Now with so much targeted removal that does not put creatures in graveyards, (a la Oblivion Ring  , Unmake  , Path to Exile  amongst others) I think the once-powerful demigod has been rendered obsolete.

I don't think he's obsolete he's just neutered a bit. Many decks still play him. At his worse he's a 5/4 flier with haste for a very reasonable cost.
