs can be played out of the box too.

yes, the packaging could improve quite a bit. with tournament packs gone and theme decks gone, i'm not sure what wotc thinks we're carrying our cards around in.

First point: 60 card intro packs could be bought by newbs or even someone who had forgotten their cards and immediately sit down at FNM and play. Not so with the current ones.
Second point: I imagine their deal with Ultra-pro to make MTG themed deckboxes may have something to do with this....
By the way, did anybody do the survey that was in the banner ads of the main DailyMTG page a while back? One of the questions was to write what you liked and disliked about the current intro packs and I made sure to point that I liked the booster, but it needs to be a 60 card deck. Maybe they could put in a budget booster instead if they do a 60 card deck?

Or one of their soon-to-be-stockpiled all-foil boosters.

i see your point but i've always looked at theme decks and intro packs as tools for learning, rather than tools for competition (at which i don't think they're very good). i'm not sure what value there is in bringing a premade deck to fnm, or why that is better than being encouraged to build your own out of an intro pack. since everyone is complaining about wotc dumbing down magic i would think encouraging people to build their own deck would get a more positive reaction. if i forgot my deck at fnm i'd personally rather borrow a real deck from someone else than use a theme deck or intro pack.
as a tool for learning i think the intro pack is a lot better, because its contents are much closer to a real limited deck than a theme deck's contents are to a real constructed deck. and it's the same value in terms of number of rares (technically better since the booster has one more rare).

Well yeah, that was the idea behind intro packs, but the problem is if you want to play using srsbsns rules you have to at the very least invest in a second booster, and then you need more basic lands for your splashes and GAH! Granted this is prolly good from a business perspective, but it seems like it'd be a deterrant to a potential custiomer. Plus I think the TD box looked sexier.

buying a single product and going directly to competition seems kind of silly to me. why not buy an intro pack and play casually with someone at fnm between matches? if you're only going to buy a single product i don't think you're going to get much out of competitive magic or magic in general anyway.

I didn't say srsbsns magic, just srsbsns rules. Although yeah, that's not really advisable, but the point is you could, which was nice.

i guess i consider an extra randomized rare, same general value but with less extraneous commons, and more realistic contents for that size deck to be better than the niceness of being able to play and probably lose competitively.
and playing by constructed rules casually seems no more "important" or "correct" than playing by limited rules casually.

I suppose. I still have yet to see an intro pack that I like, whereas I've seen a good deal of theme decks that I played more or less out of the box, and did pretty well.

True, but people tend to get pissed at you pretty quick when you're getting the consistency of a limited deck with a constructed deck.

CopySix: Wow, that was a pretty awful booster pack.
On Intro Packs: I'm still a bit miffed they aren't playable out of the box, but to be fair, the old precons had a lot of one-ofs I'd never put in a Constructed deck, and if the deck is going to have a lot of one-ofs, being 40 cards marginally improves consistency.
The white one looks fine. Kor, Equipment, a couple combat tricks. Time will tell if Conqueror's Pledge goes flying off the shelves like Honor of the Pure did. I wish there was a Journey to Nowhere in there somewhere (where there's one Pacifism, perhaps) but you can't have everything.
The U/G one also has a strong theme and the Sage Owl actually have synergy with all the shuffle effects. Oddly enough, the foily rare, while it's miles beyond any other card in the box (except maybe Harrow) in playability, feels out-of-theme. Understandable since the only rare with landfall is Roil Elemental and a big flying cat thing makes for a much nicer front-of-box picture than a greyish blob.
As for the rest: Wizards, when I buy a product with "Zendikar" on it, I expect Zendikar cards, not "3/4 Zendikar cards and a bunch of reprints I already have way too many copies of."
I am one of those people who wanted wants to build a Twilight deck. Then I saw the decklist, and no Constructed playable short of Baneslayer Angel could possibly induce me to bring more copies of Acolyte of Xathrid into my possession. Seriously, I can understand the Child of Nights, but Mindless Null? Zombie Goliath? If not Lacerator, why not, say, Blood Seeker, or Crypt Ripper (hasty shade guy)? Blood Tribute is a worse Corrupt but at least it's on-theme.
The U/R one's okay. It has a bunch of solid Limited playables. For some reason, the description doesn't mention the U side at all, and I would have liked to see it push the Kicker theme more (Kicker is one of the more strategic mechanics) ex. getting rid of Raging Goblin in favor of Bushwhacker. The deck's name is "Pumped Up."
The Ally deck gets a pass from me for having double Bolt, Fireball, and Overrun, and because there are only so many Allies you can work with in two colors. Still, less GG, more Vines of Vastwood, and maybe some rampants in there as well (the deck's 5+ drops get much better when you have creatures in hand to play afterward).

what do you mean by this?
"Hey guys, I'm gonna run my 40 card deck, Oh, would you look at that, I got sphinx sovereign and 6 land in my opening hand again, what are the odds of that happening THIRTY EXPLETIVING TIMES IN A ROW?" (Note that I'm sure there are more annoying opening hands, I was just using that one becuase I freaking hate that sphinx thanks to my friend's esper deck).

if you're running a 40 card precon with 2 singleton rares and they're running a constructed 60 card deck that's built correctly, the "consistency" of your deck shouldn't be a problem for them. a deck running 4x of each card (and each card is really good) is actually going to be more consistent than any intro pack deck.
and since you'll be playing casually, they can just cut their deck down to 40 if they're really upset about it (personally i wouldn't care because this isn't the pro tour...it's not a big deal). cutting a good 60 card deck to 40 should be pretty easy (even though i don't think you'd have to anyway).

I never said it was a big (or rational) problem, but it makes it, say, .01% worse. And I'm not a fan of things being made worse, even infinetismally so. You know, "Never compromise, even in the face of armageddon" and all that philosophy that seems to work out so well :D .

The old packs contained more cards to flick at people, giving me more enjoyment and resulting in more disgruntled people.
So they are clearly better.
