ok been looking all over for this answer and either im not looking hard enuf (very likely) or it hasnt been asked. (i only got through like page 8 in this tread so if i missed it im sorry) i have never thought about this because normally i would do my creature saving durring the damage step. however, that has changed so i have to find out when i can save my creatures. yea that was confusing im sure, here is an egsample: (i know i misspelled it and dont care yay!) ok i have a palace guard in play, my opponent has 2 raging goblins and 2 soul wardens in play, i have a "into the roil" in my hand. my opponent attacks with all of his creatures. is there any way i can block all the creatures with my palace guard, then return him to my hand and still have the creatures considered blocked? or did they just screw us in that aspect?

Yes, you can still do that. You declare the guard as a blocker as the declare blockers step starts, and then you cast Into the Roil in the declare blockers step. As has always been the case, the blocked creatures remain blocked.
What you can no longer do is return the Palace guard to your hand while also having him kill one of the attacking creatures. It's now one or the other, not both.

Funny how they suddently decided to go back on the old combat rules after 10 years !
before 5th edition where everything changed, the combat damage were always dealt and you couldn'T do anything between the time where damage was dealt and damage killing your creature. the declare blocker step was pretty much the farthest you could get, then after 5th edition they changed it to damage getting on the stack...
now you're telling me, 10 years later they decide to go back to that same formula ? wow, this is awesome.
also thanks wiz for having killed my WARP WORLD deck ! i needed those lands and dragons to win. you know, that land who gives a token to opponent and the red dragon giving them 3 creatures, now i'll have to change my deck all around just to find as good sources. thanks for ruinning a good deck !
also i dont quite understand the mana pool emptying each step now, you mean the pool is emptying withing the phase ? as in, i store 3 white mana during the declare attacker step, and will lose it when we change to the declare blocker step ? if so then that change is truly unnecessary and simply shouldn'T be.
also, one question can we still tap creatures before the attackers step is done ?

Yes.

Your argument is an appeal to tradition--it assumes that keeping something the same is a virtue in and of itself--that change should only happen when it is necessary. However, that is not the case. While there are benefits to keeping something the same, the fact that it is being kept the same is not among them.
Would you care to explain why mana only emptying after each phase is better than it doing so after each step?
also, one question can we still tap creatures before the attackers step is done ?
Yes. The only thing that changed about when you can do things in combat is that you can no longer do anything in between damage being assigned and damage being dealt. Other than that, if you could do it before you can do it now.

Now that it's been a good six months since the M10 changes, and the Returning Player Rules Primer has been updated to include this information, I think this thread could probably be destickied.
If you disagree and would like this thread to remain stickied for the time being, please say so.

So, how would I use a card that has a large in the top half and "sui?l? -- pu?? ?is?q" across the middle?
Winning is not important if:
1. You win by a blowout.
2. You pay billions of dollars in cards to win. If you like wasting money just to win one game, while you could have saved it to lose a few and end up winning more in the future, then it is fine by me.
what?
do you ceremonially light your deck on fire after a win?
Or did no one notice Transmogrifying Licid before. (And by not notice, I mean covered their ears and shouted LA LA LA LA )
Hmmm...
I think the most awkward situation at the moment is simply the Myr Welder / Equipment / Licid / Aura craziness, but I'm pretty sure he's aware of it.
If the most awkward thing going on right now involves Licids, I declare victory.

Mage is awesome, BTW.
Dear Mage24365,
You are totally awesome. Thank you so much. I hope you are able to dine in Paradise without kicking the bucket to actually get there, and that every dollar you ever make magically becomes two more.
I don't think there are any cards like that.
There are things that prevent you from activating activated abilities, things that increase their cost, and things that counter them, but I don't think anything triggers from them specifically.
There are things that trigger from targeting, so that might be relevant, but I can't think of anything that triggers from targeting a player.
I'm almost positive there's nothing that triggers from damage being prevented.
Rings of Brighthearth ; Dormant Gomazoa ; Samite Ministration .
Well played.
