Merfolk! What is "Merfolk!"?"Merfolk!" is a Blue based aggro or aggro-control deck. It uses the merfolk "lord" creatures (creatures that give merfolk +1/+1) to max out your merfolk power. The finishing blow can be dealt many ways, though it ususally comes through clearing all blockers by tapping with Cryptic Command or running through with islandwalk + tideshaper mystic. What is "Angelfish"?Angelfish adds red for burn and Lightning Angel . Angelfish hasn't been proven in any major event but appears to be one of the most promising decks there is. Angelfish vs Merfolk!Merfolk tends to deal better in metagames with Sonic Boom, UG Tempo Control and other non wrathing Control decks. Angelfish on the otherhand, deals better with aggro decks and W and B based control. Card ChoicesCreaturesSpoiler:

Lord of Atlantis : The cheaper lord, run 4. Merrow Reejerey : The more expensive lord, still run 4, he's actually better than Lord of Atlantis. Tideshaper Mystic : The only 1cc creature you will run, possible to run for run through with islandwalk. Slivergill Adept : The cantrip merfolk, run 4. Riptide Pilferer : Jack the Ripper, he's very good but not an auto 4 of. Fallowsage : Way to high of a cc for it's p/t and effect. Surgespanner : Same as Fallowsage. Shapesharer : Can kill legendary critters and copy enemy biggies. Venser, Shaper Savant : Causes extreme tempo advantage. Sower of Temptation : Greater Gargadon and Guile are big meanies, take 'em!
Mirror Entity : Incredibly good, but mana intensive, In reality, you won't need to run it. Veteran of the Depths : Way to high of a cc for it's p/t and effect
Sygg, River Guide : One of the great four merfolk, so auto run 4.

Wipe Away : It's too expensive but tempo advantage is always good Aquitect's Will : Can cantrip for 0 with the Reejerey. Ponder : A new age 1cc draw. Not as good as brainstorm or ancestral recall, though what is? Familiar's Ruse : You lose way to much tempo to play this. Ancestral Vision : A very good 1cc drop, gets worse the later the game goes though. Wings of Velis Vel : Blue's ultimate combat trick. Delay : A very good counter for aggro as three turns means alot more for aggro. Rune Snag : For aggro, not the best choice Cancel : Read above Psionic Blast : Blue Char, and ultimate reach, run 4. Cryptic Command : Another awesome combat trick, a potential 1-3 of.
Crib Swap : It leaves a shapeshifter for you to kill, it's not bad nor good. Mana Tithe : Good only in the first 4 turns. Oblivion Ring : Another good choice, it can be killed though to be negated.

For my build aggro is surprisingly an easy match up since I don't have to fear EOT Char and then Main Phase Char while control is often a game one loss and a easy game 2 and game 3 post board wins. My build goes for a more aggro-control route, though with all the control decks and midrange decks packing big spells like Wrath of God and planewalkers I might need to MB 4 or more counterspells.

IIRC Merfolk T8'd at Minnesota states, so when we finally update our states decklists (Lazy minnesotan to's. >.>) then there should be another reference list. I think it got 4th or third, maybe even second. I didn't stay for the t8 tho.

Wow, I totally misread, I thought I was upping the lands to 22, not 24, either -1 or -2 to fill in the guides and/or isolation

I think it got 4th or third, maybe even second. I didn't stay for the t8 tho. I beat this guy first round of top eight. He was half asleep and I really did feel bad playing against him. His deck was very good and fast. Had he turned one of my lands into an island he would have pulled off a win and possibly went on to game 3. My guess is that he got fifth place because he was in first at the end of round 8.
