How's that going to work?
You'll need to start from square one -- you can't even use tapping or the colour pie. It will need to be a new game. I mean, we could get some hardcore hackers involved and go compltely underground, moving the site each time they shut it down. But that's a lot of extra hassle.
We could learn more about the legal angle. For example, as I understand it, game mechanics can't be copyrighted or trademarked - Tetris clones could be made as long as they didn't use the name Tetris. The firs tone I played was called Tetrix. So in theory, we could "tip" to attack. But again, that could lead to a lot of hassles that might be best avoided. How do other card games do it? heck, when I attack with a vigilance creature, I push the card forward a bit.
We're dropping back a lot more than 10 yards here... but we're not punting, we're starting a whole new offense. If you can go with the obtuse metaphor.
But there are a lot of possibilities for developing a new game, a million different ways to go that can turn out just as fun. It will take a big investment of time, but developing a game can be fun, sometimes as fun as playing. To me, the main reason it is worth it is to be free from the profit motive and other motives of a huge corporation. The game of Magic was never "ours", not even a little bit, although it was in their interests to encourage us to believe it was.
Atm we're discussing things like what genre to use, and whether or not to use a resource system, and what that might look like. But I think the next move is to get forums set up so that the discussion can take a much needed more organized form.

It needs a land-type deal. All other concerns are secondary.
You can start with MaRo's design philosophy articles, I guess.
Umm, so I don't really frequent these forums any more, but I do blog for my website Greatplay.net.

That's a really annoying piece of writing. I don't know what he thinks his point is, but I'm sure if I were to find out I'd just be more annoyed. The point is that even ten years ago people thought the game was going to die when wizards released the slower, combat oriented masques and invasion block in the wake of the super fast urza block. This game never dies in spite of whatever wizrds may do that is perceived as nerfing the game.

You guys are being retarded.
Trust me when I say that control will still be a VERY viable option come the rotation.
Also, Wrath is almost unseen these days. Stop freaking out about nothing.

We've got forums up now, and the discussion has begun on creating a CCG that is developed by players, for players. Want some say in rules changes? Join us at: http://playerscardgame.proboards.com

I have successfully played 25 games with the new M10 rules.
How many times has the new rules came up? 2.
Both times were when my opponent used three lands to pay for a 2cmc creature off a filter, and didn't take -1 from manaburn.
So far, I think it will be ok.

re: mana burn...
I've been trying out combos with Bloom Tender lately (no good decks have come from it). Since some of them involve being able to generate arbitrarily large amounts of mana, the contrast is clear - before rules change, I have to do some mental arithmatic, and be sure to generate enough mana, but not so much that I take more burn than necessary. After rules change, I can just say, whatever, I'll just generate 10 billion mana, give or take, then I'll spend it as follows... It doesn't come up much, but in those cases it did seem extremely lame that it just doesn't matter any more.

The new combat rules didn't come up in any way in 25 games? Correct.
I assume playing against burn not running Mogg Fanatic could potentially count as the new combat rules, but they did not directly come up in any of my paper or MWS matches since I adopted M10 rules with the full spoiler.

Surprising. I haven't played with M10 rules yet, or really paid attention... but I played a few games last night, and definitely put damage onto the stack at least twice. Also, playing at the local shop it has come up, and is always commented on ("do it while you can" and that sort of thing).
