No more Turny boxes?

A judge buddy of mine just posted on our LGS forums that WotC will not be making Turny boxes as of Conflux, forward.

I asked him for a link and was wondering if anyone else has heard something.

Personally, I don't like it. Changes Sealed a great deal, the chance to get multiple bomb commons/uncommons is huge now.

Just found this.

After an in depth analysis of the current sealed deck tournament format by our R&D and Organized Play departments we have decided to discontinue production of tournament packs. Intensive play testing clearly showed that the booster only format provides an equal, or even better game play experience.
The Shards of Alara tournament packs were the last ones produced; as of Conflux there will be no tournament packs.
As of the Conflux Pre Release events and Launch Parties, sealed deck format will be played with boosters only, 3 booster packs will replace a tournament pack. All organizers will receive a sleeve of basic land to be distributed to their players.
The details of the product mix for the Conflux events will be announced to the players when the Pre Release Fact sheet is posted on our website early January. The information is currently only available for distributors and organizers.

Okay, that just completely sucks.

Now they get to pretend that having one land per booster is actually a good thing as new players will now have one less way to get the land they need. This is sickening. I don't think sealed will be as good without them either; for starters, you get one less uncommon, and you'll see less cards because there will be more duplicates, making prereleases less fun.

Wizards of the Coast is determined to make sure I never buy their product again.

Of course another thought comes to mind: can they still call their packs "boosters?"

Remind me where basic lands come from again?
My banner is supposed to be at the top of this page. Also, I still have a CT pending.

That sucks for newbs, it took me 2-2(1/2) years to build up a decent stack of basic land for me to use. What will happen now? They need to think things over a bit more before they make any more "decisions".

The thing I'm most worried about is the boxes.

They are giving out "sleeves" of basic lands...not sure how this is going to work, though.

Idk I kind of like this.
Where I play normally has few 2 packs and a box and a few 5 packs for people to pick from.

I most of the time take the 5 packs as I can build a better base line deck then the box and 2 packs.

Hasbro = hurtin' for certain.

Welcome to the new global economy, everyone.

I'm quite sure that WOTC has very little say in this matter. If it were strictly up to those guys, they'd prefer to have all kinds of different products out there.

@Hacimen - That's true! What exactly are they "boosting" now?

Brilliant observation.

If this is true, someone needs a close personal message sent to them.
PS: Special Delivery Show

+ The tourney packs are perfect for new players, because they provide access to a solid land base.

+ They are excellent for people only somewhat interested in a set, because you are going to get a better spread of commons. (no repeats = 33 different commons for sure, in a single pack)

+ The boxes from these are quite popular for storing decks in

+ Now that Fat Packs have been Nerffed halfway to Bath & Body Work's, Tourney Packs were one of the last reasonable ways to get lands.

I'm sure there is something else I'm forgetting, but I'm really beginning to wonder what the point of all this is.

If WotC wants to save money, they should stop doing drop-dead-stupid things like including:

Pro Player cards
I don't know who's idea that was, but I have yet to hear from anyone who LIKES the things. I simply throw them away, or fling them at someone if I'm especially bored. Anyone interested in following the pro scene already knows about the participants, and just about everyone else could care less.

Overly excessive website design
Server space may be cheap now days, but I'd really like to know what kind of strain that intro-flash thing put on their bandwidth. I also wonder what kind of effect it had on the clickthrough rate.
So.  Green needs an iconic creature type, eh?  How about wurms!

Casual Magic player since Onslaught.  80% TIMMY, 20% Johnny.

Want a free, graphics-based, collection database to inventory your cards?
I made one!  Feedback welcome.  Beta 5.0 (Magic 2011) now available!
Program runs offline, includes art, Oracle text, import/export options, and a complete list of every printing of every card.
