though i still did pretty well at FNM i got pretty soundly defeated by a mono red deck--any ideas on how to help with this matchup?

you still take damage from most of their creatures such as marauders and fanatic even if you try to use removal and then i got a lot of burn to the face; it didn't help that i couldn't draw a corrupt to gain some life back

Make sure to keep yourself hydrated with tasty refreshments during those matchups?

I've found that Tendrils of corruption helps out a lot against red. Lifegain goes a long way against burn. I also run Corrupt against them. Other than that, I'm not sure what you can do against them. Its a tough matchup.

vs red...

Game 1 get your loxodon in play and turn each swing into -1 card for them.

Game 2 bring in Bottle Gnomes.

I also believe Tendrils of Corruption might be best as a sideboard card against red. I never run them and they keep getting cut from my list when I build. But the facts are that it is the single most damning card we can play against a red deck. I believe 3x to the sideboard over even our bottle gnomes is the smart thing to do.

Maindeck we need other removal like Sudden Death and Terror to compete against the more dominant decks like faeries.

Of course, exchange your removal suite per your meta...

true loxodon would help, but i don't currently have any yet

i had 3 corrupt and 3 tendrils but i don't think i drew any because the game was over quick; plus they don't always hit because they can sac fanatic to fizzle or burn their own creature to fizzle, both of which have been a factor in the past

I still think it's MD worthy. Are there any match ups where killing a critter, and gaining 3+ life isn't really good? Yes i think that would be awesome, also i think we should give this deck a name. Originally it was called Dutch Chocolate, so maybe some variation on that? Or just going old school would be good too.

@Fogdog: Cards i have found to be good vs RDWs. Garza's assassin , Dusk urchins , Phyrexian ironfoot . Also Damnation of course, but mostly all the ground clog critters. Assassin i think is the best of all these, since he can block for a kill and sac for another, or just block and sac before dmg step. Either way he soaks up alot of dmg. Unless they burn him, in which case you just sac him and get a 2 for 1. his recover isn't very good though.

I've noticed in my own matchups against red that the Dusk Urchins are usually burned right away, unfortunately. I really stand by tendrils against red. Other options could be extirpating their burn, but that seems like a bad use of it, considering the amount of different burn spells they run. I usually side in Razormane Masticore against red. If I can hold off long enough for it to become effective, it really becomes a beater. Its always a 2 for 1 for them to get rid of it outside of the artifact hate cards, so I'm usually ahead on cards, especially if I've had a turn or two to burn with it along side with the card drawers I run.

Niche, a new thread is a great idea. It'll really clear things up.

Yeah i agree tendrils is huge for this match up, though it's nerfed pretty hard by Gargadon. I haven't used masticore to much, but i am sure he's good for this MU.

Have you guys ever explored using Vampiric Link in MBC as a way to both a.) nullify big threats on opponent's side and b.) boost your own life in a warhammer kind of way? (useful against red)
